*Madagascar has closed their ports* - radicaldementia, on 06/11/2009, -2/+65I work in NYC, and a bunch of my co-workers have gotten swine flu. For them, it was pretty much no different from the regular flu, they got over it in a few days. So I think for most of us it's nothing too bad to worry about. But we have to remember that the regular flu kills like 30,000 Americans every year, and that's with a vaccine in use. There is no swine flu vaccine yet, and if we don't develop one soon, outbreaks could spread very rapidly. Declaring a pandemic and putting counter-measures into high gear will probably save tens of thousands of lives.

- roguenkatz, on 06/11/2009, -3/+42What do you mean by... oh wait, I see what you did there.
- Disgod, on 06/11/2009, -1/+27"Give us 24 hours of news on the flu with tons of fancy graphics, a hologram of the virus and don't be scared to break in the middle of Dancing with the Stars with a slightly relevant update."
OH GOD NO!! I mean that in a deadly serious way. Could you imagine what would happen with the talking monkeys we call TV news journalists had to actually report on the swine flu more than 15 minutes a day? Can you imagine the idiotic scaremongering? The pop-science ***** that inevitable pops up when any sort of new disease or condition enters into general knowledge? The shear idiocy that would result would be staggering!!! Americans run around like chickens with their heads cut off over things which are literally 1 in 10 million chance of actually happening to them, AT THE BEST OF TIMES. Could you imagine the results of them half understanding the dangers of swine flu and going ape *****.
I'm not against educating people about the swine flu, but the main stream media has no ***** clue how to handle most science and is worse with health and medicine because they give equal time to the quacks and charlatans of the alternative medicines movement. The MSM needs to figure out that sometimes, especially in modern medicine/science, the truth is not somewhere in the middle when two sides are debating and to look at the EVIDENCE and say exactly what the evidence points them to, and they need to analyse the studies they report on. I guess this process is called journalism, they may have heard of it, they definitely need to do it. - inactive, on 06/12/2009, -3/+27EVERYBODY PANIC
- Hedison, on 06/11/2009, -1/+23Calm down guys. The phase 6 alert i think is more a reflection of the spread of the virus rather than severity of infection
- brainovermind, on 06/11/2009, -6/+27Though many in the US feel this isn't that bad, the US has nearly half of the confirmed cases (possibly due to better detection methods) and about 20% of the confirmed deaths worldwide. Assuming the US is the most well equipped to deal with such illness, that should be quite terrifying for less developed countries. It should be obvious that this is a problem everyone should be aware of, guarding against and helping to solve.
I find it sickening that some people feel the US shouldn't worry about this at all, considering that millions of people worldwide could die from this. Whether the majority of people are from Shanghai, China or Redneck, USA shouldn't matter. Suffering people need help.
Unfortunately, many in the US blamed the media for exaggerating this flu so this has been swept under the carpet for a couple of weeks, in fear of public disapproval. In the meantime, we learned about American Pop Idol gossip, Brangelina rumors, Obama's latest restaurant choice and what people think of Rush each night. We American's need to realize there are more important things in the world besides Hollywood gossip and allow media to blow up medical stories as much as they want.
Give us 24 hours of news on the flu with tons of fancy graphics, a hologram of the virus and don't be scared to break in the middle of Dancing with the Stars with a slightly relevant update. Hopefully, most of us on Digg now realize this is a problem even the US should deal with fully.

- twiztidsinz, on 06/12/2009, -2/+18WHO?
- ghatid, on 06/12/2009, -1/+17But the normal flu vaccine doesn't really do anything...They just choose a strain they think is going to be common and start giving it to people who think that it's going to help.
The only person I know who gets flu shots every year is my aunt who always ends up being the one who gets sick:). - razorc03, on 06/12/2009, -1/+15I'm moving to Madagascar

- keysmachine, on 06/12/2009, -4/+12They better go ahead and consider seasonal flu a pandemic also because that bitch kills over 350,000 people yearly. This has only killed a little over 140. Not to mention doctors and the CDC have realized its not as deadly and in some cases slightly worse than a cold but nothing more in some people.
- pegothejerk, on 06/12/2009, -0/+7I heard Kevin Bacon has it. We're all screwed.

o_O - baleful, on 06/12/2009, -5/+11The funny thing about this pandemic is that obesity is still going to kill more people this year than the swine flu.
- spoonard, on 06/12/2009, -3/+8So, the symptoms are IDENTICAL to that of a normal flu, a regular family doctor can't tell you that you have the swine flu only the CDC can... I call MAJOR ***** on this one.
