- MeinKampfyChair, on 10/16/2008, -0/+10When I was younger my mom always read me a bedtime story. Followed by the Vulcan nerve pinch.
- kkashx, on 10/16/2008, -0/+7..days later
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -0/+7I have taken the odd sleeping pill every now and then. They are by no means a substitute for real, natural sleep.
Effects of sleeping pills:
-They are a double-edged sword. Meaning that they WILL make you go to sleep, but they can make you feel like pure crap the next day. They can make you extremely sluggish and tired for most of the morning.
-Some have anti-chologenic properties which make your throat and mouth extremely dry. I literally had to go to sleep with a big watter bottle next to my bed. You can wake up with a dry and burning throat.
-Insomnia can be pretty frustrating if you've got to go to work early the next day. You have two options 1) not take pills, not fall asleep, be really tired for the next day. 2) take pills, fall asleep, but you'll still be groggy and lethargic the next day.
Common-sense ways to get good sleep:
-Avoid excessive consumption of caffiene, high sugar and high preservative products.
-Do some rigorous exercise in the morning. Get your heart pumping and break a sweat. Do a bit of weights + aerobics.
-Try and get in a routine. Wake up each day at the same time and try to go to sleep at the same time - bonk2k, on 10/16/2008, -0/+6I got prescribed a bottle of sleeping pills, but I haven't taken one yet because the side effects are hallucinations. Hallucinating is fun and all but its a pain in the ass when you just want to go to bed. I usually read digg before I got to sleep so I'm afraid I'll start seeing Rick Astley and ascii pedobear dancing around my room.
- Amadeus2490, on 10/16/2008, -0/+5If you use the word "yummy" to describe anything other than food, you're an *****.
- Medicamusic, on 10/28/2008, -1/+6beat me to it.

zzZzzZzZZZZzzzZZ - CyberSmackdown, on 10/16/2008, -1/+6I've taken sleeping pills for several years (I'm 34 now) and I would agree, they are not the best thing to rely on for sleep. I have long term insomnia, however, I've been smart about it and never allow myself to become physically addicted to anything. Usually I just take Tylenol PM if I have to, but there are times when I'll need a prescription for Ambien for 6 weeks or so. After that you have to take a break...you can't get by taking pills every night. Other than than, baths, warm milk or tea, and just making an effort to wind down helps a lot.
I agree that sleeping pills are too liberally prescribed these days, but they can be very helpful in some cases. - LuckySephid, on 10/15/2008, -1/+5thats what masturbation was created for... err i mean sex with a girl
- arplayer2k, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4Or just light up a J......
- JackZim, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4Anyone ever tried Melatonin?
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -1/+4Lots of crystal meth is excellent for getting to sleep.
- Rotzooi, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3Homeopathy can't work. Diluting something until there is not one molecule of anything other than water left and claiming water has "memory": ridiculous.
I don't know Calms Forte, it might be a herbal remedy, sold as homeopathic, so it might work. True homeopathy though: don't waste your money. - emjaymj, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3***** weed is better than premium bud for falling asleep. The THC is like a mild psychedelic and tends to make your thoughts more active. It's actually worse for me than not taking anything at all, because my mind is racing like a low dose of LSD.
- zantos420, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2to a nights rest you'll never wake up from lol
- Br3ach, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2I have long suffered sleep deprivation, and I can say that any medicines should be a short term use only for most cases. I have been through at least 6 of them by now.
Like anything eventually your body gets used to it, and it quits working, putting you back to your sleep deprived, angry, bitchy, irritable, and depressed self.
If you cant sleep, try to find the real core of the problem. Find those stresses that keep you awake and night and crush them, dont drink caffinated things before bed (at least 4-6 hours), make sure you are comfortable when you sleep (anything hurt when you get up in the morning?).
Most of all dont use alcohol or weed to sleep, these will lead you down the road to addiction as it did me. If anything you can get a sleep study done, that can find the real problem and get a real solution. - psykiv, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2Dugg for dancing ascii pedobear.
- Vindicoth, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2Thats creepy.
- LexMortis, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2Alright, I've used some similar software ("brainwave generator" if I recall correctly), and it does work.
I used this when I had trouble sleeping/falling asleep and I can honestly say that it works.
My setup was laying in bed with headphones on and the brainwave thing on, another program would auto switch off the computer after like 30mins or so. By that time I would be really close to sleeping, so I just had to slip the headphones off and I would fall asleep.
Now I just use melatonin, but it's still very interesting stuff.. - psykiv, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2Same here. I bought some OTC sleeping pills a few months ago and took 4 times the recommended dosage (said to take 2, I took 8) and I was still up all night!
Oddly enough caffiene pills don't do anything to keep me awake when I am sleepy. Another time I took eight no doz (bit of a crazy dosage) and I was sleeping like a baby less than 2 hours later.
Guess my body sleeps when it wants to, and stays awake when it wants to, and no pill is changing that :( - Elderon, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2different strokes for different folks. Hot baths might relax tense muscles from sports, but they do not make me sleepy. I try to relax and then I get fidgety and end up getting out of the bath after like 20 minutes. plus I hate the pruning on my fingers after a bath when I use the computer.
- Smiley09, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2Risk of dependency, that's my favorite kind of risk; besides that which entails global domination.
- X9001, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2You will go to sleep...after you eat yourself out of house and home
- aydoubleyou, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2Sometimes it can keep you awake.
- passedoutghost, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Hello, it's called chloroform!
- Meocross, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1I took sleeping pills once, no effect what so ever, my folks says the pills work, but for me i barely felt sleepy.
- RMBarry, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Its advisable not to use Sleeping Pills. There are natural ways where u can sleep sound... Here is a Sleep Naturally Research Report - http://www.rmbarry.com/research/sleep.html Read and feel free to comment!
Thanks - emjaymj, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1I have sleep problems and have gone through many sleeping meds with my doctor. Benadryl, which is OTC, doesn't work that well and makes me feel like absolute ***** the next day. What ended up working for me was Restoril (temazepam), and it doesn't knock me out at all. In fact, I feel more refreshed than ever when I take a capsule the night before. Whether or not somebody will feel groggy the next morning depends on the person, dose, and the half-life of the drug
But dependence is really bad with benzodiazepines and similar drugs, even more so than opiates like morphine and heroin. And you end up developing a tolerance which make the pills become ineffective over time. My doctor and I both feel it's best if I only get an allowance of 6 30mg temazepam per month for when my sleep schedule is way too much of a mess.
Your common-sense suggestions are right on though, and should be attempted before resorting to drugs - m0llusk, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Sleeping pills don't work and often cause harm. There is a great University of California video about this on YouTube.
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1I took ambien for about a week after coming from back to the US From Asia. It helped immensely for getting my sleep schedule back to normal, but after a while it became really easy to just take one when it wasn't completely necessary. Just be careful because they can be very habit forming.
- W00DR0W, on 10/16/2008, -2/+3Yet another reason to legalize weed. One brownie, you can knocked yourself right out.
- Rotzooi, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1It works for a lot of people. I use 6mg (OTC in the US, in most European countries either illegal (!) or only on prescription) to prevent the worst effects of jet lag. Stay in a darkened room though (light suppresses melatonin), and be prepared for some freaky dreaming.
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1In Australia they only sell the watered-down version that's not really effective.
I did look into it because it seemed a much more natural supplement than the synthetic chemical tablets. - emt1451, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1About the dumbest thing I've read on digg.
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Research - Binaural Tones... I use an iphone app called Mindwaves - you will sleep well no need for pills!
- Myztry, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1On a normal day I go to bed about 12pm. Get to sleep about 3 am. And (forceably) awaken about 8am. Basically I have a 30 hour circadian rhythm which means I'm constantly adjusting to the regular cycle which really sucks.
Anyway, the sleep medicine I have taken does help to a degree (brings it back to about a 1am retirement) but has limits for how long it can be safely taken.
Frankly, managing sleep if enough of a health issue with managing toxin build up requiring cessation. Luckily being psudeo self employed and being the paymaster I have lee-way.
There's certainly no benefit to be gain from being 'exceptional'... - Medicamusic, on 10/28/2008, -1/+2get better weed.
- richmondphotog, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Melatonin pills are good. And you don't need a prescription.
- richmondphotog, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Melatonin works. I am 6ft 200lbs and 5-6 mgs does the trick. But it doesn't knock you out like drugs. But it starts the process. Its relatively cheap to buy so try it if you have doubts.
- yahoofrom, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1the pic is sexy.
- LexMortis, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1I take melatonin every day before I go to bed because otherwise I can't fall asleep (if you have similar problems I can deffo recommend it). One of the side-effects of melatonin is more vivid dreams.. and possible equally vivid nightmares. I love to read the stories by HP Lovecraft (especially the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_Cycle), I mostly read before I go to bed. Bad idea.. Lovecraftian horror stories about dreams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamlands) and vivid nightmares REALLY don't mix. Although I must say, while they are proper scary nightmares and I do get freaked out, they are rather interesting to say the least... and that's why I keep taking the melatonin and keep reading Lovecraft...
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1I just down a half a 5th of cheap, cheap rum. Makes it easy to fall asleep.
But if I drink the whole 5th, I am up all night for some reason. - klawless, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1I have the most amazing intense awesome dreams ever when I take melatonin. And it does help me sleep really well. While I find actual sleeping pills 1. don't work for me all the time and 2. Make me feel like I've slept -3 hours when I get up in the morning.
- smrekar, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1not waking up = stop taking pills
smrekar 2 - article 0 - dcmcderm, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Getting to sleep? Easy. Keep a bottle of jack daniels on your nightstand. Take a swig if you don't feel tired. Repeat as necessary.
- riptor666, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1They are shown to disrupt your natural sleep cycles and disrupt REM do a little research first before spouting off ignorance. Without reaching REM your entire night of sleep means *****.
- Myztry, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1My ex-wife is a long term stoner. I've experienced lots of dope.
The stuffs just *****. Even the so called 'good stuff' - Meocross, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Your genes must be made of steel. EIGHT PILLS!? hell no.
