- lead2thehead, on 02/28/2009, -1/+19This wouldn't be a problem if people would actually read a nutrition book. But people are always following the latest diet trend and ignoring everything else... and that 90% of the time, that causes more problems than it solves.
Like back in the 90s when everybody had fat phobia. The media was pushing this idea that eating fat made you fat, so the knee-jerk reaction of the ignorant masses was to cut out fat completely. In response, the food industry made fat free versions of everything. What people didn't realize is that "fat free" does not mean "sugar free", and obesity rates went through the roof because the fat was being replaced by ridiculous amounts of processed sugar.
That's like this woman, cutting all of the sodium out of her son's diet. That is absolutely retarded. Your body needs sodium to regulate its water balance. If you cut all of the sodium out of your diet, you'll have kidney problems. Not to mention that this kid's fear of sodium is probably causing more stress on his heart than the sodium would. - twipley, on 02/28/2009, -2/+18so our kids are being eaten?

- Sodium, 2009 - inactive, on 02/28/2009, -0/+11Eat in moderation, eat your fruits and veggies and all that good stuff. Do that, and you'll be fine. You're not gonna keel over for not being absolutely perfect.
- inactive, on 02/28/2009, -7/+17You should be afraid. American food is horribly contaminated with harmful ingredients.
- inactive, on 02/28/2009, -3/+13In a free country, you're allowed to be unhealthy.

- wallyhartshorn, on 02/28/2009, -0/+10I recommend reading "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan. The bumper sticker summary is "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." One of his main arguments is that we replace "nutritionism" (a focus on which nutrients we eat) with an emphasis on eating "real" foods -- stuff that doesn't require a factory to create it. One of the best bits of advice from the book is to buy groceries from the perimeter of the grocery store. In most groceries, you will find the processed foods -- the TV dinners, snack crackers, etc -- in the aisles. Around the edges, you will find the fruits, vegetables, dairy, breads, and meats.
It's a fairly short book (244 pages) and is a quick read.

If you'd like more information about the science and politics of food, try "The Omnivore's Dilemma", also by Michael Pollan.

- inactive, on 02/28/2009, -1/+9Sodium Chloride is a valuable electrolyte. TRY living without it. Iodine in the commercial salt in the US is needed to prevent goiter. This kid is getting bad information.
- neozeed, on 02/28/2009, -3/+11Gee and with lead being found in all the HFC, and all the other industrial byproducts in the food how can you *NOT* be obsessed with finding something that won't poison you? Has everyone forgotten how melamine is now 'acceptable'?
Nice hit peice, I like how they ignore real health risks in the food, and make everyone sound nucking futs. - sbcjr, on 02/28/2009, -3/+11Good, balanced article- thanks for sharing!
- inactive, on 02/28/2009, -2/+9Maybe you should fight for your own freedom not to pay for someone else's health care, instead of attacking another person's freedom?
Just a thought. - davegallagher, on 02/28/2009, -5/+12The only food that's "bad" is food that makes you sick:
1) Poisonous food
2) Food that's contaminated/moldy
3) Food you're allergic to
4) Food you can't eat due to a medical condition
I guess you could also add "food that willll injure you when eaten" to that list. :) All other food can be eaten safely in moderation.
What classifies as "in moderation"? That depends on the specific food, relative to all other foods in your diet. - DirtyVicar, on 02/28/2009, -1/+8So cherry-flavored used motor oil is "bad"?
- neozeed, on 02/28/2009, -2/+9Anyone who would digg it down is a moron or a shill for morons... HFC is the WORST. Go to Canada, Europe, Asia, and see they don't use this crap ANYWHERE. Not even in the heinz ketchup.
Hell even the cola stuff in Mexico doesn't use HFC.
They are killing YOU with this *****. - riffic, on 02/28/2009, -1/+8All things in moderation, especially moderation in douchebag comments.
- inactive, on 02/28/2009, -4/+11When someone's obsessive about something, that's not willpower. Just FYI. Good for them for eating healthy, but they have as much control over their actions as a fat person shoveling twinkies into his mouth.
- Qbryzan, on 02/28/2009, -0/+7You're wrong about cyanide and arsenic. "Moderation" for them would be what are called "micro-doses", but these very, very small doses have been demonstrated to stimulate biological repair mechanisms, which then overcompensate to the damage, and result in a net health gain.
- DirtyVicar, on 02/28/2009, -0/+6Well said -- some people I cared about were on that ***** "fat free" kick and were oblivious to the calories and carbohydrates. Guess what? A little fat is one of the signals that turns off hunger, so when you deprive yourself of it, you get pretty damn hungry. Those people never lost much weight, btw.

- SpeedyG, on 02/28/2009, -0/+5Really? The discussion is about people's diets and eating habits. Cyanide? Arsenic? The contents of light bulbs? Huh?
I guess if you're trying to turn the healthy eating up to 11, so to speak, I guess some of that wall of text is worth while.
But, if you actually read the article, you'd see that the very sort of paranoia that you're insisting everyone have about what they put in their bodies is leading kids down the path of eating disorders. Eating disorders kill people, including those who "think" that what they're doing is healthy and necessary to be healthy.
You know what else is bad for your body? Stress. Such as stressing out all the time about what you put in your body.
The rule of thumb about moderation IN YOUR DIET generally works, Just because you can come up with anecdotes where moderation doesn't work doesn't disprove the general rule of thumb. The whole idea is to remind fanatics like you that it's OK to have something less healthy sometimes. That's it's OK to not watch your diet like a hawk all the time. As long as you make the effort to get what you need in your diet, you're probably just fine. Anything beyond that is likely to vary on a case-by-case basis. - BoneheadFarker, on 02/28/2009, -5/+10Oh yeah...fat people are always trying to sabotage skinny people. They even hold conventions who how to improve the sabotaging skills. You've just never heard of them because they hold the conventions at McDonalds.
- adverpart, on 02/28/2009, -2/+7"Kristie Rutzel, a 26-year-old marketing coordinator in Richmond, Va., began eliminating carbohydrates, meats, refined sugars and processed foods from her diet at 18. She became so fixated on eating only “pure” foods, she said, that she slashed her daily calorie intake to 500. Eventually, her weight fell to 68 pounds and she was repeatedly hospitalized for anorexia."
That's not healthy eating. It's a problem. It's ok to come up with names for problems. - MouserUK, on 02/28/2009, -1/+5We're not debating with you because you're a rude troll who has resorted to swearing to disguise his pathetic ignorance.
- sandyw123, on 02/28/2009, -7/+11Some good points, but don't underestimate the importance of being informed. Most of the conventional food is seriously lacking in nutritional value, is full of chemicals, and sometimes addictive.
- inactive, on 02/28/2009, -0/+4Especially because it is far more harmful to be thin but not fit than to be a little pudgy but in shape. The extra weight itself isn't the problem; rather, it's generally an indicator of diet/exercise. A skinny person who eats nothing but junk food and never exercises is at far greater risk, healthwise, than an overweight person who works out and has a good diet.
- Anon0101, on 02/28/2009, -0/+4So kids not eating cake is somehow symptomatic of an eating disorder?
- RobotBuddha, on 02/28/2009, -1/+5I'd think it was good if it was done in an educated way. Not the "Oh no, sodium!!!" way. I recently moved to northern michigan, and have been really shocked by how fat everyone is here. I mean, there's actual nature here! Kids can run around and play, their parents can hike, swim, whatever. But still, a large percentage of the kids and most of the adults are overweight.
Uneducated fear isn't the way to go. But I think their showing concern in any way is a positive sign. Just one that needs to be properly channeled. - whitej, on 02/28/2009, -2/+5Probably the same thing that was eating Gilbert Grape
- supernovasky, on 02/28/2009, -1/+4High fructose corn syrup... your daily dose of mercury.
- supernovasky, on 02/28/2009, -0/+3The problem is that HFCS has your daily dose of mercury in it per gram... 5.7 micrograms. The average american eats 12 grams a day.
- inactive, on 02/28/2009, -11/+14" Dr. Steven Bratman of Denver has come up with a term to describe people obsessed with health food: orthorexia. "
Leave it up to a medical "professional" to develop a derisive catch phrase for healthy eaters and people with more willpower than most can dream of. Its not easy to maintain a strict diet in this country and now even doctors want to get in on pressuring you to eat garbage. There is constant social pressure to eat the rubbish that others do.
As soon as your coworkers notice that you don't consume the doughnuts, candy, soft drinks, etc which are brought into the office they will go out of their way to offer them to you. Then anyone nearby will watch to see if you accept . Don't let them fool you, fatties resent thin people and will try to sabotage them at every opportunity. - supernovasky, on 02/28/2009, -1/+4Lol.
A "good" type of mercury.
I'm sorry, but if the FDA is not sure what kind of mercury we are ingesting, then I am not content to eat it. Especially when the FDA limits exposure to 5.5 micrograms a day before you see problems.
Mercury ingestion leads to increased prevelence of alzheimers, stroke, heart attack, obesity, clouded thinking, memory problems, and cancer. What have we seen increasing in our society?
HFCS is horrible for you, 'nuff said. - EXTER, on 02/28/2009, -3/+6Good, encouraging reply- thanks for sharing!

- RISwampyankee, on 02/28/2009, -0/+3What was conspicuous by it's absence was any discussion of class and socio-economics. That kind of obsession over whether or not the food is 100% pure requires a good deal of free time and money, something working class and poor folk simply do not have. The irony is that markets in poorer neighborhoods, where there is a tremendous need for healthier foods, have more processed foods and fewer fruits and vegetables. So the rich get anorexic and the poor get Type II diabetes.
