- sciencelovesyou, on 07/18/2009, -3/+87I can understand the concern. Why, we wouldn't want the troops doing anything dangerous in a War Zone!
- noupsell, on 07/18/2009, -4/+73Unless the smell or glowing cherry gives your position away (then it really is the cigarette that kills you and your comrades) otherwise they should be able to smoke like chimneys. Stressful enough job without having to be jonesing for a ***** cigarette. Give me a break.
- MrBogard, on 07/18/2009, -2/+48About as long as a gun ban.
- ConcernedCanuck, on 07/18/2009, -4/+43I wouldn't think a smoking ban would last very long in the military...
- oldhick, on 07/18/2009, -0/+37Yep, that would suck. That's why they are able to "choose" to not smoke if they like.
- inactive, on 07/18/2009, -0/+32i only smoked in the military, now i don't. go figure,,,
edit: its 3 am at night, you have been awake and hungry on duty for last 20+ hours, and it doesn't end until 10 am after being relieved and debriefed, you can hardly keep your eyes open, yellow jackets have warned off, coffee, good luck finding....take out a pack from out cammies pocket, light one up, take a puff, look up at the stars and let your thoughts run.....thats how it is. - idbjoshm, on 07/18/2009, -0/+31Whatever you do, Hank, don't light a cigarette. A good sniper can see a hot cherry for miles. -Brock Samson
- DouglasQ, on 07/18/2009, -3/+34Those things'll kill you.
- missinglink, on 07/18/2009, -5/+31Of course, tobacco companies aren't allowed to send free cigarettes into war zones anymore, so now soldiers have to pay for them.
My friend served two tours in Iraq and told me that troops really want cigarettes and chew, but they can't get them because some nanny-state do-gooder in the U.S. has decided it's too dangerous, and (worse) that a soldier is too stupid to make sound decisions if (gasp) there are free cigarettes available. - mjk340, on 07/18/2009, -3/+24or high school english class
- ShingoEX, on 07/18/2009, -8/+29The idea of banning stress relievers in high-stress situations was a brilliant plan
/s - inactive, on 07/18/2009, -3/+24This anti-smoking thing as gone far enough. Let military members smoke. They're volunteering to possibly go to a desolate hell hole where they might get blown up without warning. Let them alleviate as much stress as they can, whenever they can.
- chickenloco, on 07/18/2009, -3/+23I'm all for a healthier army... But you have to realize the stress that a soldier faces, especially in a war zone. Smoking is one of the few things that they can do to relax and help get their minds off the war, if only for a brief moment
- DrowSwordsman, on 07/18/2009, -0/+19Cigarettes not being used in the military in 20 years is just as "achievable" as the Reagan administration saying reducing illegal drug demand and supply to nothing was a realistic goal.
Lol. - DouglasQ, on 07/18/2009, -0/+18/facepalm
- Cojafoji, on 07/18/2009, -4/+22How about we stop putting useless restrictions on the men and women who at any minute could die in our defense?
Hmmm? - Chooxo, on 07/18/2009, -4/+22Solid Snake smokes. 'Nuff said.
- charlie6969, on 07/18/2009, -3/+20If there is any group in the entire world that deserves freedom of choice more, I can't think of one.
- Mujokan, on 07/18/2009, -1/+18"Put on yer Nicorette patches if you got 'em" just doesn't have the same ring.
- sny1120, on 07/18/2009, -4/+21put them back in the MREs
- sharkydog, on 07/18/2009, -1/+18@ crazytucker: Yeah, but actually running while you're stoned sucks.
- UberGeek404, on 07/18/2009, -4/+21Please note the complete lack of any references to "freedom".
I mean what are the fighting for? - schrutefan, on 07/18/2009, -1/+17Trying to picture Band of Brothers without the smoking. Doesn't work.
- B1665r, on 07/18/2009, -0/+15Trying to imagine any point in American history up until the 1990's without smoking.... Doesn't work.
- AlliedIncome, on 07/18/2009, -0/+15What a bunch of crap, yeah I smoked when I was downrange and so did ninety percent of my fellow soldiers, obviously your not going to smoke while your out on patrol but when you have down time back on base soldiers should have the right to do what they want with the few minutes of FREEdom time they receive, your tellin me some dudes gonna sit in his office smokin' a cigar making decisions for people half way across the word fighting someone elses war...B.S...WE as AMERICANS have the freedom to do as we choose because of the people that have the courage to defend the world as Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Sailors, if these folks wanna have a smoke you should buy them a pack or two as gratitude...whata A$$
- Puppetfunk, on 07/18/2009, -0/+15Brock, I don't smoke!
- aflaks, on 07/18/2009, -0/+14good, well now's a really lousy time to start
- PorkPistol, on 07/18/2009, -0/+13I was stationed at Log Base Seitz in Baghdad. Right outside our gate was an incinerator. Less then a mile from us was Camp Trashcan. The incinerator was burned every other day. Camp Trashcan was burned once a week. LBS always had a cloud of smoke on it. I think cancer is coming one way or another.
- crazytucker, on 07/18/2009, -4/+16I play halo 3 better when I'm high.
- Liability, on 07/18/2009, -1/+13Clearly you've never been in combat.
- fileerror, on 07/18/2009, -3/+15I honestly can't see any general without a giant cigar. Let 'em smoke!
- Tarl, on 07/18/2009, -1/+13You spout so much BS. Yeah let me do some jumping jacks while taking cover at the same time. And the military does daily exercises with a x-mile run regardless.
- rocknog, on 07/18/2009, -1/+12Er, how can you be puritanic and liberal at the same time? Telling other people what they are and are not allowed to put in their own bodies is most definitely not a liberal stance.
- sharkydog, on 07/18/2009, -2/+13What if they don't want to go on "a non smoking program"?
- NikoKun, on 07/18/2009, -1/+11As free beings, it was his choice to smoke. People are well aware of the risks, and have been for a long time now.
Quit devaluing the importance of personal choices. If someone is willing to except the negative health consequences of smoking, they should be allowed to do so. - Opiate, on 07/18/2009, -4/+13Why is liberty always a right wing issue? Kind of sad..
- sgvprelude, on 07/18/2009, -0/+9Only smoke they're worried about killing them isn't coming from a cigarette.
- Mship, on 07/18/2009, -2/+11If you are serious you are an idiot marijuana would slow down there reaction time and make a bad situation worst.
- B1665r, on 07/18/2009, -9/+17Not as fast as bullets....
- allenglines878, on 07/18/2009, -1/+9I'd chain smoke if I was in a warzone. There's a little more stress than what deep breathing exercises can relieve there.
- SouthsideIrish, on 07/18/2009, -3/+11Gave up a lot? Your kidding right, we give them all up when we join the military.
- pintomp3, on 07/18/2009, -5/+13Wanna save the lives of the troops? Don't send them into wars based on lies.
- marmotjmarmot, on 07/18/2009, -0/+8Smoke 'em if you got 'em.
- Drahkir, on 07/18/2009, -4/+12I'm an ex-smoker of almost a year and couldn't be happier. It's a filthy, destructive, expensive habit that I NEVER plan to return to. That being said, I know for a fact if I get IA'd back to Iraq, I'm bringing a carton...
- thedogfatherx, on 07/18/2009, -0/+7Little Bitch.
- Drahkir, on 07/18/2009, -2/+9It's not good enough to ask these fine men and women to fight and die for us, but now you're demanding they give up smoking while they're doing it?! I can't argue with you that smoking is terribly destructive and provides no benefits, but do you think maybe our servicemen could choose to quit AFTER they're done fighting for us overseas?!
- mcdropkicker, on 07/18/2009, -3/+10I don't understand the relevance of this. I guess I've always assumed they could regardless unless they're around explosives or propellants or something. I don't see how this is news. If anyone has any insight, please let me know.
- rocknog, on 07/18/2009, -0/+7You're right, it isn't a very liberal stance, which is why I, as a liberal, am opposed to gun control. Ooh, really thought you had me there, didn't you? "Oh look, it's a liberal, I'll point out his hypocrisy by bringing up the fact that liberals support gun control."
