- shagz7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+42yeah, and the beer that they "don't drink" until they're 21
- codemac, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29what? the freshman 10? I thought the reason people said "Freshman 15" was because of the alliteration.
I think you're full of *****. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23No. It isn't (the money, that is). Wait until you hit that cafeteria. Like ribs? Too bad. They've got gristle covered in barbecue sauce. Like Pizza? Tough, they've got raw dough with spaghetti sauce on it. Like subs? That's a shame. They've got stale buns with 3rd rate lunch meat. Like pasta? Hope you like it crunchy. Like the runs? You're gonna have them after a meal at the cafeteria.
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16yeah but the food is garbage... u won't eat most of it and u will stop going by october...
- gothsquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@Mecole21 Yeah thats right and thats why the Freshman gain wieght is form all the fast food they eat because the cafeteria food blows. If they really want freashman to stop gaining wiegh make more dorms with kitchens and teach the students how to cook a little.
- joel2600, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10how could anyone forget the beer when talking about the freshman 15?
- mariod505, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Freshman 15?? I *wish* I could get my 'Mid-life 40' girlfriend back to her 'Freshman 15'...
- mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Digg needs a category called "duh".
- ikak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6They didn't mention the beer because as you noticed, the "Freshman-15" is usually only 5-7 pounds. the other 8-10 pounds is beer!
WOO.
and @ apocalizer. Drinking age in Quebec is 18 as well. Best is frosh week though. Can't wait til the pub crawl. - Dochtuir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wish we got free food. The Catering on campus here is overpriced (UCC , Ireland).
- apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Go to a college on the Canadian border and you can drink at 19... not sure about the legalities, but...
- Equistatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Are you sure that's not just your ego?
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@gothsquirrel That's why the On Campus Burger King was my best friend in college and now that I've graduated I can't even step foot in a burger king without want to vomit...
- shwilmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3what a dumb article. The freshman weight gain is from the new found access to alcohol, not just food.
And the program at Duke was instituted to combat eating disorders that a lot of women on campus have, not because of excessive weight gain for freshmen. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Heh, my school called it the Freshman 30. BIG party school. Well, kind-of. Very small school, big on parties.
- mpitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3apparently not
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@nclbbs - Yes.
- Daiken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Pfft, I didn't gain a pound in first year of college. Soon as I got home though, I gained 10 pounds during the summer.
- bleonard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i coulda used this a while back...and it definately has more to do with consuming alcohol than food.
- codemac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Virginia Tech's food rocks my world.
There are many campus' with good food. - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@NSMike: +digg your description of institutional food, but (to be fair) they aren't all like that. Even though I routinely defame the administration of my alma mater, their cafeteria food is really quite good, and has been recognized as such. The people who work there (not illegal immigrants there, local folk who have been there for years) for the most part actually give a crap about the quality of the food they serve, and it shows. I ate in a fraternity, with an excellent chef. I can't believe that I slept though breakfasts to order so many times, man, what I would give for somebody who would cook eggs, bacon, etc to order now.
Its completely true, youth is wasted on the young. - Jadix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Am I the only one who lost around 5-10 lbs in college?
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I hope your 'Mid-life 40' girlfriend doesn't read dig, or you'll be in the dog house. ;-)
- nclbbs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Excuse my ignorance (i'm not from U.S), but what does the number actually refer to? Is it just the number of pounds you gain in first year of university?
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Drinking age in Manitoba is 18. At university, there was a beer bash or party pretty much any time of the day on any day of the week.
- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think I've got the freshman 200
- mushroomqueen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you manage to get into an institution of learning, wouldn't it be safe to assume that you realise that eating pizzas and ice cream on a regular basis isn't good for you?
- gameboyhippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For me, it was the freshman 45 and I didn't drink!
- codemac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@EricAnderton:
Ever since VT built West End, they've even won #1 food for a public college in 2001 ( i think it was 2001 at least ). The food has improved dramatically. They don't serve a different menu when parents come because they don't need to anymore.
But yes, the dietrick dash is definitely still there. Even though the food tastes better, something about that place just gives you the need to *****. - sudonim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have you been to a residence cafateria lately?
I'll tell you its not a pretty sight. Ours is pretty much brand new and the food is still garbage. Also pizza is the only hot food served all the time (from lunch till closing), and its not even good pizza. But we do have frozen yogurt instead of ice cream, bonus. - dark_helmet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Drinking age is 18 in quebec too, just a short drive for us living in Ontario. Or just get someone over the drinking age to pick some up at a local store. Since when was an age stopped someone from drinking?
- teampoop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I know I got the computer geek 50...
- EricAnderton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@NSMike, @codemac,
I went to Tech back in the 90's, and for the time, I'm afraid that NSMike is right. But it was steadily improving, so by now, I'm sure it's pretty darn good. Is the 'nacho grande' still on the menu?
There was a time when the bathroom stalls in some of the dorms had newsletters taped to the *inside*. It was titled "After Dietrick" for its namesake - the largest mess hall with the biggest reputation for giving students the runs.
Tech also has a reputation for revising their menu specifically for parent's week. It was all slop year-round, before and after.
That having been said, its nice to see Universities take the lead on the issue. After all, it's easy to say "vote with your wallet", but food isn't always cheap, you can't cook much on a hotplate and its not like anyone is going to turn down the college of their choice just because the campus food isn't good for you. - ddxChrist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone else on the Starving Student plan? You know, the one in which you pay less money for less food so you can afford that extra textbook or supplies. I'll be lucky if I don't lose weight.
- misaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I did too. I played basketball in high school and lost all my muscle in college. I lost around 10 pounds.
- fino35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought it was the freshman 50, but then again I was in Louisiana.
More shrimp etouffee and crab cakes please! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Every year must be a freshman year for me.
- mister_llah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had the freshman negative 15 due to the fact I actually exercised.
The key to success is walking everywhere! - Firehunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@codemac
Yes the food was awsome. . .except for Dietrik. ..err D2 now and Schultz. You ever hear of the "Dietrik Dash" or the "Schultz *****"? - jzulli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dining Commons are pretty nasty. I've never met a person who really enjoyed it after the novelty of it being an all-you-can-eat restaurant wore off (usually in the first few weeks, if not days).
I go to the University of California, Santa Cruz, and my university owns and operates a hotel for students and their families called the UCSC Inn. There's a restaurant there that, believe it or not, is free for students who have meal plans. And it's got good food, because it has to impress the parents! They have delicious, expensive desserts, like Creme Brulee and other confectionaries from various local sweets shops.
Unfortunately, UCSC Inn is an exception to the norm. - ddxChrist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It depends. The campus I'm on has many locations for food. We can get something like 2-3 "clubs" per day. A club is a meal at any of those places; however, one of those places is all you can eat. If you're on a larger meal plan, you can afford to go around and eat what you like. If you're on a smaller meal plan, you generally go to the all you can eat dining hall so that you don't die of starvation.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I gained like 40 pounds my freshman year. Of course, I was extremely underweight to begin with, so this just made me look more normal.
Then again, right after graduation, I gained another 30-ish pounds. I leveled off after I learned how to cook. I'm about 10 pounds overweight for my height, but you really can't tell. - socbret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Freshman year I ate about 10 meals in the cafeteria first semester, second semester I went to Wendy's or something every night. It's not just the bad food, its the annoying as hell atmosphere
- will42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You get unlimited cafeteria food in America? *****! I'm stuck on tiny portions that invariably involve potatoes. I suspect the university has a deal with nearby pizza takeaways in order to scam students' money.
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kind of opposite of Europe. Here you lose weight in your first year of university because you have to cook for yourself (read: only drink beer).
- GinsuGuy585, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1EVERYONE has a friend, who has a friend, who has a fake ID. It's just how things are done.
Oh and random parties
"Got id?"
"Sorry left it at home."
"Ok go on in."
And I go to a tech school too. - ddxChrist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From the article: "The problem isn't always weight gain: Some new students lose weight because they're no longer getting three meals a day from Mom and Dad."
This is my problem, actually. While I didn't get three meals a day from "Mom and Dad," I was used to preparing 4-6 smaller, healthier meals per day in conjunction with rigorous weight training. Due to my body type, this is actually the only way I've been able to gain weight in a healthy manner (mostly muscle).
The switch to two meals a day means a day is quite difficult for someone of my background. Acquiring healthy food for the dorm is considerably difficult. Protein powder can help somewhat. - Omniquisitor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Amen to that, well kinda.
Muscle is how I gained mass my first two years.
High school graduate - 160lbs @ 16% BF
Freshman year - 180lbs @ 12% BF
Sophomore year - 190lbs @ 9% BF
And I feel better now than I ever did when I was rail-thin (I'm kinda tall). - misfit815, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's all about the food at the cafeteria. At Indiana U., I did fine my first two years. I switched to Purdue my third year and fattened up. The bulk of the food there was all starch. You'd eat like a pig and be hungry again two hours later.
- hypoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0West End is awesome. D2 is a place I try to avoid... Even if I go in starved, I lose my appetite pretty much after one plate.
