- dotlizard, on 04/26/2008, -2/+244who knew that a stern talking-to would fail to prevent hormone-crazed teenagers from goin' at it like rabbits?
seriously, when you consider the potential consequences, it's absolutely criminal not to teach the importance and proper use of protection. you do this in the context of teaching all the other downsides (emotional and social) to becoming sexually active at a young age, and you hope for the best -- but you know some of them are going to do it no matter what, so you make sure they have the resources to keep that from destroying their lives. - Bukowsky, on 04/26/2008, -4/+131Relying Abstinence is a complete joke..
Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's bad to teach abstinence to kids, but people need to start realizing that kids are going to do the dirty deed, no matter what. If you teach them both Abstinence & the proper safe-sex techniques, then you will have much more success at preventing them from doing something stupid, like having a baby or catching an STD. - Scottievm, on 04/26/2008, -0/+117OGC
- MetalXSlug, on 04/26/2008, -9/+99Yes clearly the abstinence programs in Africa have been a great success. Why I've heard they have just about eliminated AIDS by praying to jesus.
- w09p, on 04/26/2008, -12/+95This is what happens when you let religious nuts dictate what is taught. Science out, dogma in.
Celebrate good times, come on! - locamama, on 04/26/2008, -3/+84Exactly, teaching that abstinence is the best choice is fine. Teaching that abstinence is the only choice - stupid. They actually teach the kids that condoms fail. Way to make sure that when they DO have sex they don't bother with protection.
- lohphat, on 04/26/2008, -2/+64It's because the puritanical tradition in America that sex is dirty. Note that on TV showing violence is tolerated much more than depicting people pleasuring each other.
Social Conservatives would rather see their children die or be unable to procreate due to STD damage than to imagine their little precious snowflakes could possibly be having sex.
Go figure. - Ganja420, on 04/26/2008, -2/+63I heard on the radio that teens who have been taught sexual abstinence in school are 3 times more likely to have anal sex before the age of 18 than non-abstinence teens....
They don't think oral and anal count as sex... and therefore the girls can remain abstinent by keeping it to the butt and mouth only - Phlieger, on 04/26/2008, -6/+67Well, duh.
- lohphat, on 04/26/2008, -3/+58"Rep. John Duncan, a Tennessee Republican, said that it seems "rather elitist" that people with academic degrees in health think they know better than parents what type of sex education is appropriate. "I don't think it's something we should abandon," he said of abstinence-only funding."
Well given your constituents are mouth-breathing, bible-thumping hayseeds, anyone with a college degree is "elitist".
Since when did "elite" become a dirty word? We've had 8 years of stupid in the White House, can we have some "elite" now please? - drlha, on 04/26/2008, -1/+50God I wish they taught abstinence at my school when I was a teenager.
- tanjonner, on 04/26/2008, -1/+42Wait...I'm confused. Did they actually think it would succeed?
- chambana, on 04/26/2008, -0/+38Well yea, teens are better at getting abortions then in the 40s.
- dondara, on 04/26/2008, -6/+43Haha, the uptight asswipes fail again. Look, you can't lie to kids and expect them to listen. Tell them to be safe and help them do so. Any other tactic will fail 100% of the time. The only high school kids not having sex still want to.
- inactive, on 04/26/2008, -5/+41its working fine for me
- inactive, on 04/26/2008, -4/+39Taken from menarebetterthanwomen.com :
Anal is the only for sure way not to get pregnant. Even abstinence failed once. - inactive, on 04/26/2008, -0/+35"It worked in Africa."
AIDS??? - rpebble, on 04/26/2008, -0/+35I would love a "reckless endangerment" charge for the abstinence teachers. How many kids have to get knocked up or catch STDs before they realize this whole policy is based on insanity?
- Suricou, on 04/26/2008, -1/+35They also use exagerated failure rates, and quite often tell the kids that condoms provide no protection against HIV because 'the virus is small enough to slip through the holes' - an outright lie, at least for modern latex condoms. The failure rate for abstinance-educated pupils is actually higher whent hey do use contraception because they are not taught the basic rules of use such as 'check the expirary date,' 'do not put it on backwards,' and the important 'after orgasm, do not stay in her until your erection is soft, or the condom will slip off.' Little things which seem obvious in retrospect, but which are easily overlooked but a first-timer who has not been instructed.
- Ajajadude, on 04/26/2008, -1/+34Yes, they fail, but they pretty much give you the impression that it's almost a guarantee that they will fail which is far from the truth. I've never once had one break on me and that's because I took a comprehensive sex ed class that taught just about everything one needs to know to be safe and smart about sex. And despite being taught through the heathen method, I have no kids or STDs!
- Celeron, on 04/26/2008, -0/+31You can't restrain two horny teens from doing it.
- h4mx0r, on 04/26/2008, -2/+32Nooo, really?
You can only suppress instinct through words for so much you know.
(I mean, sex ed is always good, but it's not going to suppress much) - Nhmarine, on 04/26/2008, -4/+33Hey, you only have one life. Why waste the best years of your life by waiting for marriage to have sex? Go premarital sex! Boo! to the opression that bible toting abstinence advocates are trying to push on everyone.
- otakushark, on 04/26/2008, -0/+29Delude yourself much?
- blackeagle613, on 04/26/2008, -2/+30I think that went out the window once we got this born again idiot in the white house
- sb66, on 04/26/2008, -2/+30More evidence of the intellectual level of republicans:
"Rep. John Duncan, a Tennessee Republican, said that it seems "rather elitist" that people with academic degrees in health think they know better than parents what type of sex education is appropriate."
Yeah those damn educated people and their studies; what are they thinking? How silly to base policy on results! - pintomp3, on 04/26/2008, -0/+28how did it work in africa? have u seen the level of AIDS in africa? but as long they don't make baby jesus cry by using condoms it's ok, right? if the human species need books/radio/news to learn about sex, we'd have gone extinct a long time ago.
- Suricou, on 04/26/2008, -2/+29Of course. If they die abstinant, they go to heaven and live in bliss under the glory of the Lord. But if they have sex outside of marriage and then die, they will be tormented eternally by His Rightous Judgement for their sinful ways. Better to die young and go to heaven than to live a long life and go to hell.
- Culled, on 04/26/2008, -4/+31Condoms do sometimes fail. Only teaching abstinence is as stupid as teaching that birth control is 100% effective. Just tell the kids the truth.
- pintomp3, on 04/26/2008, -3/+30faith based initiatives are unconstitutional anyway. what ever happened to separation of church and state?
- fantasmacanino, on 04/26/2008, -0/+26You don't have much choice, do you?
- gak001, on 04/26/2008, -0/+26Wait... so the old "If you have sex, you'll get pregnant... and AIDS... and die" method of sex ed isn't effective!?
- shcforward, on 04/26/2008, -2/+27In all fairness, the girls that were getting pregnant early when I was in school weren't listening to what the teacher had to say anyway - whether it was abstinence, safe sex, biology, math, reading, etc.
- gcman94, on 04/26/2008, -9/+33They should come out with better flavored condoms
- SuperJay, on 04/26/2008, -0/+24"It worked in Africa."
lol joke post? - inactive, on 04/26/2008, -0/+23Wow... Just wow... That is, by leaps and bounds, the absolute WORST argument in favor of abstinence I have ever heard in my entire life! I mean, I have heard a lot, but that just blows everything else straight out of the water.
- AndyStitzer, on 04/26/2008, -1/+23"Lawmakers cited government statistics showing that one in four U.S. teenage girls has a sexually transmitted disease and 30 percent of U.S. girls become pregnant before the age of 20"
Does 30% seem high to anyone else? - MalaysianMafia, on 04/26/2008, -3/+25breaking news! conservatives and their antiquated, idiotic social policies both fail
- otakushark, on 04/26/2008, -1/+23I'd like to see the proponents practice abstention themselves. Permanently.
- stev31h, on 04/26/2008, -0/+21OGC programs soon to be implemented nationwide
- x0rcist, on 04/26/2008, -4/+25Abstinence leads to extinction.
- fluffyturtle, on 04/26/2008, -3/+241 in 4 teenage girls have a STD? Jesus, there aren't going to be any clean people to ***** anymore.
- mrvalue, on 04/26/2008, -0/+20I get the feeling you had different plans for that sentence.
- inactive, on 04/26/2008, -1/+20Forbidden fruit tastes so sweet ... except that you don't know how quite to eat is since you have not practiced putting a rubber on a banana nor read The Joy of Sex.
- Phlieger, on 04/26/2008, -2/+21No actually that was pretty funny.
- aliengoods, on 04/27/2008, -0/+18@Fatloser
I'm guessing it's a burden you bear alone. - inactive, on 04/26/2008, -1/+19Translated:
Abstinence is a fine program [the way it is]
I live in Mexico and people do not have premarital relations because the Bible prohibits it. - No0n3, on 04/26/2008, -0/+18It's almost surreal how afraid America is of sex. It really shows how big of a role religion still plays in politics.
- Devotia, on 04/26/2008, -0/+18Whether or not it suppresses it, the important thing is that they're using protection. You can't stop kids from having sex, but you might be able to get them to use a condom.
- rpebble, on 04/26/2008, -1/+18I sincerely doubt that no kids are boning just because the bible says not to.
