- Drepon, on 11/02/2009, -5/+53Does it have anything to do with XX chromosomes?
- immatellyouwhat, on 11/02/2009, -5/+38It's called the Vagina Gene.
- capheine, on 11/02/2009, -7/+38A follow-up study concluded that 100% of women have that gene.
- Zoshx, on 11/02/2009, -7/+30Most women have this gene variation.
- Jibberish, on 11/02/2009, -1/+23Is this gene also related to high Cell Phone usage, SUV's, 8 kids, Starbucks, and Soccer?
- pwarnock, on 11/02/2009, -2/+21So there's some truth to the stereotypes.
- pr0lixity, on 11/02/2009, -0/+13Zot zot!
- wassamatta, on 11/02/2009, -1/+13That Asian stereotype is BS. Look at any Amer-Asian (sorry my view is based on living in the north east). Most of them drive well. Take an FOB (sorry I learned that term from Asians) and sure they'll have drive like turdtards. Go to China where they are used to the local traffic patterns / reading signs in a native language and they drive fine. They do tend to come close to hitting pedestrians but that was the norm in Beijing and Shanghai (cars seem to have the right of way).
If someone from the U.S. visited Japan and got behind that steering wheel on the right and driving up on the left side, I'm sure the locals would be making straight eyed jokes. - Rain12913, on 11/02/2009, -1/+11That's oversimplifying it. In addition to sample size, statistical significance is determined by other factors, such as alpha (significance level). For this reason, to say that a sample size of 30 is somehow the golden ticket to statistical significance is incorrect.
- inactive, on 11/03/2009, -1/+11sterotypes are ries.
comprete ries. - TsuruchiBrian, on 11/02/2009, -1/+10"Some people aren't ready to attribute poor performance behind the wheel to genes. Diane Moore, who runs A to Z Driving School in Anaheim and has been a driving instructor for 13 years, says the study's premise ignores students' capacity to learn and correct their bad behavior.
“I had a customer the day before yesterday who's a very well-educated university professor who lost his license because he had failed his driving test,” Moore said.
“He knows how to drive, but we were helping him with different techniques and tools to help him make better decisions. And he retook the test and passed.”"
Why are we asking a driving school instructor what he thinks about genetics and statistics?
Einstein thinks space and time are relative, but Joe the plumber remains skeptical. Joe and his family have a lot of real world experience having existed in space and time for over 200 generations and claims that Mr. Einsteins theory ignores the fact that he nor his ancestors have never seen any evidence of "relativity". - anxcaptain, on 11/02/2009, -4/+11Thats funny cause UCI is mostly asian*
- kingmanic, on 11/02/2009, -1/+7It's racist confirmation bias. In tallies of accidents the only ones who get into more accidents than their relative proportion of the population are teen males and the elderly. Asians or Arabs or blacks or Hispanics or white people generally have no special tendency for accidents.
- BCBudd, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5Good point. However, if your in the left lane, driving below the flow of traffic (not the speed limit), you deserve to be tail-gated.
- plaguepony, on 11/02/2009, -1/+6This is a test of 49 people. Lets wait till it is replicated.
- kingmanic, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5In mainland china signs, lanes, and traffic lights are mild suggestions. They have their own logic but you have to be really on the ball to drive there as it's freaking chaos.
- velveetaavenger, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4Being too cautious while driving can be nearly as bad as being too reckless. People who are afraid to speed up enough to merge safely with traffic for example.
- MrKev150, on 11/02/2009, -2/+6Have u seen those asians drifting and doing crazy ***** in Japan? I think they are good drivers.
- JasonAdams13, on 11/02/2009, -2/+6You know what, I'm tired of all the sexist jokes against women in these comments. Why not some racist jokes against Asians?
- angelgabe, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3Alpha is basically the likelyhood that the results could be due to chance or error. Most studies of this sort use a pretty high alpha since it's so hard to get statistical significance from such small numbers. That doesn't mean the study is right or wrong. What the alpha means is that there's a small probability (usually 5% for studies like this) that the results are due to something other than what the researcher is trying to prove. 5% is standard for non-medical studies (studies that don't involve medications or other forms of treatment).
- veriix, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3That should but "not always" but anyways. People who don't follow roadsigns, people who don't pay attention/easily distracted, people with slow recreation time, don't know how to use a 4 way stop. These people aren't reckless drivers, just bad drivers.
- InfinitySnatch, on 11/02/2009, -8/+11I'll make a comment about it being hereditary in Asians since everyone else tried being the first to make a 'women drivers joke'.
- rockgokou, on 11/02/2009, -4/+7University of Chinese Immigrants
- rlbond86, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3Oh great. Now even auto insurance companies are going to talk about "preexisting conditions."
- wassamatta, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2My bad... I should have said round eyes. And missed the Y on 'Take any FOB' - MEH
- EddiePotato, on 11/02/2009, -2/+4I can't think of a type of bad driving that isn't reckless.
- Behnood, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2Something tells me this study was funded by insurance companies - higher premiums if you have this gene.
- Bisquick, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2You're grammer sucks.
- elliotys, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2>60%
- BCBudd, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2I agree with Verlix. Also included are people who drive slow in the passing lane. This causes accidents and road rage.
- veriix, on 11/02/2009, -3/+5bad driving ≠ reckless driving
- Apex3, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2Wow, what a horribly carried out study. They only looked at 29 people, and only 7 out of them had this gene, and they're drawing conclusions on the whole population based on this? Not only that but studying them in a simulation on a race track? How someone drives on a race track when they are completely focused on driving has nothing to do with how they drive on the road. Most bad driving is a result of not paying attention, you really think anyone in there wasn't paying full attention? On top of that, bad driving is 100% subjective, there's no definitive bad driver, especially when you're talking about "how far they deviated from the center" on a race track, as you aren't even supposed to be in the center half the time.
I could see the short term memory loss thing being related to the gene, but what does that have to do with driving well? - Zomgondo, on 11/02/2009, -1/+3Better yet, jokes about Asian women in minivans!
- KokomoNYC, on 11/03/2009, -1/+2The fact that teen males get into so many accidents is particularly hilarious on Digg (where women-can't-drive jokes are in abundance) because sexually frustrated teen males probably represent a large part of the demographic.
- wassamatta, on 11/02/2009, -1/+2I saw a soccer mom pouring a 1 gallon jug of milk into a cup while driving her 2 ton SUV. I was very tempted to pull out in front of her... just to watch her flip her vehicle and get milk all over the interior.
- InfinitySnatch, on 11/02/2009, -3/+4Obviously there's more to it than that, but just because an experiment uses only 49 participants does not mean it's inherently invalid.
- BaoUnit, on 11/02/2009, -2/+3I like vaginas.
- pauldy, on 11/02/2009, -1/+2The reason there are stereotypes like Asians being bad drivers is because so few immigrants want to learn English when they come to the US anymore because we hand hold them thorugh everything but road signs. Not being able to read road signs causes accidents, in Texas we have the same problem with drivers from mexico. I do find this gene interesting though and wonder does this mean we can put restrictions on these people licenses, like they can only drive a moped and can't get on the highways or drive at night?
- noumuon, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1driving in shanghai is a horrible, horrible experience even when you can read the signs and are used to the traffic patterns.
- inactive, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1Well you can't really hold someone accountable for being born with the wrong genes, can you...
- KokomoNYC, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1I agree. Horses are particularly bad drivers, especially when wearing blinders.
- KokomoNYC, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1As I understand it, current genomic ethics laws forbid insurance companies or employers from taking action on the basis of genetic information.
- fordry, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1not only is the test size tiny, they are also using a "video game simulator" which is not like driving a car. I suck at new games, usually takes me a bit of time to learn them and yet i had driving figured out pretty quickly and if i do say so myself, i'm a pretty good driver (never crashed).
- akashra, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1I'm pretty sure the other UCI would like to know something about all the bad drivers who plow into their members - the Union Cycliste Internationale being the 'other' UCI.
- Moetownslick, on 11/03/2009, -1/+2I drove a car along the paths of the old Campus Village at UCI, no joke.
Fun times. - elliotys, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1The point is, the round eyed jokes, just like the Asians can't drive jokes are really funny.
- Rain12913, on 11/03/2009, -1/+2"Obviously there's more to it than that, but just because an experiment uses only 49 participants does not mean it's inherently invalid."
Yes, it is obvious, but your original post indicated that you weren't aware of this, as you said "You only need a sample of 30 people to be accepted as statistically significant." As I said above, no, you don't "only need" a sample of 30 people to be accepted as significant, there is more to it than that. - Spo8, on 11/03/2009, -2/+2Pretty sure it's just a chromosome.
That second X one. - Frogger4Truth, on 11/02/2009, -2/+2about half the population carries this genetic predisposition towards bad driving. their called women.
- edwadokun, on 11/02/2009, -3/+3survey says... yup dumbest comment ever
