- handheldchimp, on 08/25/2008, -2/+81One of the few "Top 10" lists that don't involve linux, iphone, or any sort of application for anything. This one is actually good to know, you never know when someone you know will become impaled or have a seizure.
- justsayknow, on 08/25/2008, -0/+36If only I'd known this last time I got impaled,
- hansk, on 08/25/2008, -0/+36The world needs someone with a bear cavalry tattoo.
- Halsfield, on 08/23/2008, -5/+42good list, although i thought the tooth in milk thing was a myth.
- ivansusanin, on 08/25/2008, -9/+37Guys should I get a bear cavalry tattoo? http://www.bruddabear.com/photo/BearCavalry.jpg ? seriously
- ch1pm0nk, on 08/23/2008, -5/+32Good one, the nosebleed I always leaned back for.
- Velnich, on 08/25/2008, -0/+26Hell, I didn't even know living teeth could be re implanted once knocked out.
- VenDrake, on 08/25/2008, -0/+22Don't cook bacon sans pants.

I'm just sayin'. - KloroFormd, on 08/25/2008, -0/+22Curiosity is getting the better of me...

WTF... - handheldchimp, on 08/25/2008, -0/+21So during my calculus class I should call 911...
- MisterOh, on 08/25/2008, -1/+22Head to the hospital for any burns to the eyes, mouth, or genital areas
OMG. - algaeturd, on 08/25/2008, -0/+20FTA:
"Then be sure to bring the bag and ice to the emergency room. The patient will be going into surgery, so he's best off with an empty stomach."
So if you cut your finger off while chopping onions, don't stick around to grill the fajitas and scarf some down....is that what they're saying? - AgentMull, on 08/25/2008, -0/+20Thats nice and all, but what does that have to do with first aid? And you didn't even spell Thiomersal right.
- RyeBrye, on 08/25/2008, -0/+19"And when else should you call 911? Whenever you see or experience chest pain, fainting, confusion, uncontrollable bleeding or shortness of breath. The medics can get to work on arrival."
So... any time you are confused you are supposed to dial 911?
... now I'm confused. - djcap, on 08/25/2008, -1/+18I like the article, but I'm fighting the urge to say "but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night."
- freehunter, on 08/25/2008, -0/+17Sounds like my Saturday night.
- DforSpiD, on 08/25/2008, -1/+16"And when else should you call 911?"
When I'm in the USA? - jmp478, on 08/25/2008, -0/+12"Who put cookies in this mouth?
You're not supposed to do that..." - numb, on 08/25/2008, -0/+12I thought they changed it to 0118 999 881 999 119 7253 for the brits :)

- twigboy, on 08/25/2008, -0/+12FTA: basically no matter what, just go to the ER
- dilbert, on 08/25/2008, -0/+12"...Call 911."
Thats 112 for us Europeans. - Thestormo, on 08/25/2008, -0/+12There are levels of pain.
There is the: Wow, that hurts when I put my foot down on it, I probably shouldn't use that foot.
There there is the: 'Holy jesus mother of god I feel like I am dying' as you are curled up on the floor crying in pain.
You're probably fine to stick it out thought first one but I'd go to the doctor for the second one. - theodorex, on 08/25/2008, -1/+12Whatever you guys do; don't google saline.
- Smyley, on 08/25/2008, -0/+11Call 911.
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -1/+12For #10, don't put anything under the seizing person's head.
- davidrools, on 08/25/2008, -0/+11I think you should join/form a bear cavalry. Only the, get the tattoo to remember the experience.
- pr0lixity, on 08/25/2008, -0/+10most teenage boys would have to call 911 when around girls...
- orlyfactor, on 08/25/2008, -0/+10I had my tooth knocked out when I was in the 5th grade. It happened while I was sledding. My mom called the dentist and had the people in my neighborhood look for the tooth. Miraculously they found it and the dentist had my mom put it back into the gaping hole (no anesthetic, not even a stiff drink!). I don't remember much about that day, but all I know is that it hurt like a son of a bitch. Unfortunately after a year and a half or so, the tooth died and had to be replaced, but I always have a gross story to tell people if the need arises.
- emt1451, on 08/25/2008, -0/+9Good story...
I am an EMT, I'm 20, and I look young. We had a rescue call in my city and I was closer than the ambulance was, so I went straight to the scene. A woman was unresponsive on a sidewalk. As soon as I kneeled down to assess her, the police officer, who was doing literally nothing, asked "Are you an EMT?". I responded "yes" but I should've said "no, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night..." - pr0lixity, on 08/25/2008, -1/+10medical advice... from a cartoon engineer?
- EthosProduction, on 08/25/2008, -1/+9Placing a shirt, or a single layer of blanket or something under their head to take the 'edge' off the hardness of a very hard cement floor is different than cushioning the head with something that would elevate it, like a pillow.
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8I never understood leaning back for nose bleeds. Doesn't the blood just run down your throat into your stomach? Why would you want that?
- vladsmiljanic, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8well that's pretty counter productive
- Patrickdnj, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8Interesting............
Continue? - SaintStryfe, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8very true. The rule with seizures is that you want to let the person deal with it - you help them down (so they don't fall hard), you roll them onto their side (so if they vomit or if saliva builds up it won't choke them), and you keep people away (so they don't knock into the person if thier limbs flail). Of course, call 911 immediately then. Most Grand Mal seizures will pass in minutes, but you don't know if the person has a seizure condition or if it's a sudden symptom of a serious problem, so call to be safe.
As always, the most important rules are to stay calm and know your procedures. Don't be afraid, be active toward fixing the problem. - SeaFour, on 08/25/2008, -1/+95) Profit.
- tidu, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8it's okay, you're just swallowing 10% of your blood.
- VenDrake, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8It's amazing how a severed finger resembles a slice of fajita meat.
- handheldchimp, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8Seriously, if something went into me/through me, the first thing to run through my mind is, "OMG GET IT THE ***** OUT!!!"
Leaving it in and then making the item stable is the last thing on my list. I don't want to have to drive all the way to the hospital worrying about whether or not the pipe in my stomach is comfortable or not... - rdmorley, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7Should I really call 911 if suffering from confusion? This seems to happen to me quite a lot, then again, I guess I do drink and smoke pot a little too much...maybe they meant this for the "other" guy
- T440, on 08/25/2008, -1/+8That goes against just about everything I've known about someone having a seizure. I remember being in a class in high school and sitting beside a guy who suffered from seizures quite often and even the teachers would tell us to place something soft underneath his head if he starts convulsing.
Now I can completely understand why you wouldn't try to restrain someone but even with Saint Stryfe's comment, I fail to see why you shouldn't try and place something soft under one's head. Especially if you're in a room with solid floors (i.e. highschool). - fuzzybeard, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7Vampire?
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6Thanks for posting twice, you rock!
- fuzzybeard, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6addendum: Don't GIS "Saline" with safe search off! "What has been seen, cannot be unseen" really applies applies in this case!
- feliks2, on 08/25/2008, -2/+8why?
- Wakkyweed, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6Not only can they be implanted, it doesn't even have to be your own tooth. Dentists started messing around with implanting human and animal teeth into other people a few hundred years ago.
- UNCsucks, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6As an EMT, I slightly disagree with number 7. While tourniquets aren't the first choice in dealing with blood loss, they are certainly a viable option if direct pressure to the vessel and / or pressure points (spots where the proximal vessel is close to bone) won't work.
A tourniquet will only start to cause tissue damage after it's left on for 6-7 hours. If properly applied, they can be very useful.
In situations where a tourniquet is required, tissue damage is really the least of your worries. Exsanguination and shock will kill you much more quickly. - scoot87, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6Peaches n' Cream
- doublej42, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5why, why couldn't I just take the advice. learn from others pain, don't do it people just don't.
