- LonelyTylenoL, on 04/16/2009, -3/+20Vaccines are nice, but bacteria evolve so quickly into new strain, it will become useless in time.
This is an interesting development that may be a useful alternative to vaccines, just by stopping bacteria from communicating.

- ricker2005, on 04/16/2009, -2/+9Vaccines are not specifically for viruses. I'm not sure where you got that idea. In a vaccine, the patient is injected with an antigen that represents a part of the disease-causing organism. This causes an immune response so that the immune system is able to quickly fight off a real infection. The method works for viruses and bacteria.
There are already vaccines for the bubonic plague, cholera and TB...all of which are caused by bacteria. As a result, I have buried you for gross inaccuracy. - MoeWasHere, on 04/16/2009, -2/+8This is historic...
- anonymousmedic, on 04/16/2009, -0/+6Wrong. Vaccines for bacteria take the form of dead or inactive bacteria that produce memory antibodies unique to the glycoproteins on Bacterial capsules.

If you still don't get it:
"A U.S. researcher has developed a working vaccine for a strain of E. coli that kills 2 million to 3 million children anally in the developing world." - drdr1ft, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4It works.
- bob38443, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4And they say Muslims never contribute to our world. Go Mahdi!
- rharris, on 04/16/2009, -1/+5The HPV vaccine does prevent some forms of cervical cancer. In this case, the cancer is caused by a virus, thus the vaccine works.
Vaccines also don't have to target viruses, although in most cases, they do. In this instance, the vaccine is building the body's immunity to the toxin the E. coli bacteria produces. This allows your immune system to recognize and destroy the toxin before it can cause any damage. - mongrel, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4Hooray now they can die slowly from starvation and mob warfare!
- BeefPopsicle, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3yay this is great news, now we can further overpopulate areas without the resources available to sustain it's population
- xartion, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3there's always one jackass who has to ruin a joke

- inactive, on 04/16/2009, -1/+4All humans, whatever their religion, have something to offer the world.
Except for those bloody worshippers of Attis. ***** those smurf-hat wearing *****. - Devine122, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3I misread "annually" in the title. It makes more sense the way I read it.
- manlyandy, on 04/16/2009, -1/+4Maybe they won't feel the need to have more children if there is a greater chance their kids won't die within the first 5 years of their life..
- miket, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3did anyone else read that and think he is cooking children?
- rharris, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3It's one of those things that has a better chance to kill you if your young, old, or already sick. If you're a healthy adult, you'll get pretty sick, but you'll likely recover.
Same thing with the flu. Healthy adults will get sick, but usually recover. The young, old, or already sick have a better chance of being done in by the illness. - bob38443, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3true, hopefully the islamaphobes will realize that all humans, despite religion, have something to offer the world.
- Namco, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3I'm making a note here, huge success.
- gordigor, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3Science. ***** Yeah!
- rharris, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3That's salmonella. I've had it. There are only a select handful of people in the world I'd wish it on.
- rharris, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2I almost missed the "/s" and was about to digg you down.
- i3enner, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2Now our planet is going to be even more populated?!?!??!?!!? loljk.......not really.
- steelclash84, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2After reading TFA, there hasn't even been clinical trials yet. While this may be promising, we have no idea of the long-term effects of having the body's immune system fight E. Coli that naturally exists in the body as a digestive agent. One could speculate that a potential problem would be manufacturing an auto-immune with the digestion process in the intestines.
However, assuming it works, I could see him getting a Nobel for this. - Sesheron, on 04/16/2009, -1/+3Finally, I get to eat chicken raw like man was meant to.....::sarcasm::
- N256, on 04/16/2009, -1/+3Now there will be absolutely no reason to cook cookie dough.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2The way god meant for dead cow to be eaten! Just walk it around the campfire/kitchen once and slap it on a plate. XD
- inactive, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2So E Coli doesn't kill any adults?
- inactive, on 04/16/2009, -1/+3LOL

Well it's good that they've been restricted from Murder, Pillage and Rape.
Buried as reeking of passion rather than rational thought, based on the fact that the above poster got so caught up on saying something interesting that he got lost in his own semantics. And buried for the above poster thinking so highly of himself to represent all of free humanity. - maxlightz, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1i was going to say now they can grow up and die from aids ...
- jejeje666, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1Oh, how nice of you to be so mindful of the poor countries as to regret the development of new vaccines.
You got me thinking. Since:
- The human race is starting to go beyond sustainability in terms of resource consumption
- The United States is the country where people spend the most resources; it has been said that we would need five planets like this one in order to enable everyone to consume as many resources as an average US citizen.
Therefore:
- Let's hope they complete the development of this vaccine and save those 2-3 million poor kids. We can just make up for it by letting 2-3 million kids die in the US (by not providing babies with health care, for example) and mankind may just get back to sustainable levels within a few generations.
How does that sound? - rharris, on 04/16/2009, -1/+2src04c: If you reread my post, I said "prevent" and "some forms". I don't know where you're getting that I claimed it would cure cancer.
Also, it's assumed with _any_ vaccine that it's never 100% effective. I didn't think I had to state the obvious. -
