- UTSC, on 11/05/2009, -4/+50Calling exit signs Nuclear Material is a bit dramatic
- WordsnCollision, on 11/04/2009, -1/+38I thought it was "nucular".
- Mstayt, on 11/04/2009, -0/+34FTA: "The items in question were exit signs that contained tritium, a hydrogen isotope"
The entire article is talking about the signs.
Clearly you didn't read it. - borez, on 11/05/2009, -0/+33Now there's a headline I wasn't expecting today.
- doctechnical, on 11/04/2009, -1/+27I'd like to know how Walmart "cleaned up radioactive spills created by its broken signs" - tritium is a *gas*. That would be like trying to clean up a fart. Did they light a giant match or something?
- jrm125, on 11/05/2009, -3/+29For the majority of people at Walmart...it is.
- FormerBabby, on 11/05/2009, -2/+25Could that have been more sensationalized?
- maximilen, on 11/04/2009, -0/+23I always feel like a badass when I explain that my watch dials have rare, luminescent radioactive nuclear material in them.
- lindenwold, on 11/05/2009, -1/+22you seem like the kind of person who would stand on a broken escalator for hours . . .
- captininsanity, on 11/05/2009, -0/+20+2 Rad/Sec
- kevinmoore, on 11/05/2009, -0/+16That pronunciation only applied from 2000 through early 2009.
- ayeroxor, on 11/04/2009, -0/+16Right, because we have the uranium and the detonators and the casing, but we need to salvage our tritium from 3000 fire escapes
- lindenwold, on 11/05/2009, -2/+16i understand why "daily finance" would puplish this article.
i do not understand why it is on digg . . . or why i am taking the time to comment on it. . . . or why you bothered to read this far down in the comments. - inactive, on 11/05/2009, -1/+15You didn't even have to click on the ***** link to answer our question. It was in the DESCRIPTION!
- DreKor, on 11/05/2009, -1/+13So, if I throw away my old Timex watch, could I be charged with the same thing? Or is this a question of scale?
- publiclurker, on 11/04/2009, -0/+11Actually gaymathman, having the equivalent of a functioning nuclear weapon is the key ingredient. The tritium just helps you move the rubble around a little more.
- BREZZZ, on 11/04/2009, -0/+11Look out for that Americium in the smoke detector.
- Floyder, on 11/05/2009, -1/+11I guess I'll be doing the cleaning up then...
- santiago1, on 11/05/2009, -0/+10 I do not understand why I am replying to your comment
- swagv, on 11/05/2009, -2/+12That explains why my greeter looked like Vladimir Putin.
- BubblesTheChimp, on 11/05/2009, -0/+9Time for some Rad Away!
- ayeroxor, on 11/04/2009, -1/+10You can't weaponize tritium.
*rolls eyes* - MacGyver2210, on 11/05/2009, -1/+10Would "Thousands of WalMart Stores Ridden with Nuclear Waste" do it?
- KSUdesigner, on 11/05/2009, -1/+10aisle
- mkriss5681, on 11/05/2009, -1/+10Vice President Dr. Otto Octavius unavailable for comment.
- Darrelc, on 11/05/2009, -0/+8Ah you got me.
- Floyder, on 11/05/2009, -1/+9Clean up in isle 5...
- doctechnical, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8I was able to obtain some tritium key fobs. For some reason the NRC is OK with the watch and gun sights, but not these. Thank you, eBay :) It is damned handy when trying to find your keys in the dark.
- reaper527, on 11/05/2009, -1/+9maybe he was talking about part of an archipelago?
- craftyshrew, on 11/05/2009, -3/+11I almost made the same mistake Crazysticks did...commented without reading the description or article.
Thank my lucky stars I didn't...dugg down, being sworn at called out in-front of the digg masses. Not worth it. - serif69, on 11/05/2009, -0/+7I can't speak for these other animals, but I read this far and am commenting in hopes that somehow this gets more interesting than broken exit signs.
- MeLikeyTacos, on 11/04/2009, -1/+8They make tritium sites for guns as well...glows for ~10 years.
- penguinofspades, on 11/05/2009, -0/+7*ahem*
duh - KSUdesigner, on 11/05/2009, -2/+8Walmart is a business, and like any business profit is first and foremost. Nobody forces anybody to work there. If you don't like the way they compensate their employees then don't work there. If nobody signs up to work there then Walmart will change its ways. They are not doing anything illegal with the way they compensate their employees. I don't know where people got this idea that employees should be compensated a certain way. Sure it'd be nice if everybody had full benefits, but there is no requirement that an employer has to offer any benefits in the first place.
- chrisdodges, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5dugg for thinking before speaking.
- DirtPile, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5All matter is mostly nuclear material by mass, I guess.
- tgc1, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5You don't understand. If terrrrrrrrrrrrists get ahold of those signs they could build a nuke.
Nah i'm just *****' with you. This headline is b.s. - borez, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4it's in their exit signs seemingly. Probably so they glow in the dark if all the lights go out.
- Paranor01, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Actually, very accurate headline. But without knowing why, you call it misleading.
People really gotta look at more than 1 narrow view of things, sheesh. - Paranor01, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3ROFLMAO
win! - jbmcb, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3The O.E.D. says "nucular" is an appropriate pronunciation, it's good enough for me.
- Paranor01, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3@publiclurker: brilliant last line! LOL
EDIT: I am in awe of your brilliant sarcastic wit, and hope it's not just a 1-off lol - drunkirish, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Aww *****. I'm a ghoul now! I shouldn't have left the couch to make that sandwich.
- REXNFX, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Its better than the old radium laced watches. Poor girls.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radium_Girls - vondrak, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2As the article said, tritium gas dissipates quickly in well-ventilated areas. So much like a fart, just opening a window will do.
- SunCrushr, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2They probably don't like them because I don't know about you, but my keys get knocked around a lot and if the tube breaks, you've got tritium gas escaping, and in a much larger quantity than is in a watch dial. While the danger is minimal usually, especially in a well ventilated area, most people (not you of course, because you know what you're doing) are too dumb to know that if their keyfob breaks, they need to open a window or leave the room. When an unknowing idiot walks around with a tritium key fob, the danger to others around them is increased, so the NRC bans their sale in stores, but they don't fine people for owning them and they don't make much effort to stop their import. It's a compromise that ensures that most people who get them here know what they are doing, so I'm ok with it.
- strongsad, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3The correct pronunciation of some words can sometimes be unclear, or uncular.
- bubba9999, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2the keychains contain a larger amount of tritium than has been deemed permissible by the NRC. I was afraid to try to take it on a plane just in case, so I left mine home for a recent trip.
- JohnnySoftware, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Digg has finance and business sections. They have been here for years.
You can go into settings and filter them out if you do not want to see them. Some people just pare the topics down to just technology subjects, like it was originally. - srodolff, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2http://www.theexitstore.com/exit_sign_info/facts-a ...
