- monsterette, on 06/06/2008, -2/+5Well, there is no doubt that everyone can tell when you have continued to cheat....
- kelleydfp, on 06/07/2008, -7/+2whoohoo.
- debuffplx, on 06/07/2008, -13/+82Don't be a ***** pussy and use terms like "lifestyle eating habits" Harden the ***** up.
- jaydoj, on 06/07/2008, -5/+14no *****! You wanna get into shape, hit the gym, yes you have to go, yes it's an inconvenience, and no people arent going to make fun of you...this isn't gym class in High School. Like debuffpix said, if you want it bad enough, you'll work to get it. Harden the ***** up.
And if you can't guster the nerve to go, hire a trainer. Yes they help, yes they know what they're doing, and yes you will see results.- natastna2, on 06/07/2008, -1/+18You don't have to go the gym to harden up. If I bought a gym membership, there's no way i'd bother going regularly. I just don't like boring exercise. Take up a sport and join a club, find what you like doing. Don't try and force yourself to do something you hate.
- DynamiteMonkey, on 06/07/2008, -1/+8I got myself a portable media player and essentially watch a TV show or 2 while doing my cardio. Makes it pretty entertaining and takes the focus off of the physical strain. Anyone turned off by the boredom should give that a shot.
- Versh, on 06/07/2008, -2/+11One word: Books-on-Disc
Well, three words okay-- but those discs are easy to rip to a mp3 player. Many new titles feature an ensemble cast of voice actors. A warning though: jogging in place while listening to I Am America (And So Can You) , or The Areas of My Expertise will cause sporadic fits of laughter that will vex all those in your surroundings. - specialK16, on 06/07/2008, -0/+1I do bouldering which I find to be much much more interesting and fulfilling than going to the gym. Add music to that, and it's the best 3 hours of the week (twice a week).
- EvilJelloMan, on 06/07/2008, -0/+2I boulder and sport climb regularly, and have pretty much plateaued as far as weight loss. Now instead of being a weak fatass, I'm a strong fatass. I'm not much thinner, just more muscular.
However, climbing has giving me motivation to lose weight, not to improve my appearance, but to improve my climbing. Knowing a loss of five pounds would give me a lot better chance at that V5 I've been working at HP40 is great motivation to sit my fat ass on an exercise bike for an hour. - Markpdotcom, on 06/07/2008, -0/+2Now I know the whole community is going to think I'm some dirty spammer... but this site always inspires me to get off my arse and do something (I didn't even put the www's in)
crossfit.com :)
Hope it inspires someone else :) - genki831, on 06/08/2008, -0/+0Consider me inspired Markpdotcom. Thanks for sharing that. Most of those exercises look impossible but I'm sure they can be learned if taught by instructors as good as I saw on the videos.
- directive0, on 06/07/2008, -2/+4There are other options outside getting a gym membership, you could take up Biking, Skateboarding, any sport really. Although the gym may be arguably the cheapest in terms of equipment and rental fees.
- sassafras1232, on 06/07/2008, -1/+2The cheapest sport has gotta be running. All it takes is one $70 pair of shoes every couple hundred miles and a few shorts, t-shirts, and socks. And it's fun. You get to wander around and see the neighborhood.
- unreg, on 06/07/2008, -1/+3Cheaper yet. Walking. You can get almost as much a caloric loss by just taking a good brisk walk every evening.
- werries, on 06/07/2008, -1/+3biking is a nice alternative to running due to being easier on the knees. its great excercise
- TheCasablancan, on 06/07/2008, -0/+4Something else you may consider is finding someone to go to the gym with you. It's always easier to stay motivated if other people are expecting you. I've been eating less (not necessarily better), and working out with my buddy for the last 5 months and have lost about 40 lbs. It sucks sometimes, and your body will hurt, but you feel good about yourself (due to increased testosterone production, and release of endorphins post workout ), girls take more notice of you, and there is less stress on your body.
I used to get winded just going up a flight of stairs. Now, I can jog multiple miles and still have energy to burn once I'm cooled down.- jaydoj, on 06/07/2008, -1/+2nice work!

- Hobbes24, on 06/07/2008, -10/+2i just eat once a day, not because i'm dieting, just because i don't get hungry very often at all.
- itsgotyou, on 06/07/2008, -1/+7I only eat once a day because I can't afford it anymore. I'm almost at the point where I have to chose to eat now or eat tomorrow.
- sublimemm, on 06/07/2008, -1/+7save yourself 30 bucks and cancel your internet subscription. That should help a little :)
- itsgotyou, on 06/07/2008, -1/+6I do my internet here at the library. I don't have to pay for it. Thanks for the thought though.
- Iwantawii, on 06/07/2008, -0/+5How can we help?

- AriaStar, on 06/07/2008, -0/+3You need to tie it in to the story or the title or have some smart-ass remark. Otherwise you fail and will keep getting dugg down, and I will be for not relating this to the story.

- aeiou, on 06/07/2008, -3/+112The only reason this made it to the front page is that it has Sex in the title
- Erkie, on 06/07/2008, -2/+24... And WoW in the same sentence
- popfrogs, on 06/07/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I'm surprised it didn't have Amazing in the title, that's a genuine Digg article.
- cjshamrock, on 06/07/2008, -3/+1clever title
- LadyOBOF, on 06/08/2008, -1/+1You are 110% right. That is the only way this made it to the top. Sex... a 3 letter word with power.

- Feep, on 06/07/2008, -4/+40I hereby propose that the only "dieting" story allowed on Digg's front page henceforth be the upcoming discovery of a pill that, when taken, allows one to expel all extraneous fat through the anus.
- JustMatt, on 06/07/2008, -1/+11that is a terrible visual. that just sounds like an unsettling experience.
- phorty40, on 06/07/2008, -2/+2it already exists in partial form , but all it expels is an oily discharge via the anus .
its called Alli. check it out if your ever bored and want to ruin a weekend. - KingGorilla, on 06/07/2008, -3/+1what if it expels fat through a growth on one of your shoulders?

- DoodleMaster, on 06/07/2008, -2/+6Great! I'm actually really skinny (runner) and i need to gain a little more weight so if I do the exact opposite I should fatten up healthily right? Makes perfect sense to me!
- jaydoj, on 06/07/2008, -0/+6nope, you need to go about it intelligently, otherwise once (if) your metabolism slows down, you'll go soft.
Pick up any bodybuilding mag and read their diet section on building mass. Hit the gym on your days off from running, or if you run six days a week, hit it at the opposite time you run, for example if you run at 6a (you sick bastard=]), hit the gym after a snack at about 6p. Focus on mass building exercises, your definintion is probably already there. - joser916, on 06/07/2008, -1/+2yes, yes you should

- yourenotyourjob, on 06/07/2008, -0/+0Which would be the first step in changing the eating habits to which other comments referred...
- futureisours, on 06/07/2008, -2/+13all you have to do is EAT less and take a 30 minute walk every day. it takes discipline but it's not that difficult to lost most of your fat.
- mike17032, on 06/07/2008, -13/+7Walk? ***** that *****.
If you want to work out, work the ***** out. None of this power walking/yoga/palotties/or any other new age *****. Go run a wind sprints until you cant ***** breathe anymore. Or swim laps until you puke. If you dont feel like you are about to die after a work out, you did it wrong.- xtal3, on 06/07/2008, -0/+4I agree, but I'm a 20 year old guy, and I'm guessing you're something similar. It's easy for us, but futureisours is highlighting how easy it is for older, marginal people to make a difference. People are afraid of exercise because they see it as work.
- bdbr, on 06/08/2008, -0/+3If you're fat enough that a 30 minute walk every day will do the trick, then by all means do it. It probably won't get you to the point that you're not still slightly overweight, though. Hell I've been running for a year and I eat like a bird and I'm still slightly overweight...but then I'm nearly 50.
- mike17032, on 06/07/2008, -13/+7Walk? ***** that *****.

- hollyminkowski, on 06/07/2008, -1/+8I finally got under 100lbs just a couple of weeks ago.
I have been walking a lot and riding my bike a lot instead of driving.
Also I cut out all sweet snacks and sodas.
I'm 5'1" so I'm still not skinny, but I can finally get into all my clothes again :-) - lysdexia, on 06/07/2008, -2/+4Get rich instead - haven't met a women yet who gave a ***** what you look like if you're wedged up.
- kilya218, on 06/07/2008, -1/+4It's not about looking good for women, it's about being healthy and *feeling* good.
- Snoosy, on 06/07/2008, -0/+13Losing weight is not hard. If you have motivation and dedication, it's easy. Learn to eat your carbs in the morning (complex carbs only) and protein later in the day, especially after a work out. Lift weights 3 times a week, do cardio 5 times a week. I didn't even go to a gym, I spent $200 on a weight bench and some free weights and to do cardio I skip and run my stairs in my house. Count your calories and make sure your food portions are a reasonable size. Stop drinking soda and switch to water. If you're not willing to do this, you're not going to have a good body - plain and simple. This is what I did in a little over a year:
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/8607/comparison ...- mickrussom, on 06/07/2008, -11/+3Took you a year to do that? What were you lifting, food to your mouth?
- graddatadda, on 06/07/2008, -1/+2well that was kind of mean Mick...
- pixarman, on 06/08/2008, -0/+1Well anyone with a name like Mick instantly is born with a chip on their shoulder.

- LoganT, on 06/07/2008, -0/+2You don't have to go to gym. Heck I just got a treadmill and some free-weights and that's good enough for me.
- MalusMalo, on 06/07/2008, -1/+1agreed
or a run around the park will do as well :) - timothycrash01, on 06/07/2008, -0/+2Depends on the body type, and what your goal is. Interval training, progressive weight training (increasing weight with each set - or the opposite pyramid style), core training, supersets, etc. are all difficult things to do without a variety of equipment. (Dumbbells, barbells, exercise balls, leg presses, cross training, treadmills, rope weights, etc.)
If you're trying to build muscle, strength, or just cardio endurance, it's also important to continually change your routine - otherwise your body just adapts to a certain program and will eventually result in very little benefit. (I.E: If your doing the same cardio workout and using the same weights month upon month.)
Everyone's different though. Some people can run 10 minutes a day, do 20 push ups, and eat like ***** and still appear athletic, while not really being in shape at all. I personally have to work really hard at it, change my routine every 8 weeks, really watch what I eat, to get the same result.
- MalusMalo, on 06/07/2008, -1/+1agreed
- sbostedor, on 06/07/2008, -2/+2Step 11 - read more lists of obvious steps that you already know that are only posted to get eyeballs on a website filled with ads
- AkatsukiNoTobi, on 06/07/2008, -1/+415-25 grams of protein per each meal while keeping the meal under 400 calories 5 times a day? Seems like the article is suggesting to live off of protein bars.

sites dead - leec85, on 06/07/2008, -0/+2There isn't a good way right now for people to manage their health and fitness. In the past and still today people say things like eat this many calories or have this many grams of protein per meal, but how many people actually know how many calories or what amount of nutrients they are getting, let alone what is right for them? I'm developing a free web application to help people out with this, ebodyplan.com. If your going to negatively digg me for posting a link, decide to do it after you check out my work in progress. I'm trying to help people, not get your credit card.
- mickrussom, on 06/07/2008, -2/+4The are what you eat bit is misleading and wrong.
A lot of the big buff bodybuilders suffer terribly due to low fat via joint issues and tearing muscle and tendons.
Fish are loaded with fats. Cows and pigs get fat from being fed CORN which has no fat.
I personally have lost a LOT of weight and increased lean body mass and decreased LDL cholesterol and triglycerides by eating a mix of Atkins/Zone. Meat & vegetables. None of this bagels/snackwells/diet soda BS.
The western diet is so full of GARBAGE processed food, high fructose corn syrup, bleached flours and poisonous "healthy" oils such as canola and we are all getting fatter and sicker.
Did you know this trans fat crap is another "hook" to get us to use garbage waste oil. Animal lard does not have poisonous substances formed when fat frying at high temp. But these low/no trans oils give off highly toxic things when fried.
You can be skinny and sexy and all that, but at the same time out could be very, very unhealthy. Diet advice from websites with no theory or evidence.
A lot of high end athletic teams use modified Zone (Barry Sears) diets, and some of the best distance runners, the Ethiopians, have had diets which are closely guarded secrets which have been revealed to be low on the carbs.
But this cows and pigs are fat statement is simply RETARDED. You can be a fat pig on a vegetarian diet. And this would insinuate that avocado is "bad" when it contains poly and mono unsaturated fats.
Americans are laughable with the garbage processed genetically modified food everywhere and we never blame the lack of quality and the lack of natural whole organic foods for being fat. Then you get a bonehead saying pork and beef make you fat and that meat , coupled with vegetables, is some of the least processed stuff (though the cows and pigs are poisoned with antibiotics and horrific living conditions that makes them use the antibiotics, and to speed things up, growth hormones.)- skcoder, on 06/07/2008, -0/+0Yep. Americans eat junk food day in and day out and then get fat, diseased, or cancer. Then they try to push the rest of us to pay for their ***** health care when they ate fast food the last 30 years. They can have their *free* health care once they rip it from my cold, dead body.
- bipolarruledout, on 06/08/2008, -0/+0Part of health care is preventative and having good preventative care which includes lifestyle consultation has been shown to lower health care costs. Nothings says we couldn't cut people off for non-compliance. And there is no such thing a "free" health care. Last I checked most people paid taxes in the US and we still have by far the most expensive health care system in the world.
- skcoder, on 06/09/2008, -0/+0Regardless of what percentage is preventative vs non-preventative, I believe the most important preventative measure would be diet education. Maybe a year long course in diet and nutrition sometime in high school. If people decide they would still rather smoke their Marlboro's and eat their big macs, so be it. I don't want my tax dollars going into the abyss of national health care when these people will be the most taxing on the system, without a doubt.

- bipolarruledout, on 06/08/2008, -0/+0Zone I think is the most reasonable as it basicly mirrors a healthy diet that most people should eat. 90% of people are likely best off it they watch total calorie consumption along with limited fats/sugers/basic carbs, reasonable protein and some fruits and vegatables.
- genki831, on 06/08/2008, -0/+0Yeah, eat real food. Its much better for you. Mostly vegetables, fruit, nuts and unprocessed meat(not hamburger) are real foods. If you eat mostly that and don't exceed 2000 calories a day you will be fine. That's what I eat and I don't exceed 1500 calories most days.

- Sansui, on 06/07/2008, -0/+5Incoming wall of text. I find that the best way to lose weight reliably and consistently is to find out what works for your own body, not follow someone else's specific plan A few years ago I hit a high point in my weight, and I tried some different diets without much success. A version of the south beach diet actually knocked 10-20 pounds off but then I hit an immediate and unyielding plateau.
I tried a new plan, going back to basics. My basis was limited calorie intake, high protein, low fat meals, and daily aerobic exercise. Meticulous food and exercise logs, and weekly weigh ins. The weight started dropping off quick, and I think the food/exercise logs were what really kept me honest. It's amazing how easy it is to forget you ate something.
This article states that you shouldn't cheat - I actually found the opposite. By choosing one day each week to 'spike' my calorie intake to 50-70% more than normal, I began losing a LOT more weight than before. These days involved two healthy meals, with eather lunch or dinner a high calorie meal complete with dessert.
I went from losing 1-2 pounds a week with hard work, to 2-4 pounds a week by adding calories. I've heard that your metabolism quickly adapts to your calorie intake to avoid weight loss, so my theory is this random weekly spike in calories kept my metabolism guessing. Felt great losing those 65 pounds. - dstz, on 06/07/2008, -0/+3Agree with running. Cheap, fun, makes you eat a lot! only good things!
- scoot557, on 06/07/2008, -1/+5To backup what Sansui said, The "No Cheating" is complete BS and not based on anything useful. A "cheat meal" helps bring leptin levels back to normal amounts, which is extremely important for fat burning. This huge meal will also help to boost a stifled metabolism. A moderate cheat meal once or twice a week is usually enough to keep you from eating like garbage all the time, and still maintain good results and a healthy lifestyle. Whoever wrote this article has 0 credibility.
- maxer64, on 06/07/2008, -0/+3These tips are all great. I was 250, now down to 180, and some things you can do - Alot of fiber (beans, veggies, grape nuts for breakfast), diet pop only if you must drink it, no late night ice cream or other bad snacks. That and just eat less. Once you stop eating so much, you realize you never needed that much in the first place.
- mikimouse, on 06/07/2008, -3/+1Regular physical exercises will keep you in shape no matter of what you eat :)
- skcoder, on 06/07/2008, -1/+0Ah, if only this were true.

- grimward, on 06/07/2008, -0/+2Universal truths:
Eat often, it doesn't matter what you eat, it just that you have to eat it like the article says, five times a day or more.
Move more, it doesn't have to be an hour long training session per day, it just has to be 15-30 minutes of regular WALKING.
The rest of that article is BS, so I bured it. - spiritditch, on 06/07/2008, -0/+3I thought the WOW in the title meant "World of Warcraft".
... yeah, it looks like I've already blown my chances with the opposite sex. - jerbaker, on 06/07/2008, -0/+2Um ...
Rule #2: Where does the 70%/30% come from? Are you sure it's not 65%/35% or some other number? What does it mean to be 70% of what you eat? If I eat only oatmeal does that mean I will be 70% seeds?
Rule #3: No cheating, but Rule #4 says, "a free cheat meal on a Saturday night." Which is it?
Rule #7.
A) If you only eat 5 meals spaced 3 hours apart, you will go 4 hours between your last meal and bedtime. Maybe eating six meals spaced 3 hours apart would better fill 16 waking hours.
B) The amount of calories required to heat a glass of ice water to body temperature is about 2 (two) calories (you do know that food calories are actually kCal, right?). How's 2 calories going to help? You'd have to drink about 1,500 glasses of ice water to burn off a pound of fat. If you drink 8 glasses of ice water per day, you would lose about 2 pounds per YEAR due to heating the water to body temperature.
Rule #8: Don't mix fat with carbs? Does that mean we shouldn't eat salad, unsweetened granola, or nuts? What is the reason for this? Separating fat, carbs, and protein from meals is a fad diet in and of itself, which seems to violate Rule #5.
Rule #10: Isn't this Rule #8? - bipolarruledout, on 06/08/2008, -0/+0I can't be the only one who did a double take when I saw WOW and sex in the same sentence.
