- BitSlash, on 05/20/2009, -1/+22Er, the title is inaccurate. SIV and HIV aren't the same virus. It is generally accepted to be "easier" to create antibodies to SIV, which has been done for many years. Furthermore, there are already many techniques that appear to immunize against SIV, which do not work for human HIV.
I'm not dumping on this finding, but this is only the beginning of the research. - inactive, on 05/20/2009, -3/+16There will never be a vaccine for HIV/AIDS. There will never be a cure. However, the drug companies will eventually develop a drug that will allow you to live just fine with the virus, as long as you buy the pills. For the rest of your life. Profit!
- duewydo, on 05/20/2009, -0/+11Although there is truth in that statement, it is not exactly 100% accurate. I mean tell that to the person who got HIV from a blood transfusion...
- abadonn, on 05/20/2009, -3/+14Digg, curing HIV since 2004.

- J353, on 05/20/2009, -2/+10They probably just put the monkeys in a room and surrounded them with MonkeyBucks, the monkey currency.
- JohnFrum, on 05/20/2009, -0/+7Jenny McCarthy: But did it give a small number of them autism? Did it? Do you know for sure? Better not risk it than.
- MightyUpsetter, on 05/20/2009, -1/+7A Vaccine is not a cure.
- Lucas123, on 05/20/2009, -3/+8Could have used that 30 or so years ago.
- KungFooJesus, on 05/20/2009, -1/+6That's great that monkeys can have unprotected anal intercourse again, but what about me?
- dezman2003, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4I agree. Why bother if it's going to be expensive? It's not like expensive things ever become cheap after time passes. Of ***** it. You are a ***** idiot. Don't cure aids unless it can instantly be made cheap and distributed to everyone right away? Seriously? Read what you said a few times then go be sad or something.
- GeorgeStone2, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3Cured cancer in 05, 06, 08 and 09.
- GeorgeStone2, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3It's not a cure.
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -1/+3I'll digg any advance against AIDS/HIV.
I lived through the eighties and early ninties and that's more than I can say for a ***** of my friends. - Raiden72, on 05/20/2009, -5/+7another month, another cure for AIDS.
Where's those super efficient cheap solar panels too? - upick, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Possibly a lead to 1 of the biggest break through in medical history
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2This is good news... and so what if every other day we find out more and more about vaccines and medications to help, treat, and prevent HIV. The fact is is that we are one step closer to eureka. So lets keep the optimism at a high shall we? :)
- Lexxvs, on 05/20/2009, -5/+7Thus, the remaining questions will be: Will it work on humans?
And, secondly: Will it help those already infected?
Another hope for the cure of this hideous disease. - absurdist, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1That's 1000 Zimbabwe dollars, I assume.
- Rain12913, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1I should read the article before I comment I suppose.

- rockon4life45, on 05/20/2009, -5/+5another day on digg, another cure for hiv/aids
- iolpkij, on 05/21/2009, -0/+0“But Mother Nature has allowed us a few breaks, in that we know that in a very few cases, people who have been infected for a very long time have been able to naturally develop antibodies that neutralize a lot of the circulating virus,” he said. “So, we thought perhaps we could take the genes that represent these antibodies ‘off the shelf,’ so to speak, give them directly to patients and, in essence, bypass the immune system.”

“So, first we worked through mice and showed we could do it with mice,” Johnson explained. “And now we’ve shown that we can actually transfer these genes into monkeys and protect these animals from SIV.”
The findings are in the May 17 online issue of Nature Medicine.

The researchers’ efforts focused on preventing SIV infection in nine macaque monkeys who were “immunized” against SIV by inserting genes already known to express anti-SIV antibodies directly into the monkeys’ muscles. - Niocan, on 05/21/2009, -1/+1The infamous 'Bob Beck Protocol' is an in vivo modification to:

Build your own, heal yourself. - anonymousmedic, on 05/20/2009, -0/+0It seems to me, when facing an enemy this lethal, that a small amount of risk far underweighs the potential reward.
- GeorgeStone2, on 05/20/2009, -2/+1There are no HIV positive diggers. Coincidonks? I think not.
- attackbat, on 05/20/2009, -2/+1Yeah, but it gives them autism.
- anonymousmedic, on 05/20/2009, -3/+2This is great news, one step closer to eradicating this chimera of a virus. Golf clap for you, science. The only question is how many "world leaders" from developing countries will try to stifle this under the claim of aids denialism, and how many anti-pharma conspiracy theorists will try to push this is just another profit racketeering global pharma conspiracy to silence vitamin c or other ***** like that. The amount of pseudoscience and magical thought in our society today over hard science really disturbs me.
But, since this is a DIGG thread, I'm suprised at the lack of conspiracy nuts mentioning "AIDS is a government created Weapon","AIDS doesn't exist, big pharma just wants you to believe it", Alex Jones Propiganda, and Idiocracy/Orwell. Atleast the "ZOMG AIDS IS A GAY DISEASE LOL" crowd hasn't dissapointed. Go DIGG go, stupidity for great justice! - nullcodes, on 05/20/2009, -4/+2There needs to be about another 100 billion poured into HIV fundamental research (more than 40 times what has been allocated to HIV basic research cumulatively since 1984 .. the rest of the money has gone to wasteful social programs) before we can have an effective vaccine/cure. And yeah I think any AIDS vaccine will also be a cure for it. Lessons learned would help make the concept of infectious disease history.
- nullcodes, on 05/20/2009, -4/+1I was joking .. trolling actually .. I was going to write "heterosexuality is the best vaccine" (though I know it's not true) just to rile up the proles .. but then I decided against it since I may want to run for president someday.
- Sejes89, on 05/20/2009, -4/+1Doesn't matter if they make a vaccine for AIDS, the problem is distribution in Africa. A lot has to be made and then sent out across Africa and it has to be at an affordable price so that the worst of the infected (usually the really poor) can obtain this vaccine. Don't bother making a vaccine that is going to be too expensive for the people who need it.
- Rain12913, on 05/20/2009, -7/+4Yes, but for the 30+ million people who aree HIV positive right now this is just the right time.
- nullcodes, on 05/20/2009, -5/+1That's why I used the word "more", I realize no vaccine is 100% effective.
- kevincredible, on 05/20/2009, -10/+5the only way to spread the vaccine is anal sex with the monkey.
