Oh that's awful, I'll never drink those again!
*Sluurrp* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -23/+192Ahh... more ***** scare mongering.
When are you sheeple going to realize when people are trying to scare you, you are getting jerked off?
Remember eggs? For many years they (and milk) were supposed to be the best breakfast food around- high in protein. Then they were bad because of cholesterol. Then they were good again because it was good cholesterol. In the meantime- egg substitutes products were found to have toxic dyes, carcinogenic chemicals and caused bad allergic reactions in some people.
I think the moral of the story is to eat a sane, balanced diet, exercise and ignore scaremongers. - strangerzero, on 10/12/2007, -12/+160I would need to know where this blogger is getting these "facts" before I would believe this article. I'm not saying Coke is a healthy drink but the author needs to cite his or her sources when making these claims.
- ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -15/+145So the morale of the story is..
Don't do cocaine and drink coke at the same time? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -44/+147Pics or it didn't happen.
- Fejerro, on 10/12/2007, -9/+92This absolutely needs some references. I tried "myth-busting" that old story about Coke dissolving a tooth in 18 hours with my removed wisdom teeth. The tooth never dissolved, not after 2 weeks. It was dyed brown, but it didn't dissolve. I'm sure these "facts" are similar.
- 1021, on 10/12/2007, -26/+102come on... it's just a damn drink. It's not I'll die from drinking this coke righ..
- deuceswilde, on 10/12/2007, -9/+82I agree, most of them seem blown out of proportion and inconsistent with what almost everyone seems to experience.
- marm0t, on 10/12/2007, -6/+64I just opened a Can, took a sip, then looked at Digg :(
- appetite, on 10/12/2007, -7/+61james, why follow your advice when we could just live in a tasteless, motionless vat and live to be 300 years old?
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -4/+52And I'm doing lines of coke off a dirty prostitute's stomach!
- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+44"45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way."
I thought it was stupid to mention that its the same way heroin works. EATING ANY FOOD stimulates the pleasure center in your brain. - dagnabbit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41That's why I add a shot of rum to my coke, to dilute all that sugar. Don't forget the lime wedge for your daily fruit intake!
- Ashex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36I'm on to my third or fourth.
Damn these corporations and their free snacks/drinks policies... - HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Sounds like a challenge to me.
- livesNbox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35What I learned in pre-med school (yes I dropped out to become a computer programmer) was that DIET coke -- when drank with food -- makes you store MORE fat.
It, by itself, will not do that.. but basically it goes like this:
Your whole body is constantly looking for "equilibrium" or... everything to be "balanced" so..
The artificial sweeteners in the diet soda "seem" a lot sweeter than sugar to your body so your body responds by trying to get the sugar out of your bloodstream.. this causes your liver to start storing whatever sugar it can into fat. If you're JUST drinking diet soda, there's no "sugar" per se to be broken down into fat. But if you're eating dinner and drinking a diet soda then there usually are a lot of sugars in the food you are eating that can be. And since the artificial sweetener is so much sweeter than sugar, your body begins storing all sugars as fat right away.
I think most people don't understand that concept -- especially when I see 500 pound whales having fried chicken, french fries, a salad with 1000 island dressing and, of course, a diet soda.... - MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32Oh boy...I better stick to Pepsi then! :
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35thank you subby, i'm drinking a coke now... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32This sounds suspiciously like that ***** list of things that Coke can be used for, or how trucks carrying the syrup has to have a Hazard Material sticker on it. (All *****.)
Yup...gotta love Digg, where morons will believe anything written on a BLOG without even questioning.
Is soda good for you? No. Is it this horrible thing that destroy your body from the second you drink one? No. Enjoy it in moderation, get regular exercise and brush your teeth well. And you'll be fine.
I drink WAY too much Coke and Dr. Pepper. I am ridiculously UNDERWEIGHT and haven't had a cavity in years. (A good thing to do after drinking anything with a lot of sugar is to rinse your mouth with water, to neutralize the acids and to dilute the sugar that remains in your mouth. Brushing your teeth right after is NOT a good idea.) - scotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24i've quit drinking soda. i save the calories for beer.
- HardwareLust, on 10/12/2007, -13/+37Aside from the fact this is a blog post, with no citation as to source, it sure sounds to me like the guy has an axe to grind with Coke. Buried as inaccurate.
- Edogz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27@klawz,
Corn syrup is sugar. It's a highly refined and modified complex sugar in the form of fructose. I'd say it's much worse than sugar in terms of health.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_fructose_corn_syrup for more information!
=) - neoform, on 10/12/2007, -28/+51Soft Drinks are poison.
- Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -10/+33Abusing the comment system to point out the disclaimer on the bottom.
"*FYI: The Coke itself is not the enemy, here. It’s the dynamic combo of massive sugar doses combined with caffeine and phosphoric acid. Things which are found in almost all soda." - omgitscolin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Minus the munchies, of course.
- sinurgy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28All this has made me very thirsty...I'm heading to the vending machine!
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22How much caffeine is in a can of coke, anyway? Maybe I've desensitized myself to the effects of it (I am a big coffee drinker), but I don't feel any effects (like raised blood pressure, and then a crash). from drinking soda.
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24Well if you ate 25lbs of chocolate you would have the same effects of smoking marijuana.
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24"10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system."
and McDonald's Fries have 10 teaspoons of trans fat... - Rabbethan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Where did they get these "facts" from. Comparing it to heroin? He just seems to have a grudge against soda... Buried as inaccurate.
- aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22This is absolutely false. There is no orgasmic "rave" inside your body when you drink coke.
- iandanger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21@Triska
Unfortunately Coca-Cola is made with High fructose corn syrup, a highly concentrated form of sugar. It is not naturally occurring and the amount in a can of coke is about the same as 9-10 teaspoons of sugar.
Gross, but nevertheless the facts of the matter - HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Or, you know, drink water. Foreign concept, I know. Our bodies were only created to require water.
- Bega, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21it was less scaremongering, and more of a proper explanation detailing biological processes. Either way, we've heard it all before (albeit in different words). It's unlikely to change any people's minds instantaneously, but it certainly does makes you think.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Me too, actually.
- triska, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24I'm sorry, but this article hit pseudoscience the instant they mentioned 10 teaspoons of sugar without indicating how much coke that is it. I suspect they're repeating the ***** claim that each can of coke has 10 teaspoons of sugar
10 teaspoons of sugar in a can of water makes a thick syrupy liquid that's not drinkable, even if you could keep the sugar dissolved in that much water without crystallising out when cold, and it's nowhere NEAR the thin consistency of coke. 10 teaspoons in a small bottle of coke (slightly more liquid than a can) isn't much different, and you really need to move up to a large 600ml or 1 liter bottle of coke before the consistently is close, let alone the taste.
A single can of coke distills down into a tablespoon of thick syrupy liquid, containing all solids. If the coca-cola company has managed to fit 10 teaspoons of sugar plus the other solids in one tablespoon of syrup, then I guess they should be awarded for creating a new realm of physics.
No doubt there are problems with drinking coke, and it IS highly sugared, but spreading urban legends as fact is *****. - rmcody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14The article makes drinking Coke sound more fun than it really is.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16what about coke and pop rocks?
- ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16@ inbred
Diet coke with splenda is also a pretty good tasting alternative. Although, god knows what other effects these sugar substitutes have on the body. - ptevans, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Sounds somewhat overblown to me as well, for example:
"10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down."
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be vomiting if I ate 10 teaspoons of sugar right from the bag. Not saying it wouldn't make me feel like crap, but vomiting? I don't think so.
The caloric value alone is a good enough reason not to drink sodas. Add to that the corrosive effect of the carbonation on your esophagus and you can make a compelling argument to avoid the stuff. - webbsk, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22@Jo9100
Yup, I guess like Fry we're going to have to switch to Slurm (I just had my third heart attack). - kitchengeek, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20mlwarrior:
The Article states that a can of Coke has 10 tsp of sugar. In fact, a can of Coke has no more than 42g of carbohydrates, which works out to 8.8 tsp. Never mind that in the US, it's not actually sugar: it's high-fructose corn syrup, which is substantially denser than sugar and thus amounts to fewer tablespoons.
In any case: no matter how you slice it, there aren't 10 tsp of sugar in a can of Coke; the article is exaggerating for effect and is thus inaccurate
My Paypal address is bigkahuna@scowling.net. Thanks for lunch. - livesNbox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@Jugulator - how old are you? just curious....
Some people are lucky with great metabolism... - ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11There are a ridiculous amount of things that stimulate the pleasure center. It's all about how much stimulation it receives. Comparing coke to heroin in that respect is like saying "My RC toy tonka truck drives. You know what else drives? Race cars. They both drive."
Absurdity. - po43292, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Beer...the cause and solution to all of life's problems....ahhhh
- livesNbox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14your heart explodes..
- wobitnobby, on 10/12/2007, -29/+38...and on top of all of that, carbonated beverages are now linked to osteoporosis! And these kinds of pure sugars don't stimulate our satiety centers, so we keep on eating despite having ingested calories. Enjoy!
- WileEPeyote, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You're not drinking the right stuff then :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+21>>james, why follow your advice when we could just live in a tasteless, motionless vat and live to be 300 years old?
Argh... that would be 300 years too many - merr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10The way this reads, it almost reminds me of the story that was front-paged recently about what happens when the human body is exposed to the total vacuum of space.
