- resident13, on 08/05/2008, -4/+24I don't understand how some things come to light as being a new revelation in medicine when they are obvious to people who know a fair amount about pathology. Like the link between HPV (human papilloma virus) and cervical cancer. I thought that was widely known for years ( I've known since I was 16) just from reading basic information on sexual pathology and cancer etc. How long will it be before they openly tell the public that viruses are linked to lung cancer etc??? Vitamin C taken intravenously can also prevent death from occurring from infection with the bird flu. I guess I am just a hopeless medical information vampire, reading everything I can find as a hobby. Man! I am in the wrong field! Glad to see this article out there though!!!! It's 'bout time! Diggy digg!
- michaelpinto, on 08/06/2008, -1/+19Linus Pauling deserves the credit for this finding (he did the research years ago): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linus_Pauling
- peaceninja, on 08/06/2008, -0/+11why dont we start discussing vitamin C as a treatment for scurvy
- thegrantman, on 08/06/2008, -0/+11Great.Now I have to go to Canada to get affordable Vitamin C.
- buddyw, on 08/06/2008, -0/+9The problem is that annicdotal evidence is almost useless in medicine mostly because of the placebo effect. This leads to a lot of 'cures' that are just feel good remedies that do nothing.
Double blind trials and studies like this (when reproduced by other people) help us to know if a remedy truly works. - sfacets, on 08/06/2008, -1/+8This is hardly new. This was even featured in Dr House.
- acis1, on 08/06/2008, -2/+8lets get this on digg 5 more times k?
- BoneheadFarker, on 08/06/2008, -4/+9Please...don't put the word "doctor" next to "holistic/homeopathic". These people are not real doctors...

- austinisi, on 08/06/2008, -1/+5By now (judging by the posts on Digg), all cancer has been cured 50 times over.
- PaxImperium, on 08/06/2008, -0/+4Do you have any evidence to back up your claim that is contradicted by most of modern medicine since the Vit C used in this study acts by causing apoptotic death of the cancer cells, not act as a nutrient?
BTW: making claims without evidence that is later proven true, does not make you right, just lucky. - PaxImperium, on 08/06/2008, -2/+6What garbage. These "doctors" were not the ones who discovered this but actual doctors who are scientists and frankly, you didn't read the article did you?
The amount of Vitamin C needed is way beyond what any human could possibly consume and multiple studies have shown that high dietary Vitamin C does nothing to prevent the flu, cancer and other diseases. This is IV Vitamin C. - Niocan, on 08/06/2008, -1/+5"...which has previously been thought of as a nutrient, not a drug"
Unless of course, cancer itself is a nutrient deficiency... which it is. Eat those Apricot seeds : ) - wsansewjs, on 08/06/2008, -4/+7HAHA. This has been done in the past 25 years at least. Look it up "Gerson Therapy" It is already been proven and tested. IT IS WHAT YOU EAT TODAY IS WHAT YOU GET IN FORM OF CANCER. Our bodies lack the nutrients we need therefore we develop cancers and diseases. It goes all the way back to the plants and the farmers of what they put in the soil. Think about it. It does make sense.
- OneEyedParrot, on 08/06/2008, -2/+5For some reason, the first Vitamin C I thought of was the singer...
- PaxImperium, on 08/06/2008, -1/+3It is going to a study that can be used to cure cancer?
It is going to a study that has never been done before?
Leave the science to the scientists. - BXRWXR, on 08/06/2008, -2/+4Well good for you, Doogie.
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2 Vitamin C, tastes good to me.
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Love me some Vitamin C.
- vbullinger, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Huggr is very right - cancer is a disease where you lack something. Sure, bad diet and smoking, etc., hurts you, but if you didn't have this vitamin deficiency, it won't matter (cancer-wise).
I have not studied vitamin C at all, with regards to cancer, but I have studied vitamin B17.
Watch this documentary about vitamin B17 and cancer: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4312930190 ... - resident13, on 08/06/2008, -1/+3Well said. "He did the research years ago." Sad to think about the lag time between the research and the public disclosure. Sad. You really can't depend on media to keep us informed. Those that want to remain informed must hunt down information on their own and even then it is a constant struggle.
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2You're half right. Gerson therapy appears to work well, and yes it's basic premises have been shown to be true. But your assertion "Our bodies lack the nutrients we need therefore we develop cancers and diseases" makes little sense, and is in no way implied by the effectiveness of Gerson therapy.
- Huggr, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2So cancer = modern day scurvy?
- goblindegook, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2http://digg.com/search?s=cancer+%22vitamin+c%22&su ...
- Ellipsys, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Okay. I'm an advocate of organic food, but lets be honest here. People were dying long before prepackaged garbage was available. Modern medicine and science has its place, and its contributions are important ones. Even in this very story, the sheer amount of vitamin C is way beyond anything food could give you - literally. The reason it has to be taken IV, is that at a certain point massive PO doses of vitamin C will not be absorbed, and instead just give you a massive dose of diarrhea. You're definitely right that eating well is better for your body, but it is not a miracle catch all cure.
- BoneheadFarker, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2@mnky9800n
Homeopathic "medicine": Take a substance that produces similar symptoms as a disease when ingested, dilute it in water until the water contains no trace of that substance anymore, and this water will cure the disease.
Honestly, does this seem scientific to you? - ubuwalker31, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2Ugh, not more of this vitamin C curing cancer B.S. -- its not true, and it hasn't been proven:

http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2006/04/by_seed_ ... - jamie191817, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1They better not outlaw it, i need that stuff else my skin goes manky.
- jasoninoakland, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2Vitamin C? Pshaw. All you need just a few drops of blood from a human-cylon fetus. Works like a charm.
- ChesapeakeBaybe, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Actually, a lot of homeopaths are doctors. Take my favorites: Dr. Weil, Dr. Oz, Dr. Mercola, the first two being renowned MD's that advocate a combination of traditional medicine and holistic approaches, and the latter being chiefly holistic.
Most doctors are not actual researchers, but scrutinize the research that is out there. I like holistic doctors because they are not linked to drug companies thus do not feel the need to hock suspect medication.
That said, Weil, Oz and Mercola agree that all of us (especially those with family histories of cancer) should follow an anti-inflammatory diet with lots of fruits and veggies and adequate intake of vitamins A, C, D -- whenever possible getting your D intake from the sun. People with risk for cancer should also look into the anti-cancer diet. - dagnome1984, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1They found the mechanism.
"The conventional wisdom of how antioxidants such as vitamin C help prevent cancer growth is that they grab up volatile oxygen free radical molecules and prevent the damage they are known to do to our delicate DNA. The Hopkins study, led by Chi Dang, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine and oncology and Johns Hopkins Family Professor in Oncology Research, unexpectedly found that the antioxidants' actual role may be to destabilize a tumor's ability to grow under oxygen-starved conditions. Their work is detailed this week in Cancer Cell."
""When a cell lacks oxygen, HIF-1 helps it compensate," explains Dang. "HIF-1 helps an oxygen-starved cell convert sugar to energy without using oxygen and also initiates the construction of new blood vessels to bring in a fresh oxygen supply."
Some rapidly growing tumors consume enough energy to easily suck out the available oxygen in their vicinity, making HIF-1 absolutely critical for their continued survival. But HIF-1 can only operate if it has a supply of free radicals. Antioxidants remove these free radicals and stop HIF-1, and the tumor, in its tracks. "

- Neiby, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Precisely. And anyone who has followed the research knows this already. It's sad that it's taken so long for the mainstream to catch up.
- muzocan, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1We already know that. Anything else?
- mnky9800n, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Isn't it just House?
- goblindegook, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2Who cares? This cancer/vitamin C story has already been frontpaged more times than I can remember. (Fortunately, digg also announced the cure for Alzheimer's on 250 different occasions this year alone.)
- NorthMass, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1I thought they outlawed it in Europe and are trying to in Canada? I am glad I was wrong. Sigh, everyone from Bill O'Reilly to Alex Jones practices extreme sensationalism. Bill-O tries to sensationalize things to draw you to his agenda, and Alex Jones does the same. Can someone give me someone to listen to that doesn't sensationalize?
- floejoe, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Good pseudoscience debunking:
http://www.skepdic.com/vitacon.html - FredFredrickson, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2Interesting news, especially since, last I heard, taking too many vitamins could actually increase your chances of getting cancer.
- floejoe, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Fuji or Golden Delicious?
- frankendigg, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2Research in mice is a long way away from research in humans.
- floejoe, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Pauling, as most people know, became an advocate of massive daily doses (10,000 mg) of vitamin C. Because he was a two-time Nobel laureate and one of the greatest scientific minds of the 20th century, Pauling attracted many followers who worship at the vitamin C altar.
What many people either don't know or choose to ignore is that many scientists believe that the studies he based his belief on were flawed. "The Mayo Clinic conducted three double-blind studies involving a total of 367 patients with advanced cancer. The studies, reported in 1979, 1983, and 1985, found that patients given 10,000 mg of vitamin C daily did no better than those given a placebo. Moreover, high doses of vitamin C can have significant adverse effects. High oral doses can cause diarrhea. High intravenous [IV] dosage has been reported to cause kidney failure due to clogging of the kidney tubules by oxalate crystals" (Barrett: 2000).
The defenders of vitamin C point out that the Mayo studies didn't introduce vitamin C intravenously, which is necessary, they say, for it to be toxic to cancer cells.
http://www.skepdic.com/rath.html - RetardoCrisp, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2Man, Pauling has been saying and proved this in the 60's and since then Vit C seems to be some ebb and flow fad...it only took over 40 years for people to wake up. =( Pauling tested large doses on people with surprising results.
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Naturally occuring vitamin C in small regular doses is good for you. Taking vitamin pills can do just as much harm as good.
All of my original comments are here: http://digg.com/health/Vitamin_C_slows_cancer_grow ... - VigRoco, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1I thought she quit performing years ago after that "Graduation" song...

- floejoe, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1I'm sorry I don't resort to name-calling, but you are ***** dumb.
- dagnome1984, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Well it can. Body chemistry is not as simple to say a chemical is good or bad as an absolute. It depends on the situation. Vitiamin C can have its draw backs in people who have a stroke or a heart attack given that it helps to disable a protein that gives up oxygen when the cells oxygen supply is short. On the other hand that can be beneficial in treating tumors because tumors out strip their oxygen supply due to their unchecked growth.
