A Google Scholar search for "testosterone death athlete" turned up the following:
http://www.springerlink.com/content/1gjkvmvk21ydqa51/fulltext.pdf
From the abstract: "The case of sudden cardiac death of a 23-year-old body builder who used anabolic steroids combined with other performance enhancing drugs is reported. Postmortem investigations revealed cardiac hypertrophy, acute cellular necrosis and interstitial fibrosis of the myocardium. The side-effects and interactions of the substances used are discussed."
From the discussion: "The effects of anabolic-androgenic steroids could be demonstrated both in studies on primary myocardial cell cultures [41] and in experimental animals [5, 29, 55]. In addition, quantitative electron microscopy showed an enlargement of the sarcoplasmatic space and a disbalance of the mitochondrial/myofibrillar ratio. When the administration of anabolic steroids and training were combined, some pathological alterations such as destruction of mitochondria and aberrant myofibrils, focal dehiscent intercalated discs and necrotic cells [3] or mitochondrial disruption and a decrease in myocyte capillary supply [53] have been found. There is also evidence of an increased collagen production in experimental animals given steroids [55]. Structural alterations to the heart have also been observed in humans. Luke reported the case of a 21-yearold, previously healthy, steroid-abusing weight lifter who died of cardiac arrest [34]. In addition to renal hypertrophy and hepatosplenomegaly, biventricular hypertrophy could be detected. The myocardium showed extensive fibrosis, small foci of necrosis and myocytes with contraction band necrosis."
The article cited this one:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=2148179&dopt=Abstract
Abstract: "A 21-year-old, previously healthy weight lifter collapsed during a bench press workout. He had taken anabolic androgenic steroids parenterally for the previous several months. Pertinent autopsy findings included marked cardiac and renal hypertrophy and hepatosplenomegaly, with regional myocardial fibrosis and focal myocardial necrosis. Nandrolone (19-nor-testosterone) metabolites were identified in postmortem urine. The possible etiologies of the cardiac findings are discussed."
I'm sure I could find more, but you only asked for one... - lemonloser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9i wanna be pretty.
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"...in the lab, it has a greater effect on muscle definition than muscle strength." - from my experience, athletes are just as obsessed with how they appear as they are with their performance. Maybe these guys just want their muscles to look prettier?
- M0b1u5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9HGH will eventually result in the condition called acromegaly, where the hands, feet and face will grow to bizarre proportions. It's a pretty hideous disease really.
You'd be a ***** moron to take HGH without a strict medical regime, and oversight. - VhaidraU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6HGH usage has also been associated with enlarged heart deaths. :-(
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You can keep your post-steroidal muscle as long as you keep working hard. The problem is, that once people experience the crazy gains they get with steroids, they will always turn to them. I know some people that use or have used them, and steroids are unbelievably effective. Want to gain 30 pounds of muscle mass in 6 weeks and drop your body fat to 3%? No problem if you use the right roids.
Personally, I've never taken them. The side effects are terrible. You'll probably die 20 years sooner.
HGH can be just as dangerous. Your heart can grow with HGH and you can die from it being constricted in your chest cavity. There is one very promising treatment they are working on for people with muscular dystrophy which involves trying to block a certain enzyme which regulates when your muscles "regenerate". Animals that have been genetically engineered to lack this enzyme are like Incredible Hulk animals without even working out. Apparently it only acts on skeletal muscles also, so no worries about the enlarged heart thing.
For me, I'll just stick to hard work and eating right. - ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Although I hate that HGH gets so much negative press, I suppose more people using it might drive down the cost for people who actually need it. I used HGH to combat a deficiency for 10 years, to tremendous positive effect.
And yes, it did make me look better (not a midget!) and it gave me a deep voice :) - insomuchas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Actors take it to stay looking young, not to build muscle. Looking young prolongs their careers.
- hootpie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Human Growth Hormone = exactly that. It increases muscle size, but it also increases the size of things that you want to stay the same, namely the heart. HGH is also responsible for the unpleasant "distended gut" you see in the really big bodybuilders e.g. Ronny Coleman
- subsonik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4NO2 is garbage. Money would be better spent on proper food, protein, vitamins, and if you wish to go pro, the gear. Otherwise, none of that crap will make you into a monster overnight.
Creatine is one of the few things I've known to make one look a bit fuller and harder, but nothing beats a proper regimen. Shortcuts make you short yourself. - jforman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7(comment removed -- I suck at digg)
- Qligula, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7This is a totally uneducated article, as are 99% of pop journilism "writings" on the subject. I could give an elaborate written argument on the subject, but I do not have the time. What I do have the time for is the challenge to any Digg reader to find ONE peer reviewed article or paper that concludes that drugs (not just the limited category of steriods, which most uneducated folk cite) have killed someone looking for athelitic gain.
- insomuchas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3approx half of the life expectancy for a male in the US ;) (middle age)
- duzytata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Reminds me of this story, Sylvester Stallone busted importing human growth hormone into Australia.

I really wanted to believe Rocky was barn built, but i guess not... :-( - PhilosopherKing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3HGH muscle growth is permenant because it creates an increase in the number of muscle cells rather than an increase in the size of muscle cells. Why take steroids if the muscle will shrink soon after one goes off them?
- tekrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Along the same line the article mentioned this: "At the end of the six-month treatment period, the test subjects had denser bones, thicker skin, less fat, and more lean body tissue."
The drug helps them to look better and repair tissue faster. Its a 'stay young drug' which could add 5-10 years to an athlete's multi-million dollar career. - ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nope, never heard that was a possible side effect either.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Take steroids and this is what you get:

http://adsoftheworld.com/media/print/skins_hairy_women_4 - oneade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2btw cortisone is not an anabolic steroid. you probably took it to reduce inflammation eg. for joint pains.
- ivec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The article is totally understating the side-effects of the HGH use.
There are visible morphological changes (acromegaly - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acromegaly) that are not reversible, the heart problems other mentioned. It also can trigger a diabetes.
In the beginning of the 20th century, professional sportsmen used to live longer than the average population, with a better quality of life. Now the top football players die in their forties. Great.
Sure, the dealers and moron users will tell you that this next best thing is so much better and safer than the previous ones. "This is like pot while the other one was like coke". *****.
No thanks ! - Whoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it was an ok article but eny one who has researched about steroids knows that it is actually a really safe drug if used Correctly. heh it was less toxic than alcohol and ciggarets i belive on the chart on digg the other day!
- subsonik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Greg Valentino...don't listen to that steroid making his arms blow out crap. He was injecting synthol as well as using gear. Synthol is an oil that fills up the spaces within the muscle tissue and is eventually absorbed by the body. He most probably went too far and developed an abscess or something. Many pros use it to balance out their weak parts. It's frowned upon, but steroids are frowned upon too, right?
As much as I hate to use Wackapedia, here goes:

- subsonik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's your age if you don't mind disclosing it? :)
- ZeroFresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
- AkiraXXX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I loved this quote: "So far, no one has been able to connect the increase in lean body tissue caused by HGH with enhancement of athletic performance."
So I guess a pro athlete would be alright with 10 or more pounds of useless fat on their bodies since it wouldn't affect their performance? Please! Any pro athlete over the age of 30 will tell you how much harder it is to keep the extra pounds off. As I'm running up and down the court, around the bases, up the pitch or toward the tape, I'm certainly going to be glad I don't have that middle age spread to lug around. And even if it didn't affect performance, who will be signed up for the endorsements, a normal looking person or a chiseled god?
Pro sports is about money and fame. People need to leave their quaint notions of athletics in the same box that holds fantasies about business ethics and honest politicians. It is sad, but it is true. - ZeroFresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any effects on the old kick stand?
Drugs of these sort scare me because they have the potential to take away the effectiveness of my favorite extremity. - DrewBledsoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stallone was using HGH to get jacked, actors get botox and plastic surgery to look young. If you've seen Rocky Balboa, then you'd know that 60+ year old men are not supposed to be that ripped.
- oneade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1His arms are not the result of steroid or hgh use, but rather injection of oil into the muscle causing it to inflate. kinda like plastic surgery without the plastic.
- anotherdiggdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Steroids give you zits, back hair, shrink your nuts and make you grow man boobs.
HGH makes your head grow to the size of a watermelon, a.k.a Barry Bonds enormous mellon. - Linguino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The ignorance level of articles dealing with steroids, and compounds, seems to be at an all time high.
First, anabolic/androgenic steroids are perfectly safe, if used in moderation. Most bodybuilders use much higher doses. The side effects are the effects you can expect a male to get with increased estrogen, DHT, and progesterone levels... Male pattern boldness, acne, aggression, unwanted hair growth, and so on.
HGH is also safe, if used properly. Which is never the case in bodybuilding. By itself, it does not do much of anything great, unless you are dying from AIDS, but in combination with IGF like peptides, insulin, and steroids it can work very well for building muscle.
If used alone, HGH will just burn a little fat. For that, bodybuilders use something much much more worse, a compound that you will die from, that is carcinogenic, tetragenic, and mutagenic : DNP.
These days, as opposed to the days of Arnold, most bodybuilders are nothing more than walking pharmacies, that are bloated, fat, and acne-prone. Even the guys in magazines look NOTHING like what they do in pictures, most of the year... Drugs are taken to lose the bloat and achieve hardness. Just add 50 pounds of water, and you get the picture.
The focus on what really matters in muscle building is left out, DIET. And a quick fix is turned to. - Vacinchipi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't need to hear about deaths. That body builder who exploded his own arms was enough for me
- insomuchas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have never taken HGH but I have taken herbal supplements which cause the body to increase HGH levels. The secret with them is to not do them too often. They do work and keep me from looking my age. They also cause the pituitary gland to give me a headache if I take too much too often. So I take half the dose prescribed and only for a few weeks at a time and then take several months off. I do occasionaly get growing pains while on them and that is kinda weird when youre approaching middle age. But thats how I know its working. Its just a way to offset the aging process, it shouldnt be illegal, its apersonal choice. The supplements I use arent illegal. They sell them at Vitamin world.
- Bluebuilder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Agreed, the author of this article really failed to do and unbaised review of the body of evidence on this topic.
Comparing HGH and steroids to pot and Heroin is ridiculous. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2gregg valentino

the man whos arms exploded - absteroids, on 06/15/2009, -0/+0There are better, healthier, ways to boost performance including strength training and eating healthy than HGH and steroids use...
http://www.buyonlinesteroids.com/ - Steroid Abuse and Side Effects - miamibest, on 02/25/2008, -0/+0Just my two cents, I think that there is a difference between the two. Most people on HGH used to be older people looking for the Fountain of Youth, whereas Steroids is mostly targeted and used by people that wanna get huge and ripped. In the end both are just products that assist you in attaining some type of enhancement to your physical appearance, BUT hgh is suppose to a lot safer. http://learnhgh.com is a site that used to updated the stuff on it but it seems like they've been dormant for awhile.
- legnasin, on 12/12/2008, -0/+0Try the herbal alternative! especially this one....www.usplabsdirect.com
It is a product called "Powerfull" and it works! safe and not side effects!Fyi, it will crush all doubts about the typical herbal products. - miamibest, on 11/09/2008, -0/+0I've been doing more research on the topic and does anyone know of any good legit hgh therapies anymore, i've been through a bunch of sites but most of them lead to the same site. if you look at THEFTCRUEL.INFO, UPSETFEMALE.INFO, or UVEASVIOLENT.INFO and they all go to ghrp, i contacted them and they seem really good. Just wondering if anyone has tried them?
- markm455, on 04/15/2008, -0/+0Most people are completely uninformed on Human Growth Hormone. And that includes the people taking it. If you are considering being a user... be sure to get educated first. A good place to start would be at http://www.steroidsexpert.com
- dioxide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0there's nothin like the ring of seventeen to slip past all the defenses and PUMP YOU UP
- 1smartguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0oneade cortisone is a steroid hormone
- 1smartguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0http://www.elitefitness.com/articledata/hbosteroids/ Hbo's real sports with
Bryant Gumbal, did a special on steroids. If your interested in this subject its a must see. He got some long time users on the show and they seem to debunk the whole steroids are bad for you press. I got a shot in the ass from a doctor, I think it was cortisone, I felt like superman for a few days. I've had localized shots before but this ***** was awesome. For sure elite athletes have at the very least benefited from short term usage of 1 steroid or another for recovery from injuries. This web site post a link to the program. - Ibanezfoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1What do you think about that No2 (and whatever else its marketed as) stuff? I have some friends that swear by it. I've been going to try it but I'm actually too lazy to get to the gym let alone order some.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Come on man, they take it to get HiGH.
**ducks** - Slasher27, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Maybe they all should have finished grade school..
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Because they can get some Anna Nichole Smith a$$ for giving it to her...
Edit: Also, it's less likely to give you cancer and medically neuter you.... And steroids don't make you grow muscle faster, they only allow you to recover from a workout more quickly... avoiding the "plateau" many gym regulars hit.
