- SteelFrog, on 06/16/2008, -1/+33Well, duh. Inactivity = health problems. What a stupid article.
- timusca, on 06/16/2008, -2/+31This just in: Children that watch anywhere NEAR 5 hours of TV per day have ***** parents.
- SQFreak, on 06/16/2008, -2/+26Correlation != Causation.
- slvrbullet87, on 06/16/2008, -1/+19Maybe they should get outside the house and run around a little bit, you know give their lungs a workout before they go to *****
- lesty420, on 06/16/2008, -0/+9Chase your kids with a bat. It's the only way to keep them physically healthy
- MozillaFirefox, on 06/16/2008, -2/+11If this was true, everyone would have asthma. But it's not
Also, I have trouble breathing when running, and I go on the computer a lot... - A5204, on 08/13/2009, -0/+7Scientists have a frog on a table. They say "Jump!" and the frog jumps.
The scientists cut off one of the frog's legs. They say "Jump!" and the frog still manages to jump.
The scientists cut off the frog's other leg. They say "Jump!" and the frog lies there.
Conclusion: Frogs with no legs are deaf. - lothar250, on 06/16/2008, -1/+7FIVE hours?? You gotta be kidding me!
- phatboyslim, on 06/16/2008, -0/+5Wow, one of those capt. obvious studies. Kids who aren't active are more likely to become overweight, which has already been tied to asthma. I bet they have a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and poor chances of getting laid later in life but I suppose they'll have to wait another 10 years to follow-up on that one.
- DonutGuy, on 06/16/2008, -0/+5It obviously depends on the type of TV you're watching. HDTVs are almost certain to give asthma
- inactive, on 06/16/2008, -4/+7What if you watch a lot of television while smoking weed?
- Revolutionista, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4Developing asthma is the least of my worries if I am watching five hours of television a day.
- diggzoid, on 06/16/2008, -0/+3I'd be more worried about brain decay than asthma watching that much TV!
- MrVeal, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4"Studies show that birth causes death." i hate these types of reports... just live and let die.
- Smaulz, on 06/16/2008, -0/+3Dugg for the D&C reference
- handheldchimp, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2Hmm...so inactivity causes problems then, huh? So if I sit in a chair at school for multiple hours then school is a health risk!!!!!!1!!
- eSentrik, on 06/16/2008, -2/+4story of my life
- edailing, on 06/16/2008, -1/+3Crappy eating habits is the big issue. Watching too much TV serves to promote a sedentary lifestyle that prevents people from working off empty calories.
- dOOBiEx213, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2Studies show 73% of studies are *****.
- Willravel, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2Correct title: "Sedentary lifestyle may cause asthma". I've got an exercise bike in front of my TV, thus negating the entire TV to asthma connection.
- edailing, on 06/16/2008, -1/+3Just because not everyone has asthma doesn't mean the study is invalid. Watching TV won't give you asthma, but according to this it will simply increase the risk.
- bronxelf, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2Correlation is not causation. FFS. A more informative study could show how how socioeconomics are related to hours watching television, since that affects where people live (clean air? Not clean air? next to a highway?), how much exercise they may get (is it safe to send the kids out to play? Is there adequate supervision for play? Or is it a case of "they're safer in the house watching tv".) and what kind of diet they consume.
If they live in an area with poor air conditions, and it's not safe to play outside for whatever reason, so they spend more time watching TV and eating a poor diet.,then guess what? They're also more likely to develop respiratory problems.
It's not the TV, folks. It's the money(or lack of it). - ashfish, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2Another ground breaking article from the Telegraph...Here's a tip parents, let your kids go outside. Really, its good for them. Let them run around like, well, children. I remember when we used to get kicked out of the house and told to play outside after watching maybe an hour of tv. What the hell are parents doing these days?
- bdfariello, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2Faulty number juggling is also to blame.
Did you know that an increase from 0.45% (I assume you meant % rather than actual 0.45) to 1% is an increase of 122%?
The More You Know. - chrissku, on 06/16/2008, -1/+3Too much of ANYTHING is a risk.
- Zippo, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2This has nothing to do with TV and probably everything to do with environment.
Children who have inactive and lazy parents are probably more likely to live in unfavorable breathing conditions. And since their parents are inactive, so are the kids. What do most inactive kids do? Watch a lot of TV. - sandiegodude, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2"Children who watch more than five hours of television a day are at an increased risk of developing [a fat ass and multiple chins]"
fixed. - ouzome, on 06/16/2008, -1/+4You'd be a lot cooler if you did
- Xyc0, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2Of course, one could consider that kids with asthma are more likely to be inactive due to their health?
- 4LeggedtriPod, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Dear Lord, what next?
- TheHim, on 06/16/2008, -2/+3All this number juggling is exactly what's wrong with our society.
"Did you know that food ingredient XYZ increases your risk of heart disease by 23%" - Yes, from 0.45 to 1% over the course of your lifetime...
All this blatant circumvention of common sense is making mental (and eventually physical) cripples out of people. Buried without having read it. - brandonelliott, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1man, whoever wrote the title for submitting that article would make an excellent summarizer. i read it, without reading it.
- seattlephantom, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1TV doesn't cause it, but it can exacerbate it I think is the point. Which is true. The problem is when you are inactive due to asthma, and your parents notice that TV is one of the only things that makes you happy, they are going to let you watch as much as you want. A better option is to stop insisting that everyone be able to run, and teach them how to sing. Proper breathing techniques are what has helped my lungs heal from a childhood of asthma and television.
- swedishfishing, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1i wish that were true... i run 4 times a week, 30 or more minutes per session, and my asthma has only gotten worse. it really sucks, but unfortunately there really isn't any cure for asthma
- sdcarter, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1It's not the television, it's the sitting on your increasingly fat ass. Trust me, I speak from experience.
Damn you, after-school cartoons and sitcoms. Damn you! - maskedm564, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Even sex?
- Sulzer, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1live healthier -- your asthma will get better if you do. go walk a mile or something; it's easy and it only takes 15 minutes. your body will thank you for it
- jblade, on 06/16/2008, -2/+3"Sucks to your asthmar!" - R.I.P. Piggy
- Sulzer, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1my god, i'll alert the press, you guys start notifiying the world's leaders. and for christ's sake, get these scientists a ***** medal.
- leerayIG88, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1What happens if you smoke crack? :( I hope it's good news for me. asfdsf3!@#!
- binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1only when you crush and snort it.
- Rapter09, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Now over to Ollie Williams for our Blackuweather forecast!
- wynja, on 06/16/2008, -1/+1Does this surprise you with the recent rash of articles talking about the health risks of the fire retardant material they coat the insides of TVs and couches with? Come on people. 2 + 2 = 4. This is not rocket science :)
- sonicm, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1"Buried without having read it."
ure 2 kool!!1 - IronyInPlastic, on 06/16/2008, -0/+0In that case, ~80% of the world will have asthma at some point between computers, TV and sleeping.
- itchie, on 06/16/2008, -0/+0Agreed....
Society has gotten too lazy and will result in us becoming weaker in future generations. - yggdrasil255, on 06/17/2008, -0/+0or could it be....
that you'd rather just chill out and watch cartoon network rather than run a marathon when you CAN'T ***** BREATHE!
