- kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -9/+40A great Vitamin D FAQ:
http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/id/ART02812 - TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29but it's 11:00 PM
- gabbercomau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21No we're not, we spend most of our time in offices.
Which Australia are you in? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+31Scientists are very funny to me; one day Vitamin D will prevent Cancer but wait a year and it will not only cause Cancer but it will also shrink your testicles.
- Seph7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18The perfect excuse "This isn't indecent exposure, I'm just preventing cancer!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Vitamin D is relatively safe but be careful with it. Anything taken to excess will lead to badness.
"The principal direct toxic effects of vitamin D are excessive absorption of calcium from the intestine and resorption of calcium from bone. This results in deposition of calcium and phosphorus in soft tissues all over the body, with particular damage to the heart, blood vessels and kidneys. This a fairly reliable method for inducing high blood pressure in model animals (such as dogs). This is presumably renal hypertension caused by calcification of the renal arteries. Extreme toxicities caused by the calcinogenic plants results in calcium deposition in and damage to lungs, tendons, ligaments with attendent lameness."

- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This doesn't make sense. Australians are out in the sun quite a lot and we still have a high rate of cancer.
- yomamaphat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Cool, today I simultaneously was exposed to cancer and also prevented it.
I got the ***** burned out of me, but took my Vitamin D! - TheWhiteOtter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'd just like to point out for anyone trying to up their "dose" of sunlight that for the UV B to reach you you cannot be behind glass (which absorbs it). This may seem odd since you can still get sunburnt in a car but this is caused by either UV A (some of which is not absorbed by the glass but cannot help with vitamin D according to that article) or a physical burn (not radiation burn) both of which can still cause skin cancer (I did an A-Level Physics project on this kind of thing).
- shellwe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Hey, it's the new cure for cancer digg of the week!!
Curious if there is a second one this week - museo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Since I don't live inside arctic circle or play wow 18 hours a day I think I will be fine.
- tpodr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Its just a matter of numbers:
"1500 Americans die every year from [skin cancers]. 1500 Americans die every day from the serious cancers." - kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Aww, I was hoping you were going to show us the vegetable site :)
- thruyersternum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What ever happened to vitamin B-17?! http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8257934856995183554
- jhshukla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6presence of vitamin D helps in fighting the virus directly or in an intermediate step. how dumb have you to be to ask that kind of question? btw I haven't read the article.
- brufleth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It is called "moderation." Going for a little walk and getting 15-20 minutes of sun is very different from spending 6 hours roasting until you look like a lobster.
- ishtari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ksponge:
As I said I can't vouch for the accuracy of the web pages. But no matter how tragic, that you know of 2 people that died before the age described as having a higher risk of cancer, is not proof against the assumption. - brufleth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Unfortunately it isn't the same. Vitamin D is a fickle thing. You can take supplements, drink tons of milk, etc and it still isn't as effective as getting 15 minutes of sunlight.
But if you actually read about it then you'd know that. - drlog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree! In Oz, we do have a lot of sun for sure. People still spend most of the day indoors. However, when you are walking to your car/walking to the shops etc, you will get a good dose of the sun.
Its all about the lifestyle that you choose. I personally do about 20 mins of incidental walking a day...so I get what I need. - lunasunshine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But that only applies if your serum calcium phosphate product is over 60 or 70.
- ishtari, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I believe that the cancer rate is so much higher i western countries not so much for a vitamin D deficiency (or microwaves, computer game violence or whatever is this weeks "thing you get cancer from") but just that people in western countries lives longer, hence have a higher risk of getting it.
Just googeling "life expectancy" I found this wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_expectancy (click on the pic to the right) that many developing countries has an life expectancy that is less than 50 years. And googeling "age of cancer" i found this http://www.usc.edu/hsc/info/pr/hmm/05fall/cancer.html that says: "Overall, the elderly are 10 times more likely to get cancer, and 15 times more likely to die from cancer than are people under the age of 65."
But then again I am not a doctor, and can't vouch for the accuracy of those web pages, I just found it interesting. - daleng, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Let the sun roast the cancers away!
- tpodr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does this mean there may actually be a benefit to having psoriasis?
http://www.psoriasis.org/treatment/psoriasis/topicals/dovonex.php - brian1625, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not saying this is wrong, but I'm having trouble understanding something.
Wouldn't darker skinned people in northern regions have a higher rate of cancer than their light skinned neighbors? - Twango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed with Malakin.
Read the article. 1500 UV cancers A YEAR. 1500 major cancers A DAY.
It's been known for a *long* time that your body needs sunlight to make vitamin D. Cancer rates are way lower in places where people are outdoors more. Is D a cure? Probably not. Is it important? yes.
I can understand skepticism about health claims, because they do get changed all of the time -- and one study is no better than the person doing it until it's backed up by others. - Tigrou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes Australians have a high rate of skin cancer, but maybe not as much internal cancer as Canadians. Be well worth a follow up study to compare the two, assuming the rest of the lifestyles trends hold steady. Then again, Australia is even more diligent in the "slip, slap and slurp" of protecting yourself when being out in the sun. Heck did you guys invent that?
- robharper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh those crazy scientists!
- Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@lovingdigg
Scientists have known that vitamin D prevents cancer for a long time. Many people on digg assume that just because the mass media are finally talking about it that it must be a new discovery. This is yet another study backing up what's been known for a long time. It tends to take decades to reverse common fallacies perpetuated by the mass media such as moderate sun exposure being bad for you.
One of the earlier studies I'm aware of was done back in 1916 which showed incidences of cancer increasing as people lived further away from the equator. Back then they wouldn't of known it was from vitamin D deficiency, but we've obviously since figured it out. - Brss45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i have read about this. a lot, actually. more than one article that happened to be on digg.
and if you do the math, based on total exposed skin surface and the rate of vitamin D production, you just can't get enough soley from sunlight, especially from 15 minutes.
however, i will say that most americans could use those 15 minutes, and i'd hope with out sun screen, but that's just me. so in that respect, yeah, go out side. (this is ironic, because theoretically, sun bathers shouldn't be getting as much cancer as they do, so who even knows.)
the western diet is far from perfect. it is very difficult to sythetically manufacture in a lab what appears in nature. that, and it's just easier to eat things in as un-altered states as possible. - RHSterling, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I live in an area where we get only 58 sunny days a year. We have a hight rate of vitamin D deficiency and one of the highest rates of cancer in the state.
- ksponge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@xnihil0zer0 (#6411214)
I think spontaneous generation was disproved by now. Well maybe not in bible thumper states, but come on man. - XNihil0Zer0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2whoooosh, thats the sound it makes when it flies over your head.
- malliemcg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Tigrou
Our variant used to be slip, slop, slap - (to cheesy ad music) slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat, in the sun this summers day, slip! slop! slap!
Recently it was padded to slip, slop, slap and wrap - shirt, sunscreen, hat and sunnies.

I am most interested in seeing the differences wrt to internal cancers between Canadians and Australians - perhaps we'll see Aussies wandering about shirtless for 20 minutes a day to get our vitamin D :P
M - succubuskiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A rock lobster.
- ksponge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@trevor2 (#6413469)
this isn't logical. - Tigrou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I read about this on here first http://www.gaining-mass.com/vitamin-d-vs-calcium-some-controversial-advice-n68.htm, before on digg. Some interesting points
"I just encountered more compelling evidence of the power of Vitamin D. People used to think this compound did not matter much - it stopped rickets but that is about it.
What I am finding amazing is the power of Vitamin D. A recent study with 1200 women shows a SIXTY PER CENT DROP IN CANCER.
Ok, numbers, numbers, numbers right. No!
That's TWICE the effect of smoking vs. non-smoking!
Vitamin D gets made by sun exposure and gets 'gummed up' in your system if you overdo calcium. So if you are in a colder climate, don't take MORE calcium than you need but DO supplement with Vitamin D.
There are strong links to elevated calcium and increases in late-life cancer, most strikingly the link to prostate cancer is huge. And men are getting it younger and younger. People under 40 are getting it.
Why? Well less direct sunlight in colder climates and for those who work indoors plus an overabundance of calcium in the diet means what you DO get is unravalled. You have a limited ability to produce Vitamin D and surprise, surprise this ability decreases as you age.
So the constant 'advice' to 'keep taking calcium' has a downside. You're messing up your ability to fight cancer.
Women need additional calcium as they age it seems. But there is a limit to all things. Too much is TOO MUCH.
As for men...I don't think extra calcium should be an option.
It's your body...think about it." - mbarnes32, on 10/07/2009, -0/+0Here is a good site for info on vitamin D= www.vitaminD3world.com
The site has great summaries of the data that led to the Canadian Cancer Society recommending that everyone take vitamin D to prevent cancer.
The site also recently launced a new micro tablet version of vitamin D that is quite tiny and can be allowed to break up in the mouth or under the tongue and it is very reasonable. They also have an offer to supply free vitamin D to children - justice4world, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6the sun is the giver and maintainer of all life - without it there would be none.
so vitamin D as necessary for health and vitality makes perfect sense and the fear of sunlight that has been instilled into the minds of the masses by authorities does not - in fact, it almost seems criminal.
http://www.vitamindcouncil.com has a lot of info on vitamin D for those interested.
their monthly newsletter is very informative - which is available through email subscription or RSS syndication. - lomour1, on 12/23/2007, -0/+0http://www.diet-article.com
- tedhutchinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0African-Caribbean men, particularly Jamaican men, have the highest rate of prostate cancer in the world.
Black women are at increased risk for breast cancer mortality.
Analysis of the National Cancer Institute's Black/White Cancer Survival Study found that black men and women with colorectal cancer had a 50 percent greater probability of dying of colon cancer than did white men and women.
There is a similar pattern for lung cancer.
Season of diagnosis and treatment (associated with higher vitamin d status) is linked to increased survival so adds to the Vitamin D cancer story.
There is a lot of outdated information on vitamin d toxicity circulating worth reading "Risk Assessment for Vitamin d3" to get an up to date assessment of it's safety. - emerge1, on 09/04/2008, -0/+0Cancer Fighting Vitamin D News and Information.

My mother died at 54 from cancer. My neighbor across the street had cancer also at around age 42. I'd say your assumption is wrong. - shoota, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3forget it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@brss45,
It's not "similar". It's "same". It's pretty easy to verify this when you're dealing with small molecules such as Vitamin D. Yes, it's extremely important, but no, it doesn't matter if you get it through fortified milk, from fish, or from sun exposure. It's all the same to your cells. - Trevor2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Your skin puts out oils that help you get vitamin D from sunlight. Water washes it off some, but when you use soap + water you basically get rid off all of it. So when you take that shower in the morning your ability to get D from the sun literally goes down the drain.
It could take some days to get enough back to be effective but since your washing it off every day you'll never have enough. I think it would also be safe to say that the oils your skin puts out also help protect against sunburns because it absorbs the UV before it hits your actual skin so that would help protect against burns/cancer. I'm sure salt water effects it too because when I'm at the beach the sunburns come after/while I'm in the water.
So if everyone would just stop washing their body they will be ok. You would also save on the water bill, so your killing two birds with one stone.
Just use plenty of deodorant. :P - Brss45, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3actually, you'd have to be outside, fully naked in direct sunlight for some 10+ hours daily to get enought vitamin D.
and milk is naturally full of it, however the pasteurization process destroys it, and then they "enrich" it with a synthetic version which (, just like synthetic vitamin E) is not as readily absorbed or utilized.
humans have evolved getting their vitamins/ general food stuffs from certain places for years. we have adapted to these sources. and we are expected to just utilize a *similar* molecule built up in a lab? puh-lease.
that's why you should try and get a natural supplement, or if you life in california, drink raw milk. (freakin' ohio. even after we legalize marijuana, i still can't drink the milk that i want. god, what a world.) -
