The only thing "teen" about this is that the girl is a teen (and obviously teens text more than older people). *Anybody* can get this, and it more suitably falls under what *real* doctors call Repetitive Strain Injury.
Just as the whole carpal tunnel syndrome malarkey that came up in the late 90's, this happens to *anyone* performing *any* repetitive task using the same muscles over a long period of time.
Years ago, I got into playing my Xbox for such long periods that I got "gaming teen tendinitis" of my thumbs, as well. Numbness, tingling, etc. Guess what? I wasn't surprised when I got it, I knew why I got it, and it stops when you stop.
What sensationalist, made-up *****. Buried for obvious reasons. - keenkumar, on 07/19/2009, -1/+18Thats nothing! I hear this one girl fell into a manhole because of texting!..
- vsujohn2, on 07/18/2009, -2/+13I've heard this argument a lot but people need to realize texting fulfills a different need. Talking to someone requires being in a place where you won't disturb someone and where someone can't or won't overhear what you're saying. It also requires a time commitment. You wouldn't call up a friend to say "did you hear about michael jackson?" Thats what texts are for, short snippets of info that would be stupid or too short to talk about on the phone. People do still talk on the phone, but texts fill in the void when they aren't talking.
- LemonMachete, on 07/19/2009, -1/+9So you're a dick.
- mtnboy, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6Both Points understood. The idea is not suggesting to stop texting at all costs. Its just saying to limit and watch how often are you texting. To have a short conversation its good, but a lot of teens are having full conversations like they would on an Instant messenger via chat. Nonetheless its a problem that needs to be addressed.
- theman8631, on 07/18/2009, -2/+7Finally a disease I can get behind
- DRT23, on 07/18/2009, -2/+7Texting is making the people at my campus less social.
Walk through any hall, more than half have their heads down looking at their lit screen, whether sitting or walking blindly. - eliot2000, on 07/19/2009, -0/+5This is going to be a huge epidemic. Like "sexting" and those kids who were hooking at the mall, and "special K" and when kids sniff the urine of a cat to get high.
- papashawn, on 07/19/2009, -0/+4emailing too much would give you the same problem.
- nicksilvestri, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3Why is "Teen" in the title?
Can't it just be Texting Tendinitis? - Subduction, on 07/19/2009, -1/+4Tendinitis is not a disease, it is a condition.
It cannot spread, its incidence rate can rise.
But I know, talk like that will never get me to the front page of Digg, so:
BOO! YOU'RE ALL GOING TO DIE! - Jamaicaman90, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3Why is it a problem? Personally it just means I'm keeping in touch with people I otherwise wouldn't.
- MasterMynd, on 07/19/2009, -1/+4this doesn't qualify as a disease.
- brdrk, on 07/18/2009, -8/+11Let's please get back to actual voice conversations.
- Ikulus, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3Reminds me of the Nintendinitis scare in the 80s.

Just more crap for uninformed parents to excited about. - Spinducky08, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3So I take it that arthritus will be setting in right around in their 30's?
- lisaawesome, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3I started getting RSI badly when I was a dishwasher at a restaurant. Maybe we need to call this twenty something trying to pay for school by washing dishes syndrome.
- LukeBeaumont, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3Wow, what a hardass. Bet you'd never do it.
- brdrk, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2Well I don't mean to stop texting all together. I just have friends and such who will non-stop text with other people WHILE being with a group. It just seems to be overkill. I'm young, I text, but i don't let it take over my time for real human interaction.
- SummerofGeorge, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2irrelevant videos ftl
- megaton, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2lisaawesome, you have captured my heart.
- lisaawesome, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2How in the world did I do that?
- mm63, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2Um, doc, I was wondering if posting comments on digg could cause me the same thing?
- joshmoney, on 07/19/2009, -1/+3They're just being social with people who are not in their immediate vicinity. Like it or hate it, with the way the world is increasingly becoming so connected digitally, the idea that you have to be be in the physical presence of someone in order to be "social" is slowly fading...
- everlast88, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Well I support this more than I'll ever support TBA.
- megaton, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1FWIW, you are partially wrong.
It is not the same as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (agreed), but it *is* the same as Repetitive Strain Injury. (That's the whole definition: injury caused by repetitive strain.)
But dugg because you're right about everything else. - inactive, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1More like idiotic parents of whiny children syndrome.
"You mean to tell me darling child that your hands hurt from playing video games and typing on your phone all day?"
Well I guess its about time to get a ***** job huh? - DoctorX, on 07/19/2009, -1/+2Tendinitis of the thumb is a painful condition called DeQuervains Tendinitis, and is not the same as Repetitivie Strain Injury or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I learned this first-hand from my doctor, having just recovered from a nasty case brought on by too much computer use (gotta pay those bills).
She shot my wrist full of lydocaine and cortiocosteriods and made me wear a pretty bad-ass looking brace on it for two weeks.
It's perfectly fine now, and I can lift a dinner plate again.
That said, this article is aimed at the same people who believed that ***** about teens having their thumbs surgically whittled down to make texting easier. - oxymoron69, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1My nintendo thumb never actually cleared up... both of my thumbs have been most seriously calloused since 1989. Before that it was horrible, horrible blisters.
The D-pad on the NES controllers was ***** murder on my preteen thumbs. - Subduction, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1A) I used it properly, so I don't know what the ***** you're talking about.
B) When people use it improperly it's much more often a typo, and not because they don't know the difference. So you linking to condescending little grammar lectures just makes you a pedantic prick.
Douchebag.
- Spinducky08, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1I've had the cordozone shots in both wrists and if I had a choice of taking THAT pain again or having a root canal - I'm making a dental appointment!!!!
- analogkid01, on 07/19/2009, -1/+2Here's the question, though - when they're physically with the people they're texting, are they still texting other people who aren't there?
- thinkerroad, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1In other news, the rate of masturbation in male cellphone bearing teens has just decreased from an all-time high.
- imikedaman, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Gah, went back and read my comment and realized I called it a written article. I meant video. Not sure what I was thinking.
The point still stands, though. Each time someone grows up doing one of the following, they'll inevitably look down on younger people for doing the next thing in the list:
1) talking on the porch -> talking on the phone -> text messaging
2) talking in person -> penning letters -> typing an email -> text messaging (or IM, or Facebook)
3) reading a book -> watching TV -> playing video games
4) walking into a pizzeria -> calling and having it delivered -> ordering online or text messaging
The way you grew up was pure and right, and the next one in the list will lead to the complete breakdown of society. Kids these days can't handle themselves, but kids when you were young were totally okay. - megaton, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Because, your words are magic. Please, contact me: daniel@maydayonmars.com
Deleting this comment in 120 minutes... - brdrk, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1It's actually cheaper for me to text than to use my minutes. Going over on my minutes can be very pricey but unlimited texting for the whole family is less than $5 per person. Unlimited minutes on the other hand is an arm an a leg.
- jerstud56, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Yup...I'm sure this will be in the news a week or so from now. The radio news and TV news always seem to be way behind internet news. Newspaper is too I suppose. LOOK! News from yesterday!! =\
- DoctorX, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Heh, the added bonus is watching your wrist swell up like a water balloon being filled before your eyes. The lydocaine really helps, though. It felt better in no time.
- analogkid01, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Arthritis, eh? "Get OUUUUUUT of here, ghost!"
- inactive, on 07/19/2009, -1/+1My phone has email so aside from the free part what exactly is the point?
- DoctorX, on 07/19/2009, -1/+1My mistake, you're correct.
- mariowario, on 07/19/2009, -1/+1Yes we can.
- dustinbolton, on 07/19/2009, -1/+1it is incidence rate can rise?
http://www.stormloader.com/garyes/its.html - imikedaman, on 07/19/2009, -3/+3Oh boy, a sensationalist article written for old people who need to look down on the youngins for something. Fear this new craze; back in your day people did things the right way by talking on the phone. Those old people complaining about the lack of a proper porch on your house were just senile.
- inactive, on 07/18/2009, -5/+4Good. Serves 'em right.
- inactive, on 07/19/2009, -2/+1old people usually are stupid to know how to text
