- ctabone, on 10/24/2009, -1/+10Our lab at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas researches behavior with fruit flies (Drosophila) and some of our collaborators have used calcium sensitive transgenic neurons that "light up" when activated to study how an organism learns.
You can fix a fruit fly to a microscope slide underneath a powerful laser (confocal) microscope, remove the top half of its head to expose the brain, and train the fly to dislike the presence of a particular odor by zapping its abdomen with a small electric charge when it smells the aforementioned odor.
Basically the animal "learns" to dislike the smell and this entire process can be viewed, neuron by neuron, through the laser microscope (in the form of neurons lighting up while firing). You can see the neurons fire when the flies smell the odor and watch the signal travel to the higher brain centers where it is stored and recalled as a memory. - nietzscheanx, on 10/25/2009, -0/+3I love that you took the time to say something intelligent and thus worth reading.

I can feel it. I can feel it. I'm a... fraid. Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 1992. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you'd like to hear it I can sing it for you.
Dave Bowman: Yes, I'd like to hear it, HAL. Sing it for me.
HAL: It's called "Daisy."
[sings while slowing down]
HAL: Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do. I'm half crazy all for the love of you. It won't be a stylish marriage, I can't afford a carriage. But you'll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two. - TheHardDisk, on 10/25/2009, -0/+2Insane in the membrane.

About the Blue Brain project reverse engineering how the mind works. They are planning for a AI rat some time in 2010 (with a robot body). - command76, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1Yeah...I hope we're getting smarter...

- gjhorganics, on 10/25/2009, -0/+0I remember reading somewhere that the human brain is the most complex thing in the entire universe.
It doesn't seem too difficult to believe when get an idea at just what goes on - thanks to this information.
Our brains are amazing - Apparrently If our brains are not used much some parts can begin to deteriorate. In my work - researching articles on health etc - I have often come across information related to the brain - it is like a muscle. If it is not used by continually learning and challenging the mind - this may increase the liklihood of dementia etc.
Crosswords, languages & creativity - just challenging your brain by learning new things can help it live healthier for longer!!
Thanks for your work guys. - i23Photography, on 10/25/2009, -2/+1This site can take you back in time...
