- Lucas123, on 03/10/2009, -1/+26Leave it up to scientists to spend oodles of money trying to figure out the obvious. The secret to gray hair? Children.
- kismetropolis, on 03/10/2009, -2/+15Pft. I could've told them that years ago. I started going grey at age 19 when my parents' already abusive and damaged marriage started to deteriorate more seriously and I was forced to be the adult in the household.
And my hair has started greying more rapidly under the stress of my most recent job change. - inactive, on 03/11/2009, -0/+9Is it gray or grey?
- iDiggYa, on 03/10/2009, -0/+8Now we just have to find a cure for death!
- xsecretfiles, on 03/11/2009, -0/+6...can anyone explain to me why me and my friends in our early 20's have grey hairs? we have no children, no family worries, easy jobs..etc
granted it's only few grey hairs here and there, but still it's a puzzle to us. - josejimenez, on 03/11/2009, -0/+5Deep down inside, you and your friends secretly hate and despise one another. The putrid contempt you have for each other leads to the ingrained bitterness that manifests itself in the graying hair.
- EricAnderton, on 03/11/2009, -1/+5Depends on what color, or colour, you're talking about.
- abbasatpsu, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4somebody needs a hug
- V1ncent, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3My hair follicles all jump on the bandwagon when they see one hair on my head rebel and go gray. They're just like non-conformist goth kids who in an effort to rebel all dress alike. I'm trying to get my hair-follicles to understand this paradoxical trap but so far no luck.
- maxnb, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3AMEN BROTHER
- moosejaw99, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3I took the meaning of Grayskull as a kid to heart. BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!
- YME1280, on 03/10/2009, -1/+4I think I'd look like a gray hawk, or something similar if I had gray hair. I won't really mind it when it happens to me.
- inactive, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3Cool we can get gay hair.. oh wait.. what..? Who else read it like that..?
- RumpleForeskin3, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3Forget gray hair, what about balding!?
- divinediva, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2Now they just need to find a cure for baldness!!
- jsdratm, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2I do too and I'm 23, I even had a few in high school. Now I have quite a few on the sides of my head.
- moosejaw99, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2Or it would've anyways.
- EricAnderton, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2Also: spouses that act like children.
- CrikeyMike, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2Economic meltdowns for new presidents. And, yes, kids for me. Regarding Obama, maybe he will fit in more (not look so much like a kid) in the Washington set. Gray is power it seems.
- inactive, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2The secret to gray hair? Getting old..
- ChayesFSS, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2Nice to see some scientist aren't woo'd by the possibility of curing things like cancer but stick with things that matter!
- inactive, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1I'm 21 and gray
- moosejaw99, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1I think it's subjective for everyone. I am 32 and have quite a bit of grey hair.
I blame a steady diet of RC Cola and Sour Patch Kids through the mid 90's. - mojoel, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1Proecia. Or the cheaper IDENTICAL drug: Proscar.
- DivineMonkey, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1I've been going grey since i was 18, i'm now 26 and got tons of grey hair. I'm even finding grey facial hair and nasal hair...Scary *****.
Oh and i'm not married nor a parent and lack any real responsibility =) - frequentFlyer, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1Kids didn't cause the grays, the wife did.
- stpaulmatt, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1Next on the agenda: Meditate your way to a larger penis
- CaptMonkey, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1I'm pretty sure it's mostly just genetics. I'm 25 and already noticeably going gray. My dad was fully gray when he was 30. I think that I've been less stressed in the past 4 years than any point that I can remember in my life, yet my hair has been turning gray faster than ever. I'm okay with it though, the ladies dig gray hair.
- MicrosoftBob, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1Take Lexapro and read 'The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying."
- cmotdibbler, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1I started getting a few greys in high school. Now at 46 hair is almost all white, more forehead too!
- whytey, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1How can we stop getting it?
- Ellipsys, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1Enjoy your impotence and other possible side effects.
Proscar and its lower dose, higher priced cousin were meant to shrink the prostate by binding DHT. There are many side effects to this - the retention of hair is merely one of them. We need to keep working to find a better solution because a full head of hair isn't worth a limp phallus and lost libido, to many men. - jpop, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1Well, assuming it is related to the issue in the research, it could be due to improper enzyme production in the follicles. Thus not breaking down the hydrogen peroxide fast enough to prevent bleaching of the hair.
- Halligan, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1I started going grey at 15. This was true of several generations of relatives as well, so I can't say that I am shocked to hear it is likely genetic. As I am 33 and have about a 4:1 salt to pepper ratio, I am excited that this research could yield a treatment. Even better if the research/treatment options lead to something that could cure a serious illness.
- EricAnderton, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1I disagree. I think there's some potential useful research to come out of this:
“If it was purely based on one’s antioxidant system or the ability to handle oxidative stress, then you still have to explain why some follicles can produce perfectly pigmented hairs in a sea of white hairs,”
Oxidative stress = high amounts of free radicals, which can cause cancer. Finding ways to help reduce oxidative stress, as well as use greying as an indicator, could *save* lives - not just improve them. Moreover, research down this path could also yield insight as to how the body copes under these conditions.
Moreover, people are highly tuned to cue in on physical features, especially those associated with aging, as an indication of health - it's all a part of mate selection. So following up on the underlying connections can help bring much needed scientific backing to these intuitions. Besides, wouldn't it be nice if your doctor could just look at you and *know* what's wrong? - gotpwr, on 03/13/2009, -0/+1Dont care about Obama getting what about me. How do i revearse the bleaching.
- abbasatpsu, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1I like grey hair. Actually am looking forward to them since I have only a couple right now. I think they give a more distinct look.
- frontaxle, on 03/11/2009, -1/+2Grey hair is a crown of splendor.
- jpop, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1Unfortunately they didn't really come up with anything direct in that research. It does give some possible avenues though. Drugs/topical things to reduce hydrogen peroxide in the scalp, drugs to improve enzyme production to improve the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide in the scalp, etc.
I'd judge the meditation and all as having a pretty low success process unless you are really stressed out. - nick2525, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1I still tend to believe gray hair is stress related. I am white and began going gray at age 24 after my first year in an extremely stressful job position. Basically going from barely any responsibility, to having the "weight of the world" resting on my shoulders. I was in way over my head and had a hard time learning to leave work at work. I lost a lot of sleep the first year.
I am 28 now and beginning to look very "salt and pepper". My Dad didn't start going gray till his late 30's and my Mom in her 40's. I am still in the same position but I've learned how to minimize my stress and handle my job properly. However, the frosty look is still there, reminding me of a turbulent past.
I keep my hair short, so dying it all the time is too much work. Oh well at least people take me more seriously. And my fiance' loves me. At least I'm not balding....yet :P - inactive, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1I know this all to well.
- nick2525, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1Going gray is no problem but believe me it SUCKS to go gray when your young!
- liuite, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1another page from captain obvious
- DAILYCROW, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1And what about skunk hair, not salt and pepper.
Skunk… that's having dark hair and shock of grey.
It makes woman look a little devilish. - jpop, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1Go ahead and do a survey of the older Tibetan gurus and let me know how many have gray/white/any hair...
- Shigglyboo, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1I would have read it but I don't have NYtimes account....
- SoniaGallagher, on 05/20/2009, -0/+0I had an idea this was true but I guess scientists needed to find evidence to back up their guesses.
