Top 10 Mysteries of the Mind
livescience.com — Much of what we don't understand about being human is simply in our heads. The brain is a befuddling organ, as are the very questions of life and death, consciousness, sleep, and much more. Here's a heads-up on what's known and what's not understood about your

- dylangaine, on 02/08/2008, -0/+2i've always thought so. you can kinda tell by the difference in what we each find funny. for that matter, you may also say the same about different ethnic groups.

- BuzzDiggity, on 02/07/2008, -11/+3ah the mind is a complex creature... .but with valentine's day only a week or so around the bend... i ask... is it more complex than the heart? ..... (cheesy rating for this comment: 8.9)
- mnmleon, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4When it comes to women it is....
- PurpleSfinx, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2Actually apparently your cheesy rating for the comment is negative 7.
- Zaggynl, on 02/07/2008, -1/+2Referring to the heart as the source of feelings is so 4000 AD...

- norman619, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3Ignorance perhaps? This is not a mystery.
- SanDaiFez, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2It's all about inhibiting stress hormones (that usually cause harm just by themselves) and releasing dopamine/adrenaline and other well-being-inducing hormones.

- DonJohnTom, on 02/07/2008, -1/+9sometimes i wish humans were like bears, sleep during the winter and be awake in the summer but maybe thats just because i from somewhere thats pretty cold and i just finished shoveling a foot and a half of snow
- wafflez, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2if you lived in southern california you'd wish for quite the opposite I'm afraid.

it's 62 degrees right now - but it doesnt get below 100 for 3 months out of the year.

- FoxFaction, on 02/07/2008, -4/+1Consciousness is just an expression of a biological algorithm.
- instantrobotwar, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2and thoughts are just electrons following physical laws?
- norman619, on 02/07/2008, -1/+4Is it now? Nice that you "know" this while the greatest minds in the field still say it's a mystery. You better send them a memo and quick before they waste any more of their time!
- steveboutin, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2i'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one chief.
- PurpleSfinx, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3I disagree. I feel that consciousness is something other than biology, yet I strongly do NOT believe in the idea of a magical man in the sky.
- FoxFaction, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2Take a hallucinogen and come back to me on that one.
- koft, on 02/07/2008, -11/+4***** religion!
- manova, on 02/07/2008, -0/+9Right off the bat they say something inaccurate. In humans, your deepest sleep is Slow Wave Sleep or Stage 3 and 4 Sleep, not REM sleep.
- theotherdude, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4Glad someone else caught this, I was just going to comment on that error. REM is actually your shallowest stage of sleep.
- captmorgan555, on 02/07/2008, -1/+1Agreed, dreams take place at beginning and end of sleep. Stage 4 is deepest, stage 5 is a coma.
- mikewill7seven, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4And on that note how is Cryonics a mystery of the mind?
- theotherdude, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4Glad someone else caught this, I was just going to comment on that error. REM is actually your shallowest stage of sleep.
- MasterPlayer, on 02/07/2008, -0/+8Another mystery: Why am I on Digg when I have work to do?
- instantrobotwar, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1because mindless work can only take priority over curiosity concerning the big questions so much.
- chubbybubba, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3Lazy?
- nextexiter, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4Every time I see one of these Live Science ten lists I am shocked by how superficial and intentionally commercial they are. The pictures suck, the headlines are too-clever (not clever enough), and the summaries are brief and devoid of enlightenment. I truly loath the livescience.com "top-ten" posts over any of the other trends that hit page one.
- endlessoul, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Admittedly, they've gotten better. They've done a redesign and you don't have to navigate through each page for each list item. They're fluff pieces, yes. But they still provide food for thought.
- DSGalvin, on 02/07/2008, -1/+3If a person lives for 300 years without the worry of dying from old age, won't that just increase their chance of dying in some random accident?
- norman619, on 02/07/2008, -1/+1The short answer is yes.
- Archaic1, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1No, because previous outcomes have no effect on current or future outcomes in anything "random". Unless of course you factor in an older person being less able to react to, or recover from an accident.
- steveboutin, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1unless fate exists....
OH SNAP, I WENT THERE.- Archaic1, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1But fate is pre-determined, there's no element of randomness in it at all :)
- PoeticExplosion, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1For any given moment, that's true. But in aggregate, more time obviously leads to a higher chance of an accident. Denying that is like saying that flipping a coin more times doesn't increase your chances of one of them landing heads...
- steveboutin, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1unless fate exists....
- chubbybubba, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1In order to live to 300, we'd have to have found a way to cure cancer. Most "unhealthy" people die of cardiovascular disease, whereas most "healthy" people die of cancer. The healthier you are = the longer you live = the greater your chance of dying from cancer.
- Nissmo66, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Is #3 a brain issue?
#2 also for that matter... - bgfinkel, on 02/07/2008, -1/+4really really interesting. dugg.
- GregLoire, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3I could've saved myself some time if I'd have just read this before majoring in (cognitive) psychology. I mean, not that I didn't enjoy hearing variants of these 10 questions rehashed in repetitive lectures every day over the course of 4 years...
- merrymaker, on 02/07/2008, -1/+1What school? I'm sorry to hear that. Cog sci at ucsd went really well for me.
- csapdani, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3I'm fed up with all the articles being a TOP LIST
- steveboutin, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1true that.

- alpharaptor, on 02/07/2008, -2/+611 - an imaginary friend called god
- steveboutin, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6i hate clicking on an article thinking it might have some in-depth and relevant information, only to find out that it's a brief list of trivia and factoids.
buried. - heystoopid, on 02/07/2008, -1/+2Very nice !
- grimward, on 02/07/2008, -2/+1And people still claim that science is absolutely right, because it's based on logic.. and then the same science admits that they do not understand the brain which is responsible for said logic, it's hilarious :D
- axeman73, on 02/07/2008, -2/+3aren't we so lucky good on you people feeding off each others comments and a very special subject about life we are so lucky to live in a place that has a perfect atmosphere and we are the ones that give us our perfect atmosphere oops..... ok we try but we try to give the most that we can to our family eg the coal miner goes to work for food and so on but this is to big to be taken down by us it will all sort it's self out i believe we are all soldiers you are reading this i and all enjoy your company we are free to become what we want in this magical place called earth and me you and him deep down are scared of what is in the future because the future is so hard to see so keep working and keep loving life, family pets the outdoors even when it is cold that's the time to appreciate the warmth of our friend the sun don't forget the moon she loves it when you look at her that's why she smiles . we dream to correct the life we live in the day have you ever had that dream i have been here before you are not in tune with your dreams if you wake up and think about your dream there is a message for the future to correct something people call them selves psychic but what this is, is something much bigger then them it is a system and we all have our different lives so it is magical that who ever provides us with dreams cares about you me him and her we are one but we are many does that make sense oooh gee my chest is so light
- captmorgan555, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1wtf... was that
- alkajazz, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Looks like we have a regular Faulkner on our hands.
- SpacePoet, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2Holy crap dude, punctuation and a point would have been nice! Interesting read, though.
- rune420, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Stupid list. They didn't even get qualia in there.
- ketchupcorsair, on 02/07/2008, -0/+0Because Sony discontinued it in 2005.
- PizzaPops, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1I was hoping for something with a little more information and maybe some references but I got something dumbed down for the average elementary school kid...
- PurpleSfinx, on 02/07/2008, -0/+5Here's something I want to know really badly: Why do we have a super accurate body clock, that can make me wake up at 6:59 if I want to wake up at 7, yet I still need to wear a watch to know the time consciously? Why am I blocked from my own brain's infromation? DAMN YOU OPRESSIVE NEURONS.
- Entheoddity, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3How the hell is cryogenics a mystery of the mind? What a lame list.
- SpacePoet, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Well, I'd assume they are talking about trying to get the brain to freeze and thaw without permanent damage so we can live as a severed head in a bell jar like on Futurama!
- rpmking69, on 02/07/2008, -1/+2What about the voice in my head that tells me to burn things?
- alkajazz, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2How about the voice in my head that tells me to bury your comment?
- SpacePoet, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2I haven't used an alarm clock for over a year now. I've found that my internal clock is almost perfect and all I have to do is tell myself what time I need to be up, and it is usually within 5 minutes of that time i do. It has been a great addition to my life since I hate alarm clocks anyway, can't stand waking up to an annoying sound, probably why I'm still single too...
