- vtbarrera, on 02/03/2009, -1/+34So these cocktails are making me fat? Guess I'll just have to start drinking alcohol straight then.
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -2/+27A Guiness only has 210 calories each? I'll take 6
- AllINeed, on 07/17/2008, -3/+22Gotta remember that for tonight while im out drinking... thanks ;) there goes all the tasty ones down the drain
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 07/18/2008, -0/+17No wonder why the Dude seems a bit round in the middle.
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -0/+14Hot Buttered Rum - yum yum
- megaton, on 07/18/2008, -0/+14Guess what? The caloric value in the actual alcohol doesn't matter. Why? Because the alcohol raises your metabolism enough to burn off the calories you take in. And the sugar you add to your cocktails? It doesn't matter nearly as much as you may think.
What gives you the gut is the way in which alcohol is metabolized. When alcohol is broken down, it becomes acetic acid. Acetic acid has the (unfortunate) side effect of blocking fat burning. Because alcohol cannot be stored, it is burned and used as your body's primary source of fuel. Essentially, you're replacing one source of fuel (fat) with another, temporary one (alcohol). And, over time, your body is left with an excess of fat that never got used.
Top it off with alcohol's ability to make you hungry for fatty foods (you can thank your increased metabolism for that!), and you can end up taking in fat that will be stored instead of burned.
So, the lesson is: limit the amount of fat you consume while drinking. Stick to fruity drinks and stay away from cream-based drinks, even though they may have a lot more calories. Pass the margarita, please! :) - moodley, on 07/18/2008, -1/+10No wonder I'm a chub!
- Detritus, on 07/18/2008, -1/+9I'm skeptical of the numbers for Margaritas. There are so many different ways to make a Margarita. If you're getting one of those sugary mixes then I could see it potentially getting to the 800 range. Those made with limeaid (not the Bacardi crap) and other natural ingredients would probably be more healthy and nutritious than anything on the list.
- Fatherspirit, on 07/18/2008, -0/+8Give Me A Pina Colada Daddy O!! :-)
- theadvinci, on 07/18/2008, -2/+10The best alcoholic drink is beer, calories or no calories.
- bixby1, on 07/18/2008, -0/+6Yeah, I was a little surprised as well. I too will have 6.
- MacBookForMe, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5I don't count my pleasure calories, yet
- BlackJackJester, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5Of course I burn off all those booze calories when I hit the dance floor with all the hot ladies, followed up by a night of sex..........I DONT HAVE ANY FRIENDS AND I DRINK ALONE *Sob*.
- notwizt, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5That means you can drink 12 Guiness a day if you don't eat anything! Woho!
- Ralph23, on 07/18/2008, -4/+8Dig-Dugged
- inactive, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4Alcohol is a diuretic.
So, yes, you might lose a lot of weight from all that urine coming out of out. But it's put right back on the next day when you have a couple glasses of water.
Not to mention your body goes into fat-storage mode while you have alcohol in your system. So instead of burning flab while you're on the dance floor, your body is probably eating its own muscle mass to power your drunken dancing. - calon9, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3My blurry post-lasik eyes thought the title was asking "Which Cockroaches Pack The Most Calories?" and I was wondering how they could read my mind.
- helenkupo, on 07/18/2008, -2/+5This is why I ride my bike to the bar.
- beargrylls, on 07/18/2008, -3/+6NBC11 stories --> stupid spammy comments = bury
- kiiwii, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3Holy crap... 50 calories per oz in a margarita?!
I'd like to see the breakdown of calories for each ingredient... - Walcherina, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3Can't go wrong with captain and diet coke.
- inactive, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3If a drink has a word like "buttered" or "creamy," isn't it just common sense to assume it's packed with calories?
- dxgg, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3Spammy and intrusives. Dishonest life style. i bury

Nobody drinks these in the middle of summer it's all Pina Coladas and frozen Margaritas this time of year. - daftstar, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3weed is calorie free
- inactive, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Ton of sugar in that
- camaroz06, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2After a night of heavy drinking I always weigh myself and I am usually a few pounds lighter compared to the previous day (BTW I dont vomit...most the time). Anyways my question is do some people actually lose weight when drinking?
- brettg102, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2I would love for bars to make a real, proper Long Island...they are always some cheap, vodka laden sour mix concoction. I want my legit 5 liqour, splash of sours spalsh of coke LIIT dammit!
- iPood, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill Nye the Science Guy!
- jfg84, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Guiness Draught is actually even better. I think it's around 130 calories per bottle- about 30-40 cals more than a light beer and easily one of the best non-light beers.
Sugar-free Kool-Aid (3 calories, 11% daily vitamin C) and vodka (around 60 calories) FTW! - BobMysterioso, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2its due to the sugar based sourmix.
- brettg102, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Make it good stuff too. Ketel One ftw.
- DrummerAndrew, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Dugg for the Shamrock in the Guinness. And if you drink enough, you can't say the word 'calorie,' which is nice.
- Scrappy1850, on 07/18/2008, -1/+3how many calories are in hairspray?
- MalTheObscure, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Man, Dave Foley should've been a fatty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epa5YZIJU8I
- bridow, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2where's the LIT? i used to drink 4-5 of those when i went out about once a week. i stopped when i read they were about 500 calories a piece!!
- iPood, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Then what does that say for Walter?
- metroidragon, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Captain's spiced is where it's at.
Or if I'm feeling it, you can always go Bacardi's 151. - inactive, on 07/17/2008, -3/+5Energy drinks - a better alternative yet I can't resist my temptation to sip in that Red Colorized Martini.
- tribble222, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2I thought atkins didn't like lots of carbs?
- brettg102, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2tequila, cointreau, lime, ice. Nothing more. Ever.
- BlackJackJester, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Kirkland Signature Five times distilled - total winner.
- Jynx97, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1I hate articles that make you click through each example.
It should be a rule on Digg. - Ladymongoose, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1If your Hot Buttered Rum only has 4 grams of fat, you are making it wrong. The version we use at Xmas time uses lots of butter and brown sugar and tons of rum. You're so tanked after 2 you don't care that it's more fattening than a cheesburger.
- fokov, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Scotch or Whiskey on the rocks, depends on budget :D Life is too short to drink cheap liquor!
- ajent420, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Guinness has always had a bad rap for how many calories it has
