- 2612, on 03/30/2009, -10/+115Debbe - you're kind of pathetic. Need to text your kids so you can feel "hip"?
"When I ask, the parents tell me they wish they had our strength."
Well, your husband's strength. And you don';t want to disagree with him in front of the kids so write an article for the NYT with your picture attached? Passive-aggressive, much? - Formaldehydex2, on 03/30/2009, -6/+61Step 1: Remove text messaging from family plan
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit! - inactive, on 03/30/2009, -7/+52Or you could educate your children so they're not a bunch of retards by the time they hit driving age. If you weren't a bunch of douchebags who sired other douchebags maybe your douche children wouldn't be texting while driving.
- jaredmac11, on 03/30/2009, -2/+37I wouldn't entirely mind texting from a parental standpoint. Bullying is still going to exist. Either from myspace, facebook, what have you. It's the texting while driving that is really unnerving. coming from a college town, it's not too often to look over to other drivers and seeing them stare at their phone, thumbing away. It's something that needs to be dealt with.. and soon.
- Maddoktor2, on 03/30/2009, -3/+35The kids had a privilege - a cell phone with texting. That privilege was abused, and appropriate discipline meted out.
They should be happy they still have cell phones at all.
Dad has the right approach.
But, mom also obviously wants to be a friend to her daughter. Well, that can wait until she turns 18. Until then, her job is to be a parent. After, she can be as "hip" as she wants to be. That's how it's supposed to work.
Kids need boundaries and discipline. They're lucky to have such good parents. - inigomntoya, on 03/30/2009, -3/+32Exactly. Like talking to each other face to face.
Pfft. We didn't need stinking cell phones to communicate when I was in high school... - MaxxusFlamus, on 03/30/2009, -2/+27buried for recommending Atlas Shrugged like the sheep you are.
Just beat your children people. It's cheaper than buying a piss assed book. - Thomaschaaf, on 03/30/2009, -0/+24Phone companies now let you pay an extra fee to limit the unlimited texting you pay for in the first place. LOL
- howclever, on 03/30/2009, -0/+23"Whenever the subject comes up, my husband calmly shakes his head no and stands his ground. I leave the room. I don’t want to disagree with him in front of our children, yet I secretly hope he’ll come around."
You "secretly hope" in the New York Times eh? How's that working out for you? - withoutamartyr, on 03/30/2009, -1/+24"Tell your daughter to read Atlas Shrugged"
I'm pretty sure that's a form of child abuse. - lisaawesome, on 03/30/2009, -6/+28What really bothered me is the "what dad says is law" attitude she kept promoting. She disagrees with him and texts herself but because he said no the kids can't? Way to teach your daughter how to sacrifice her own opinions in favor of upholding what the man says.
- MaxxusFlamus, on 03/30/2009, -6/+27txting is nice because it's a passive communication method. As more young people slowly grow up to be parents, it's going to carry over.
That said...parents need to grow some balls and discipline their children. Do not be afraid of a 4 hour lecture. Start early though. Preferably around age 4, and go from there. By the time the kid is 16 they'll have some sense. If lecturing does not work, do not be afraid to resort to beating them. No, not murder or assault. Slap them upside the head. Spank them when they're young. Let them know fear. - VisualRhetoric, on 03/30/2009, -6/+23IMO, the three most annoying current social-tech related trends are...
1) Teens/tweens/etc relentlessly texting each other
2) Adults "twittering"
3) Articles regarding either topic - semperfidoordi, on 03/30/2009, -16/+32More ***** journalism from the NYT.
"my husband took that RIGHT away from them."
Hmm deb, wasn't sure my 14 year old had the RIGHT to text. Quit being such a pus-parent. If you don't want them to text, tell them no and stfu.
"It makes me feel hip"
Gtfo this lady is a joke.
Oh P.S. a hundred messages a day isn't *****. - ChromaVita, on 03/30/2009, -0/+15The most annoying current trend is the use of the word tweens.
- Chompy, on 03/30/2009, -0/+14When I was a kid, bullies had to say nasty things to my face, the old fashioned way. What's next, internet beat-downs? Bullies are so lazy these days.
- Aeroboy, on 03/30/2009, -1/+15To borrow an idea from Jeremy Clarkson: snipers on bridges and overpasses.
- manacit2, on 03/30/2009, -0/+14They do. That's what the article is about.
- HamSandwich, on 03/30/2009, -0/+14A hundred messages a day is ridiculous.
- petebot, on 03/30/2009, -1/+15SRSLY?
- Chompy, on 03/30/2009, -0/+13Heh, these kids today, calling a ban on texting "draconian". Imagine the horror..
- Gguillorn, on 03/30/2009, -0/+12A hundred messages divided by the 16 hours you spend awake equals roughly one text every ten minutes all day long. That seems like a lot to me too.
- kalvinb, on 03/30/2009, -2/+14"Then the school called. She was caught texting in class. Trouble was, it was with me. I had texted her to let her know I needed her to babysit after school."
I my world you I'll get back to you when it's appropriate. The biggest problem with people these days is their distinct lack of patience.
"I check my blackberry on the way home from work, after dinner, before I go to bed, and as soon as I wake up. It makes me feel connected and important."
You know what will make you feel even more important? Making people wait on you. Work should stay at work. If someone contacts you with work related stuff after you are out of the office, guess what? They can wait until you're back in the office for you to respond. Unless it's an actual emergency and it's all hands on deck.
Being a gopher 24/7 doesn't make you important. It's makes you useful.
You need your kid to babysit, fine send them a non intrusive text message. And when your kid is ready, they'll give you an answer.
People act like text messages are a form of instant messaging. It should be viewed primarily as an answering machine. You leave a message if you don't know if it will bother them or not to call and the person will get back to you when they can.
Good on the dad for putting a squash on text messaging because the kid wasn't being responsible with it. Bad on at least the mom for not setting a good example.
Being contantly "on call" doesn't make you important. It makes you a slave. If you were important people would wait for you to get back to them. - insinuate, on 03/30/2009, -4/+15I wish people would realize just HOW lame they sound when they put stuff like that...I bet that poor girl is now the laughing stock of her middle/high school from the article.
- nilhilustfreder, on 03/31/2009, -1/+11Parents shouldn't have to be a "unit," they should use rational discussion, in front of the kids, in order to make a decision. Otherwise you end up with secret discussions in order to make any decision, which doesn't help anybody and never lets the kids learn how two equal adults can reach a compromise.
- deweyhewson, on 03/30/2009, -9/+19Text messaging is the bane of adolescent development.
Teenagers are supposed to feel socially awkward and feel a drive for independence. Being constantly connected through communication that is devoid of personal touches inhibits the very insecurities that normal development overcomes. Where is the independence developed if teenagers are connected to everyone they know 24/7? How is the insecurity of calling a girl/boy overcome if they never have to say more than, "U ME HANG 2NITE"?
And we wonder why modern youths don't "grow up", "move out", or have the ability to hold steady, serious relationships.
Is the technology a bad thing? Of course not. No technology is "bad". Fire in the right control is immensely powerful, but dangerous in inexperienced hands. - JeremyKrins, on 03/30/2009, -3/+13whatever, kids will find some other way to mess around
- lisaawesome, on 03/30/2009, -0/+10I came back to add I don't think you should discount the father's opinion either but both parents should have a hand in and support the decisions. I grew up in a house where the children were entirely raised by mom and dad had nothing to do with us but the second he decided something it became law regardless of what my mom thought even though she was the one raising us and carrying out the decision. You need to be a parental unit. The kids know when the parents aren't unified and they will take advantage of it and then you end up on that Super Nanny show. Unfortunately it tends to be the mom submitting to the dad which sends a horrible message to both your male and female children.
- RandomGorilla, on 03/30/2009, -0/+9Yeah, but usually SMART people don't text WHILE DRIVING. Dumbass.
- danwallace, on 03/30/2009, -1/+8At what point exactly did you turn into a stereotypical change-fearing old fart who blames anything new on what's wrong with "kids these days"? People have been pointing the blame on an assortment of different things for what they feel is "wrong" with the upcoming generation. Get over it. Nothing is wrong with them just as nothing was wrong with us in comparison to our parents generation.
- mercury187, on 03/30/2009, -0/+7wrong, you can remove text features and put a "block" feature on instead, then the phone cant send or receive texts
- nepidae, on 03/30/2009, -2/+9Texting has nothing to do with 40 year olds still living with their parents...
- pinchduck, on 03/30/2009, -1/+8cancel the account and take away the phone. Done. You guys need any other parenting advice?
- Damaos, on 03/30/2009, -0/+7Because not everyone on digg is 12 years old like you
- Nintendesert, on 03/30/2009, -1/+8I bet you did.
- kinseyincanada, on 03/30/2009, -0/+7are you ***** kidding me? look at the damn headline at least.
- Y0tsuya, on 03/30/2009, -1/+7There's no teachin' like a good old-fashioned beatin'.
- s73v3r, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6I liked the part when the mom texted her daughter WHILE SHE WAS IN CLASS and was surprised that she got caught.
- Josexph, on 03/30/2009, -3/+9limiting unlimited texting....fail
- K4Lic0, on 03/30/2009, -4/+10Probably because religion class is stupid and boring?
- nomadofthehills, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5They published that piece of trash?
- RansomHoldiay, on 03/30/2009, -4/+9it's like trying to stop the tide with your fingers. texting is here to stay.
(a lesson the riaa could learn [but with torrents, etc.]) - inactive, on 03/30/2009, -1/+6I'm honestly not sure what the kids did wrong in the first place. What next, banning your kids from talking to other kids? If it were an issue where, say, they ran up the phone bill with their texting, I'd understand, but all they did was use an available service to communicate with their friends. Why is that suddenly a crime? Kids need limits and boundaries, but this one seems pretty arbitrary.
- JKount, on 03/30/2009, -4/+9These comments are terrible.
- jitterbits, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5lol, I wonder what she does when she wishes loudly!
- Dauntless1, on 03/30/2009, -2/+7Saying that you rule by fear just because you spank your children is making the assumption that your child is too brain damaged to understand WHY they got spanked. Ask any normal psychologist and children are smart enough to tell the difference between spanking for behavior and spanking for no reason from 5-6 years of age on. Underestimating your child's intelligence is one of the most stupid mistakes a parent can make.
- Gguillorn, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5I love self-earned wealth, but god dammit I hate Ayn Rand. Also, at fourteen you have just gotten your working papers.
- real, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5Well said!
- oveedrx, on 03/30/2009, -1/+5no, it says Error for you, and when your texted, the other person gets a Non Subscriber / Wrong number text back immediately.
At least in Canda / Sk - jikmo, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4Verizon does it too.
