- ideadude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Nice list. I'm going to make sure all of these are represented in the WineLog DB. I'll tag them with "2006ws100" for easy reference.
http://www.winelog.net/wines/2006ws100
I've tagged just the first 5 so far, but the rest should be finished by tonight. We'll also add some code in there to have them sorted by the WS list order, etc. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Cool, next time I'm out with a lady or at a business meeting, I can act like I know what I'm talking about.
- ejconcept, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Once I saw this wino who was eating grapes, and I said, "Dude, you have to wait". -Mitch Hedberg
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7had to give you a digg for that for the amount of times i've clicked on a heading with "wine" in it and gone, "wtf is this?!"
shows you how much i know about linux. but i like the penguin. - mennis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Sadly, none of these come in a box. So inconvenient!
- ideadude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Here's a link to the list on WineLog, sorted by WS Top 100 rank:

DB updating is going slow, but should be done by the time this reaches the front page. Man, we really need an intern (or a mechanical turk API) to do this kind of work for us. ;) - Joe091, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Yellowtail Shiraz!
- ideadude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7100 bottles in 100 days!
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Someone post a list of the TOP 100 under $30 please!
- LarianLeQuella, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Looks like I have a 100 bottles of wine to buy and drink now!
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4for $10 rosemount shiraz used to be my standby. readily available at your local grocery store.
- cosmicpoet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@aurrea
They score them blindly but rank them based on several factors; quality, distribution, price/value, historical performance, etc. also, they ask the question "does this wine represent the area it's from and the varietal well?" if the answer is yes, and the other criteria is met favorably, they get ranked more highly and don't necessarily corresspond to the score. - origamidoc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Link to Wine Spectator's daily picks under $15:
http://www.winespectator.com/Wine/Daily_Wine_Picks_Category/0,3658,15_1,00.html? - sbovisjb1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5for some reason i was thinking of the windows app emulator for linux... shows how much of a nerd i am.
- seraphzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One of my favorites of the year: Ten Mile by Nine North Wines in California. It's a blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane and Barbera, according to the website (the bottle just lists it as "proprietary red"). Usually around $13/bottle, but if you live in PA, it was $11 last weekend.
This year's Beaujolais Nouveau wasn't bad either... - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And, yes, replying to myself is poor, but I wanted to add some affordable wines from down under that are on the list:
Kim Crafword Sauvignon Blanc: #40, 92 rating, $17. (From NZ)
Jacob's Creek Shiraz South Australia Reserve: #64, 91 rating, $13
Shaw & Smith Chardonnay Adelaide Hills #95, 93 rating, $29 - aurrea, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Anyone else wondering why the "score" doesn't have a direct correlation to the "rank"?
- drey999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Jacob's Creek is on there - #64. had it last night. not too shabby.

oh and the top 100 is the editors picks not based on the scores...
quote
"We then narrowed the list down based on four criteria: quality (represented by score); value (reflected by release price); availability (measured by case production or cases imported); and an X-factor we call excitement. But no equation determines the final selections: These choices reflect our editors' judgment and enthusiasm about the wines we tasted." - CrashKC, on 08/25/2008, -1/+3Anyone notice that #3 is Chateau Leoville? I didn't know Labporte made wine too!
http://leoville.com/ - Nitro420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The absolute best $10 wine in my opinion is Ken Forrester Petit Chenin. It is delicious if you can find it. It is a white wine from South Africa and is very similar to a Pinot Grigio.
- jzp-digg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Of course, the most important measure of a "good wine" is if you like it. Complete lack of California Zinfandel, Italian Sangiovese, etc show a dislike of bold flavors.
- ideadude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Parasocks, thanks for the feedback. We have a ton of data. One of our greatest challenges is how to present this in a way that is useful (and apparent). I guess you saw the "type" dropdown but not the "variety".
The WineLog search is pretty powerful. Try typing any variety or region into the search bar.
If you'd like to browse the wines by variety or region, try these links:
Varieties: http://www.winelog.net/varieties
Regions: http://www.winelog.net/regions
And, btw, we implemented a "sort by price" feature last nice. It ties into our affiliates to get the price (some of which are much lower than what Wine Spectator was quoting). Try this link to find the cheapest wines of the top 100:
http://www.winelog.net/wines?q=2006ws100&order=price
AND thanks for not digging down my comments. They could be seen as spam. While we are getting some traffic bla bla bla from these links, I'm posting them here because I think our site is useful. Thanks again. - aurrea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3100 bottles in 25 days for me.....
- JasonHofmann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"The score doesn't have a direct correlation to the rank" because it is a list of the 100 "most exciting" wines of the year. They take into consideration a number of factors, including price. That alone would make it a "bang for the buck" ranking in which there would be no direct correlation.
- CyBrShRk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Where's the Two-Buck Chuck? Is this contest rigged?!?! :-)
- pevail, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Where are the good $10.00 wines?
I find that Austalian wines offer the most bang for the buck. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Winelog looks pretty cool, but I think it falls a bit short in the categorization. Just too simple to be effective. One big category called "red" doesn't really do it much justice. There's so many different wine types, I think that needs to be paramount to really make it a valuable resource. Anyways just wanted to be constructive from one website owner to another, and it does make me want to go look at the empty bottles I got. :)
- Anathama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If you can find it, snag a bottle of Gladiator Cycle's 2004 Syrah. It took the best wine in the Wines of the World competition here in LA. Beat out 4000 other wines. I work at Bevmo and we sell it for $9.99. The 2005 is really good too.
- therippa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yellow Tail is interesting...
My ex's mom was going to be opening a bank in Napa valley, so she started studying up on the wine. Turns out Yellow Tail spent years doing taste tests and specifically grow their grapes and make their wine to appeal what the masses like in wine.
So, it's like the people's wine...and priced as such. Great choice when you don't feel like going crazy. - canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3 if anyone can do a sortable excel sheet by price, region, color, variety, etc, i will be in your eternal debt. i'm too much of a lazy drunk.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yellow Tail? I'd rather lick a bum's nutsack.
- sgtawol, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Ummm yea...
How bout beers? - joefrank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wahoo! Wine.com is carrying some of them as well:
http://www.wine.com/wineshop/product_list.asp?N=7155+1077
The Benton Lane Pinot is very nice. - bigg08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Many of the comments here are right on. It's kind of like a beauty contest. The Spectator has a particular style of wines that they like and it's often not "typical" of the regions from where the wines are made. That said it definitely gets the wine world excited and that's a good thing.
G - Coridan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You take one down, smash it on ImTheDarkCyde's face, 99 bottles of wine on the wall...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you beat me to it
- ideadude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wine is very web 2.0. Haven't you heard?
http://www.winetwo.com - pevail, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yellow Tail is quite popular here in Edmonton.Actually, all Australians are flying off the shelves.
- cosmicpoet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ahh, the trick is to buy wine at auction websites like winecommune.com (I don't have a piece of their business, so this isn't a promotion for them). If you know a little bit about wine you can find some great deals. I consistently get pretty highly-scoring wines for much less than I would at a wine shop.
To answer your question, though, you can find most store-bought wine is drinkable and the ones mentioned above (Rosemount, Jacob's Creek) are good value wines. - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Nice digg. Ignoring some of the above, there are some wines on the top 10 list for under 30 bucks. Well worth the effort to find them. Thank God for wine.com.
Oh, and for pevail, there are quite a few Australian wines on there. - Dog_Paddle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1hserjsreju
- cannucklehead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0There was some mention of under $15, here you might find some thrify choices (blackouts expected)
http://www.bumwine.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2shouldn't there be a list of reds, and a list of whites ?
- Skab, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1INGELNOOK! 10$ = gallon its like boonesfarm but without the heart burn and twice the dignity!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3one hundred bottles of wine on the wall, one hundred bottles of wine...
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Will I be the only college student drinking fine wines as opposed to cheap beer? I already plan on this to "celebrate" my first day @ college http://www.beringer.com/beringer/catalog/view_product.jsp?product_id=1348&cat_id=1032
- Oxygen, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4My wine from a box.
- fatcat, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2This wine tastes nutty, no it tastes like ass
- 1021, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0So can I run windows programs easier now? ... oh wait...
