It's about women living longer on average than men. Slight difference, but there is a difference. Men tend to do stupid things like get involved in wars, eat badly, don't go to the doctor for serious problems, and perform any number of actions that start with, "here, hold my beer". Women tend to stand by and shake their head disapprovingly.

For all of his intelligence now, my brother, and his merry band of cohorts, were all kinds of stupid when they were teenagers and young men. I'm continuously shocked that they all made it into adulthood safely and relatively unscathed.

- BenRS, on 10/19/2007, -1/+10Right........ except that gender-difference has been in our evolutionary history since whenever the first heterosexual reproduction happened (ie a long, long, long, long time ago) and even then the females had to evolve to accomodate heterosexual reproduction too.
Males have an inherently better sense of direction, are stronger, and are inherently better at logically analyzing specific phenomena and placing them in context (whereas females are inherently better at multi-tasking) than females. So what? Each gender has it's benefits.
Mabye I'm wrong, but it just seems to me that to declare that females are the "ideal form" when gender has been around since long before our brains and bodies developed and females also had to evolve from somewhere is completely absurd (did God descend from heaven and bless female mammals with ideal...ness...?). Furthermore, who ever made the correlation between life span and "ideal form?" A long life span is certainly ideal to our subjective consciousses, but ideal form in the context of natural selection means the form most likely to maintain and expand it's population. Even if men do have shorter life spans for not being "ideal," the male body is still better suited for the hardships of prehistoric life than the female (much better), and I can guarantee to you that a population of males (humans) that could reproduce without females would thrive much more than a population of females that could produce without males. - 3tcp, on 10/18/2007, -0/+9Semen contains anti-aging properties.

2) Bodies take more punishment. Males play much rougher than females do (football/rugby anyone?) and wrestle and other such things for fun. Men also binge drink more, in general tend to eat less healthy food, and such.
3) Basic gender identity. Common sense, think about what society expects a male to be. We drive faster, obey traffic laws less in general, take more risks, and in general weigh the consequences of our actions less because fear is considered unmanly. A sociology textbook of mine also states that, ironically enough, even though males are supposed to be the more individualistic gender and the one less respecting of authority and social norms, there is actually far more pressure on males to conform to their gender expectations.
4) Same book mentions that the prevailing accepted venting method for negative emotions for males is anger, which builds blood pressure, whereas the one for females is sadness, which does not and I thought I heard somewhere that sadness actually lowers it. Tears are healthy, popping veins aren't.
I'd say the causes are entirely or mostly sociological instead of biological. - yawnstretch, on 10/18/2007, -2/+10Men work harder. Why not? Not that I'm advocating either of the above, but the implication of this line being included in the article is that modern social constructs supersede scientific conclusions. It is presented without supporting evidence as if it were an obvious truism. -
