- benb24, on 11/17/2007, -8/+78i love how fat people blame everyone and everything but themselves. put down the ***** cheeseburger and take some personal responsibility for your actions.
- Rob223, on 11/17/2007, -2/+41Because if I see an ad for something, I HAVE to eat it.
- thugok, on 11/17/2007, -2/+35If you need the government to spend money to tell you how to eat healthy you fail at life. Kill yourself now.
Ads don't make you fat. - spyd3rweb, on 11/17/2007, -2/+25I for one am glad the government doesn't waste $25 billion a year countering these ads.
- DarkGerbil, on 11/17/2007, -5/+27Oh...my....god. How many excuses to fat people need for being fat. It just doesn't ***** end! I don't care about your "metabolism" I dont care about your "disease." Put down, the *****, fork.
- BinaryFragger, on 11/17/2007, -0/+11"marketers objective is to get the customer to consume"
It's almost like it's the marketer's job to sell the product! - inactive, on 11/17/2007, -2/+12OMg the *****.
First of all, it's not the government's responsibility to advertise ***** you're supposed to know. Everybody knows what good food is, everybody knows what fat is. It's not exactly complicated. They already spend way too much money on this, IMO.
Second, you're fat because you eat like a fat pig and you don't move. I ***** hate people who blame everybody but themselves for things only they can be responsible for. "The media" just tells you what restaurants sell and they advertise that. Your complete lack of self-control and discipline is what makes you go there and eat pre-made, factory produced, bleached crap that was fried in butter, oil and fat.
Fast food isn't even food anymore. You'd need to drive to a chemical manufacturing plant to buy the stuff required to make that *****. It's made with stuff you can't even buy at a grocery store ffs.
AND STOP TAKING YOUR KIDS TO MCDONALD'S. LAZY BASTARDS. - ivankraszl, on 11/17/2007, -4/+13Also, fast food ads are fun, while ads promoting eating right are usually lame. Here is a collection of fun ads promoting fast food:

If this is true why do we have many people who are healthy and in shape, could it be proper choices? Quit blaming companies for the poor choices people make. Perhaps the government should control our food, take over all the companies and only allow us to eat what is "good". There are people in this nation that want to remove all responsibility from individuals and place it on society as a whole, food, health care, education, wealth. These people are idiots who probably should be told what to do so they don't harm the rest of us individuals. I'm 35 years old and in the best shape I've been in since high school, and I live in this "corporate" environment. This issue has far more to do with weak minds than it does corporate advertising.
- inactive, on 11/17/2007, -2/+9Sorry dude but those are simple carbs.
- oneoverzero, on 11/17/2007, -2/+9Well, that's your problem. Ads tend not to digest right.
- Herostratos, on 11/17/2007, -1/+8Approx 3-5 % of the people who are fat is so because of a medical condition. The other 95-97 % can blame themselves.
- inactive, on 11/17/2007, -2/+9Who gives money to these kids?
- govsucks, on 11/17/2007, -1/+8Contrary to the beliefs of the loony left, it is in the best interest of corporations to keep us alive so we can continue consuming. Your comment is NONSENSE, why would they want us to die? In addition to that, unlike government they can't point a gun at you and force you to consume, making your comment even more pathetically stupid. I eat very little fast food and McDonalds can't do a damn thing about it, on the other hand, I purchase far more social security and public schools than I can stomach, but I don't really have a choice about that do I? If anything is gonna dig our graves, it will be socialism that makes people go hungry.
- Merick, on 11/17/2007, -5/+12Yeah, and how about those anorexics? Grow up already and eat, take some responsibility.
/sarcasm. - einstevo, on 11/17/2007, -2/+8so you don't think that any kind of food is that bad but you avoid fast food like its the plague. you also neglect protein and healthy fats, opting to eat only carbs based on no nutritional fact.
- poidh, on 11/17/2007, -1/+7We don't get fat because of ads. We get fat because we don't exercise anywhere near enough.
- charlie55, on 11/17/2007, -2/+7sarcasm not necessary.
- Merick, on 11/17/2007, -0/+5I'll take capitalism over communism.
- biogears, on 11/17/2007, -0/+5The same people that claim the media affects people's behavior when it comes to ads like this, usually deny that other forms of media portraying violence, drug use, promiscuity, etc have any effect.
What we let in, affects what we think. - mightyzug, on 11/17/2007, -0/+4i wish i could dig you up a thousand times for that comment.
my sister in law is just the type of stupid bitch your talkin about... the kids whine and bitch for mcdonalds so that's what they get. her excuse "what am i supposed to do?? they won't eat anything else"
let the little ***** starve, all of a sudden a carrot will look real ***** appetizing, i promise. this is the kind of stupidity that is outraged over fast food advertising because they are too ***** retarded to take responsibility for thier own actions.
same thing when the kids act up and SHOULD be getting in trouble... "oh what am i supposed to do they just won't listen to me *drink another one* *watch daytime tv*" ***** pathetic. - insllvn, on 11/17/2007, -1/+5"The food industry spends $25 billion a year marketing their products, the government spends just $1 million advertising its new food guidelines of five servings of fruits and vegetables a day." No wonder, we're getting fatter.
It is pretty sad when we have just accepted that marketing rules our lives, and are left to complain that not enough money is spent on the choices we wish we had the independence to make for ourselves. - riverstyx, on 11/17/2007, -0/+4Ew fast food sucks, And I know im going to end up in some stupid rant, but companies spend so much telling people it's great to have because if they stop, someone else (Possibly a dietician) will tell them otherwise and they'll wise up.
They're all the same, all the mcdonalds and bacon cheeseburgers and soda companies do everything they can so you buy their stuff.
It's big business, even the weight loss scams are in on the market. Everyone makes money and the nation gets more unhealthy by the day.
Money means more then a stable, healthy social system to a lot of people. You think those CEO's of burger king are actually eating the food they sell? Chances are, they want to live a really long life, for whatever reason they can sleep on at night.
In the end though, it comes down to personal responsibility and choice. Advertising food is like advertising in vegas: It all screams "BUY ME, STUPID!!" and people do, they do, they buy it all and they eat it and they love it and they gain weight and they die at a young age of heart problems and mental instability. In the end its someone's stock that goes up and the shareholders are happy.
Everything is for sale, you name it, its out there. At one time Water was seen as something normal. Not anymore, soda companies jumped on board the "Healthy" wagon and spend more money on advertising water then anything else these days. They're taking tap water, filtering it 87 times then bottling it, throwing it on trucks and selling it for more then premium gasoline.
And on and on, everything that can be advertised will eventually be marketed. Remember the "Pet Rock"? It was just that, a Rock. But it became a fad and people bought it! And..Razor scooters, and Guitar Hero, and Hula Hoops, and Britney Spears, and cell phones you stick in your ear (I think they're called bluetooth), and a whole lot of other ***** we really don't need but gotta own.
"They package brine shrimp and sell it to kids?! That's not right man!!!"
You get the idea. I'm putting you all in charge of fixing this problem, I expect to see a resolution by the end of the weekend. - TheFinaleofSeem, on 11/17/2007, -0/+4And ultimately, it's the consumer's choice to consume. Companies can advertise all day long, but it wont do anything unless people decide to buy.
- socialpyramid, on 11/17/2007, -2/+6http://www.geocities.com/perry_peterson_1999/fat-b ...
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 11/17/2007, -0/+4Yeah, Fatty McFunyun, it's all the advertisers' fault! Just keep telling yourself that as you shovel in the peanut M&Ms and Twinkies. Keep blaming the big companies for your problems. That's a lot easier than taking responsibility for yourself.
- mightyzug, on 11/17/2007, -1/+5"why ads make you fat" -- is why digg makes you stupid.
- Bamborzled, on 11/17/2007, -0/+4"My"Pyramid? The Food Pyramid's gone Web 2.0 as well?
- fafaforza, on 11/17/2007, -0/+4Ditto. How many times on my way to the gym on a Saturday morning do I see a woman in a car in a drive-through window, with her two kids in the back seat. These kids might very well develop all kinds of health problems because this bitch is too lazy to make oatmeal and pour some orange juice. And the fact that she's lazy no doubt means that she'll talk all kinds of smack about the "rich", blaming everyone but herself for all that's wrong with her life.
- Sandurz, on 11/17/2007, -0/+3The fork, is glued, to my, hand
- mightyzug, on 11/17/2007, -0/+3"***** chuck norris..."
- cecinestpasvrai, on 11/17/2007, -3/+6Look, if advertising didn't effect the way people think they wouldn't use it. It's that simple, and it's naive to think otherwise. Poor, lower and middle class families east fast food because it's "fast", their kids bitch about what they've seen on TV, and they're busy working 3 jobs so they don't quite have the time to make a full meal. This is knowingly exploitative, and anyone who thinks we need to blame the individuals has been thoroughly worked over by America's cult of the individual.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissus_%28mytholog ... - mojaam, on 11/17/2007, -0/+3You should have also included the lame ads promoting eating right to be fair but thanks for gathering all those.
- braves322, on 11/17/2007, -1/+4or maybe its a lack of self discipline
- mightyzug, on 11/17/2007, -0/+3evolution has hardwired us with the compulsion to eat... that is true, but as an excuse for overeaters it is just some lame *****. evolution has hard wired us to ***** too, try using that as the excuse next time you're caught cheating on your wife :P just because something is a biological behavoir doesn't mean we have to do it.
- samdu, on 11/17/2007, -0/+3Ads don't force you to buy anything.
- ZigVicious, on 11/17/2007, -1/+3I, can use, commas annoyingly, too.
- EzarKun, on 11/17/2007, -0/+2do i see a camel toe, or am i just desperate for sex?
- fafaforza, on 11/17/2007, -1/+3I don't find fast food fast nor cheap. I can get a deli-made tuna sandwich in the same amount of time it takes them to heat up some 2 week old re-refrigirated beef. Add to the sandwich a tea and a bananna and you're way below the cost of a comparable hamburger meal.
Plus, lack of time is a cop out. If you get desparate for time to the point of not being able to make a meal, you learn to make time. You cook for the whole week, you freeze some of the stuff for the microwave, etc.
There are many reasons people have less time today: keeping up with Joe Consumer next door, living farther and farther away from your place of work and commuting longer, or finding house work stuff like cooking demeaning or something and choosing to build your career instead. Still, they can only be addressed by the individual. - Beveridge89, on 11/17/2007, -0/+2Either that, or he was being sarcastic
- oneoverzero, on 11/17/2007, -1/+3Well, the food pyramid was just redone...
http://www.mypyramid.gov - kreatre2007, on 11/17/2007, -1/+3NO... The reason why people are getting fatter is because they can't exercise self control when making the choice of what foods to eat and they don't get enough exercise. Food vendors and processors already post the nutrional information on every label and, you're free to ask for this information when you go to a restaurant. It's all about responsibility for your own actions. The government and food vendors are not at fault one bit for someone becoming a lazy lard ass who can't eat right and get to a gym once in a while.
- node3, on 11/17/2007, -2/+4The choice of what, how much, and how often, to eat is not controlled entirely by rational thought. If it were, most people would die of starvation. Evolution has hardwired us with a compulsion to eat, with a bias towards over-eating and against under-eating. Fast food marketing affects us on that primal, sub-conscious, non-rational level, and is *definitely* *directly* responsible for some percentage of the excess weight in our country.
That's not to say the overeaters themselves are blameless, but for many of them, a world sans fast food ads, even with everything else remaining the same, would be a world where they are thinner than they are now.
What, do you think they'd make the ads if they didn't work? - Metalmoon, on 11/17/2007, -1/+3please share these marketing techniques that produce "hardwired responses". i would love to see the studies that show individuals can be turned into consumption zombies. people eat the ***** they eat because it tastes good, not because of some evil marketer sitting in a black tower cackling away. People are fat because they don't exercise and they make dumb food choices .
- Metalmoon, on 11/17/2007, -1/+3care to tell us what corporations own pharmaceutical companies and sugar/grain companies? And what the ***** is wrong with a piece of bread or a potato anyway? Starches are not evil dude, chill out.
- RobotBuddha, on 11/17/2007, -1/+3It does sound like an excuse, but you're also quite right. We all like to think our actions are conscious, and guided by actual rational choice. The science doesn't back it up though. The sad reality is that the number of actual rational choices we make in a day is just the tip of a immense iceberg of unconscious commands.
Not fat, but also quite sure that I'm being controlled in a million and one other ways in my day to day life that I'm oblivious to. - Metalmoon, on 11/17/2007, -0/+22 mcd's double cheeseburgers and a tap water is only two bucks.... thats half the cost of a tuna sandwich from a deli
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -1/+3Addicting? Really? Why do people have to call everything enjoyable addictive? First pot, then video games, now sugar.
- Typhoon2009, on 11/17/2007, -1/+3I can't help it! I eat Chipotle in fear that the burrito from the billboards will squash me if I don't.
- mojaam, on 11/17/2007, -1/+3Ms. South Carolina, is that you?
