Digg linked to Cancer
/b/ linked to cancer killing Digg - unusualbob, on 01/11/2009, -6/+93What I am going to suspect is that really its not all that bad for you, its just that it leaves you temporarily more vulnerable to other carcinogens. Smokers use it in the morning before their early smokes and tada they have higher risks of cancer. Just watch what you put in your mouth after recently swishing.
Also, "800 Australians each year", um thats not that much. Lets assume that 1 in 5 people use mouthwash with alchohol. that means 4,201,462 australians use it. Now if 800 of them are affected that means your chances of getting cancer by using it are 0.019040991%. I would actually guess more than 1/5 people use it so the number is probably even lower.
This is all without pointing out that they didn't list how many of those 800 people were smokers/chewing tobacco users. I would guess somewhere around 90% of them are, maybe higher, so you can divide your chances by another factor of 10 if you aren't one. - homescrubb, on 01/10/2009, -11/+77Sensationalism much?
- laronde20, on 01/11/2009, -6/+72Anything can be linked to cancer.
THIS JUST IN
10 people who went outside discovered to have cancer. OUTDOORS LINKED TO CANCER! - regression, on 01/11/2009, -2/+63it's a good thing digg cures it every week.
- jasongbc, on 01/11/2009, -0/+48If your mouth feels "horrible for hours" after mouthwash, maybe you should go to your Dr. and get tested for pussymouth.
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -2/+41You forgot cancer after Jesus Christ.
- PoizonFrog, on 01/10/2009, -2/+40I'll miss the minty fresh smell emanating from the alcoholics at the office...
- willster580, on 01/11/2009, -0/+33That's like 3 things! *****.
- Sil369, on 01/11/2009, -0/+32i gargle with dirt
- MeatyMcBeef, on 01/11/2009, -5/+33Better solution. Suicide. Bad breath problem solved for good.
- inactive, on 01/11/2009, -2/+28that's what she said
- ObamaYouth, on 01/11/2009, -0/+25what about second hand mouthwashing?
- michaelpinto, on 01/10/2009, -5/+28This is quite depressing: "Acetaldehyde, a toxic by-product of alcohol that may accumulate in the oral cavity when swished around the mouth, is also believed to be carcinogenic. Listerine, the nation's biggest-selling mouthwash and a brand endorsed by the Australian Dental Association (ADA), contains as much as 26 per cent alcohol."
- MAGZine, on 01/11/2009, -3/+25Mouthwash? Cancer.
Smoking? Cancer.
Watermellon? Cancer.
Jesus christ. - inactive, on 01/12/2009, -0/+20If sex is linked to cancer, looks like I'll never get cancer.
- TheMachine1, on 01/12/2009, -0/+16Some health problems are also linked to gingivitis or periodontal disease. So you are screwed no many what. Evolution has figured out away to get your ass off this Earth to make room for new people.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancreatic_cancer#Pre ... - bhavinp, on 01/11/2009, -3/+18Interesting...they're afraid that putting this 26% alcohol liquid in our mouth and swishing it around and -spitting back out- will give us cancer.
But then they go to bars and get ***** by drinking 50% alcohol liquor...seems logical. - LowFuel, on 01/12/2009, -0/+15TOP 5 THINGS THAT CAUSE CANCER [PIC]
- EasyTigerDon, on 01/11/2009, -1/+16Terrible news stories cause cancer
- petershultz, on 01/11/2009, -0/+13amen.
- rwac, on 01/11/2009, -1/+14The solution is simple. Use an alcohol free mouthwash like biotene.
- exboy99, on 01/11/2009, -1/+13a few of the "studies" called for further studies. Independent or University studies, it's important to find out WHO is funding the study and how they did things. I'm not ready to accept this yet as evidence that Listerine is giving people mouth cancer. To throw out numbers like 800 Aussies a year with mouth cancer gets people to think that Mouthwash is killing 800 Aussies.... not true. Get the Mythbusters on this. Or better yet Penn and Teller to really drill down and tear this apart.
- deathfix, on 01/11/2009, -2/+14Yeah, really. I'm not going to start walking around with bad breath b/c of what a few scientists think they found.
- hymneforthedead, on 01/12/2009, -1/+12but the plastic that holds it releases endorphins that can give you breast cancer!! OOOHHH NOOOEEESS!!
- elliotys, on 01/12/2009, -2/+13You make some good points, but there is no hocus pocus here. Alcohol is a carcinogen, and when you swish it in your mouth daily, over the course of years, it can lead to cancer. Throat cancer is actually a common cancer in alcoholics, so this really isn't even a surprise.
- rumblestrut, on 01/11/2009, -2/+13I've never, and I mean NEVER had a dentist recommend mouthwash to me. Brushing and flossing yes, but never mouthwash.
- BossKey, on 01/11/2009, -0/+11You don't have to give it up if you don't want to.
As others have reported, you can use a non-alcoholic mouthwash. - reticulate, on 01/12/2009, -0/+11Gargling gravel is the only way to really feel like a man.
That and shaving with sandpaper. - cnot3, on 01/11/2009, -0/+10That probably causes cancer too. At least you'll have salty fresh breath, though.
- rock42, on 01/12/2009, -1/+10Person 1: Man... you have bad breath!
Person 2: Man... you have cancer! - inactive, on 01/12/2009, -0/+9Living can cause cancer too! We should stop reproducing before it's too late.
- crapolatime, on 01/11/2009, -1/+10I have enough toxic bad breath to counteract any Cancers.
- inactive, on 01/10/2009, -4/+13ETHANOL, ACETALDEHYDE!! ? Geez, i'm gonna just brush my teeth and hope that doesn't kill me :/
- jasongbc, on 01/11/2009, -2/+11Your gf says you need it.
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -1/+10http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naturalistic_fallacy
- Chris_F, on 01/12/2009, -0/+9Better watch out. Saltwater can kill the cells in your mouth/throat by causing extreme dehydration. Better quit that regiment too.
- RobynG7, on 01/12/2009, -3/+11And since when do you swish your liquor around for 30 seconds before swallowing it?
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -2/+10That's just tree-hugging propaganda. Brush your teeth.
- zuiquan, on 01/12/2009, -1/+9Damn you and your scientific figuring and stuff! How are we supposed to be scared when you make the odds seem ridiculously slight that we might be affected somehow by this plague that is killing literally *hundreds* of people every year? Hundreds, I say! That's way more than tens...
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -1/+9SELF CONTROL.
- schnikies79, on 01/12/2009, -0/+8The chemical is ethanol. You know, the alcohol you drink.
Fail much? - jasongbc, on 01/11/2009, -0/+8You didn't read the article, did you?
- casuallyevil, on 01/12/2009, -1/+9Since NOT using mouthwash is linked to a decreased risk of getting any, I'm going to take my chances with the Listerine.
- Twenty, on 01/12/2009, -0/+7We don't actually know what causes cancer, we're just using correlations.
- Chris_F, on 01/12/2009, -1/+8Maybe he's a Captain Morgan connoisseur?
- DickyT83, on 01/12/2009, -1/+8Fluoride also kills. Sorry charlie.
