Wells. Unlike any of the movie renditions, it directly addresses the notion that technological progress carries with it some rather problematic issues where class structure is concerned. The book obviously exaggerates the classes into an eventual evolution of two species, the underground dwelling Morlocks and the elite but vulnerable Eloi.
Since reading the book a few years back, my wife and I have taken to referring to people like those mentioned int he article, or on a larger scale people like Paris Hilton, as "Eloi". They're incredibly intellectually stunted (not that everyone needs to be a college professor), ignorant of anything of real import, and extremely dependent on various systems to support their lifestyle. Much like the Eloi in Wells' book, if their support systems were to come to a grinding halt, they would be at the mercy of those who are cunning by instinct alone (as the Morlocks in the book operated the machinery out of instinct and not knowledge).
We have Eloi and Morlocks in western society today. The middle class is vastly eroded. Those who've moved up are becoming Eloi. - missjewl, on 04/04/2008, -3/+36I think a lot of the problem is that mothers are increasingly wanting to be friends with their daughters, which means forgetting that the friend they are now taking to the spa with them could be 8 years old. Mothers are increasingly giving their children what they would like for themselves, not what the children need or even want. For the mother, they get to go where they want to go (the spa), and decide that their daughter must also want to go. The lines between responsible parent and friendship between a mother and child is getting blurred. It's more enjoyable for the mother to be having a spa day rather than go to the zoo, but it's important for the child to be able to act like a child and develop as children, not mini-beauty queens.
