- wonderchemist, on 09/06/2008, -0/+11Why is it counter intuitive? The more bikes there are, the more drivers learn to anticipate the behavior of bikes. Just like in places where there are more pedestrians there are few car-pedestrian collisions.
- magic6435, on 09/06/2008, -0/+11Who are the people whom this seemed counterintuitive to and why are they allowed to function on this planet without the aid of helper monkeys and protective gear?
In other words. NO *****!
.. now that i think about it i would like a helper monkey. - Rikkochet, on 09/06/2008, -0/+8Does it make you sad knowing you're not even a GOOD troll?
- OfNumbers, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7This did not come as a surprise to me.
- hiPpymIck, on 09/05/2008, -1/+7more cyclists
(via motorists being more aware)
leads to lower rate of cycling accidents
i think that was worth finding out especially as
more and more accidents are reported
ppl wouldnt realize its getting safer
disclosure - im a urban cyclist - who uses as many back routes/parks/canals etc as possible - demonicaardvark, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5wheres the murderous anti-bicyle motorists for this one?
- kaelyiesta, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4Agreed. More bikes, more attention paid to bikers from non bikers and less inclination to marginalize bikers sharing the road.
Think critical mass. When vehiclists(sp?) and police aren't actively trying to attack them that is... - V1ncent, on 09/06/2008, -1/+5It just takes one guy who hates cyclists during a cycle marathon to disprove those stats. *voom* thump! thump! *vooom* thump!thump!thump! ching! ching! thump!
- wipis, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4Very true. I bike around my little town all the time. As more and more people cycle for fitness and become more aware of the number of bikes they become safer drivers. So less cars cut me off or pass to close to me.
- hoist0that0rag, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3biking is big in DC. i think they've passed the point of "more is better" when you actually have hipsters dying in bike on bike collisions on the trails.
i'll stay in my rolling cage of steel and airbags and air conditioning, thankyouberrymuch. - Bahamut240, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3I am a urban cyclist and oh, I hate so much when other cyclist ride down the opposite lane. It almost always means they are coming straight at me and I end up in a game of chicken with them.
- ReptileKing234, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2it's all about awareness
- chubbybubba, on 09/06/2008, -3/+5more bicyclists = more spandex
It should be illegal for men to wear spandex.(unless you're a superhero) - hoist0that0rag, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2you've a point on the hipster thing.
on air conditioning, however, i'd beg to differ. - Khast, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Bicycling makes the accident rate go down? I would say less people driving cars, means less people in car accidents. However, driving a 50cc scooter, and a bicycle...I can't even count on my hands how many times I had to ride into the ditch because some ***** in a Hummer, talking on a cell phone....didn't even see me. (And that is just the Hummers.....) One of these was 2 weeks ago.
I've actually been hit riding the scooter STANDING STILL AT A ***** STOP SIGN (head on, to boot) - Zeusandhera, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Here's a commercial to look out for cyclists, it's an "Awareness test".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahg6qcgoay4 - john570, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2OK can I take this moment to rant. OK I will. Bicyclists tend to suck. They ignore stop signs and traffic lights. They travel in packs and think they own the road. I say get em of the road period.
- BlueStreak69, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Yeah. Try biking in LA.
- Richandler, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Yeah well most people commute a lot longer than reasonable on a bike.
- DeFex, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2its called "cycling" is it too complcated to figure out that the name of the vehicle is not in the name of the activity?
kind of like driving a car is not called "caring" - 1hrSleep, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Nice assumptions... Ass. I couldn't care less about the environmental reasons for cycling. I just don't want to pay for insurance, gas, and a car while I go to school (textbooks are expensive enough).
Fortunately, my main route has bike lanes. Everywhere else I'm on the road with everyone else. Gravel shoulder? Like hell, I'm taking the lane. Although I'd prefer to ride on the shoulder if there's no bike lane, sometimes there isn't a shoulder and sometimes it's not paved. Gravel + high pressure tires = Wipe out. You're going to have to go around me since I have just as much right to the road as you do in your car (yes, the law is on my side even though you might be a minute later getting to wherever you were going for it). I signal, I shoulder check, watch my mirror, and I follow the traffic lights. - 1hrSleep, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Those are hipsters, not cyclists. They'd get into person on person collisions walking.
On air conditioning: Even at a relaxed pace, the wind is all the air conditioning I need on my bike. =P - restlessdesign, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2Pickle Surprise?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzOpjBOzMqA - mesasone, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1I think it's equally important for cyclists, new and old, to learn how to properly ride in the road and be safe, predictable riders. It's some what frustrating to see other cyclists riding in the shoulders against traffic and bombing down sidewalks.
- DeFex, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1its quite easy to have comfortable bike clothes without spandex
- SSXDRN, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Do you live in an urban area? Because I do and it surely did not come as a surprise to me either!
- DeFex, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1oh really! 15-50 pounds + human hitting someone is safer and easier to control than a giant metal and glass box with a masive engine machine inside. who would ever have guessed!?
- idontlikeyou2, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Ohhhh, why the hate ?
- Alex2, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1The guys at bicycling magazine,
www.bicycling.com , would disagree. - cufford, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2Another example of corrupt government bailing out their big money private investors. Too many powerful people invested in these systems, were losing money - thanks in large part to the traitorous economic policies that have hereto made them wealthier at the expense of the common people - so their friends in high places will of course use tax money from the little guys to pay them instead.
So what else is new? - raptor87, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Why would More bicyclists means fewer accidents? You would think less people driving mean fewer accidents not the rise of people riding bikes.
- m0llusk, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Showing conclusively that laws and bike paths do not improve safety is huge. Much money and political capital has been locked up pushing those two things.
- edebolt, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2I think this is the same group that concluded that not wearing a helmet means a bicyclist is less likely to have an accident. I ride everyday but this is a yawner of a story. Time to catch some ZZZZZZ's
- Tsasso, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1No *****
- toejamz, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1There's an average high over 90 degrees 4 months of the year where I live. In July, the AVERAGE high is just a few degrees shy of 100.
Oh, and humidity is high because this is irrigated farm country!
Biking is great, I jog an average of 10-20 miles a week (or its equivalent on a bike) but there's still lots to be said for air conditioning! - jcani, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1...with no handlebars
- 1hrSleep, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2If only, Mesasone. Critical mass is for hipster goobs who don't know what the frak they're doing with their actions. Ignoring traffic lights, signs, and riders side by side.
How is anybody supposed to take that seriously? - 1hrSleep, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Are they? We're not allowed to have self-defense pepper sprays here. But I do have bear mace in the house... For some reason I think a bear might be a bit more resistant to such tactics than a person.
Also, it's a good idea to have a camera mounted on your bike/helmet these days for exactly these situations. Get into an accident? Someone's harassing you? You have your camera as evidence. Get a shot of that license plate and the other guy has no case. Definitely worth it if you get into an accident and it boils down to a he said she said. - 1hrSleep, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Cheers!
Except that I wear my shorts underneath my pants... (I don't like shorts in general) - 1hrSleep, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Bicycle + Panniers + Backpack + Trailer? *Shrug*
- 1hrSleep, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Sorry, I should add that I agree with the safety bit. But both sides could stand to learn how to deal with bikes on the road. (I would have just edited my first comment but Chrome's being wonky.)
- chirhonius, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Or anywhere else in CA for that matter. Half the drivers are either DUI or tweaking out in some fashion.
- 1hrSleep, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Damn, that's a good idea with the pepper spray... A douche in a ***** looking pickup with his boyfriend did the exact same thing to me. I mean, it didn't work... I saw them coming with my mirror.. Passed them a few seconds later at light where I turned right.
- gkiltz, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1That's because bicycle accidents are, depending on where you go, either counted in a whole separate category or not at all! Unless there is a motor vehicle, even a motorcycle, involved as well!
- auto98, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1cycling = The act, sport, or technique of riding or racing on a bicycle, motorcycle, or similar vehicle.
bicycling is purely on a bicycle, not another vehicle -
