- Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I don't know. Couldn't this be effect rather than cause?
- nesagwa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10So getting enough sleep is bad while not sleeping enough is good.
Awesome. This insomnia is going to save my ***** life. - almostmanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Or even similar causes. Maybe stress causes them to sleep more AND develop Parkinson's. Maybe the people working night shifts didn't have to do as much.
Don't they make journalists take introductory statistics courses? Jeez. - gridrunner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Sweet. More World of Warcraft then ;)
- asphinx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3give them credit for motivating 80000 nurses to work night shifts...
- Rinnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd still go on the side of 6-8 hours. Looks like Parkinson's may not be the only increased risk with too much sleep: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/03/060327084916.htm
- almostmanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+360% more likely is different than a 60% chance.
- DucoNihilum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love the irony in this... I just saw a digg that basically said too LITTLE sleep causes obesity... I guess if you don't sleep EXACTLY 8 hours a day you're totally screwed, eh?
- nerdgoturd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2let me get this straight. too much sleep raises my chances of getting Parkinson's disease, but not enough sleep can cause obesity and other illnesses. is there some happy median?
- DarkHack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So is 10hrs sleep bad? LOL
- TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So wait, *seven* hours of sleep *also* elevated the risk of Parkinson's? So even if you sleep LESS than the suggested eight hours, you have an elevated risk of Parkinson's? That means everyone getting a "full nights rest" is at an elevated risk for Parkinson's. I think the study (or story) is a tad flawed, if completing a normal biological process can result in Parkinson's. Essentially you have no choice in the matter--deprive your body and mind of the sleep it requires, or have an elevated risk of Parkinson's. Sounds screwy to me. :-/
- Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No sorry. 8 hours precisely is on the overlap region. You'll be fat and get Parkinson's.
- coolmos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wake up! Wake up! You had your 8 hours of sleep!
(shakes subject heavily)
Cause? Effect? Huh? - aromatase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Correlation does not equal causation. Perhaps the need for more sleep is am early symptom of Parkinson's or "pre-parkinson's".
- Elohir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My thoughts exactly.
- DangerMouse9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the weight gain is probably caused by "I can't sleep.... I'm up and about... now I"m hungry and will have my 4th - 6th meal of the day"
Too much sleep, not enough sleep are both bad for you. I believe it was an article in Psychology Today from a few years back that was mentioning this, basically equating too much sleep to depression/boredom and not enough to stress/etc.
The answer to not enough sleep is church, they even had a sign promoting it saying "Trouble sleeping? We have sermons" either that, or listen to some Economics books on tape (or maybe some webcasts from Microsoft) those will help you sleep from the boredom.
Too much sleep... the answer is online gaming. :)
So, the perfect blend is to listen to those Econ/webcasts while playing your online games and that'll net you the right amount of hours of sleep. :) - babelfishi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Too much sleep = More chance of getting Parkinson's Disease
Not enough sleep = More chance of being obese (http://digg.com/health/Sleep_Deprivation_Doubles_Risks_of_Obesity)
Now what? - DangerMouse9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd say it's not irony but it's a Catch-22.
Either you're fat or you can make killer martinis/mixed drinks... - IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1..and in other news, not enough sleep may significantly increase risk of becoming ill to other more common sicknesses.
- Helicobacter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOL My grandma already had parkinsons, and I sleep 12h/d during my summer break
- cwhill103, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not sure how much I believe this study. My father has parkinsons and I know for a fact before he was actually diagnosed with the disease he would have to take naps during the day because the symptoms began to cause this. Later he was diagnosed with it. The disease causes the body to tire out.

- lubos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol :-)
- tejon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only this morning on the news I heard too little sleep may constitute towards weight gain so is there a perfect number of hours to sleep?
http://www.gm.tv/index.cfm?articleid=21570 - masscrazy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im sure most of the 80000 worked at night anyway.
So out of 80,000 only 181people got the disease?! Whats that, about 0.2% and they've concluded that most people who get more than 8 hours sleep have a 60% chance of developing the disease. And those working at night have less chance of developing this disease meaning what, they wake up at normal time around 8am and dont ever sleep? Or because they work nights they dont sleep as much, what? Because sleeping is sleeping no matter what time of the day.
A study as long as this seems hard to question, but it all seems to have gotten out of hand.
