- Akairenn, on 04/09/2009, -0/+47Awesome story.
Didn't change my view on plastic surgeons. Not sure why it would. Was I supposed to dislike them for some asinine reason before reading? :p - laughtears, on 04/08/2009, -1/+29uh, changed my outlook on LIFE. period. amazing
- JonnyIsElectric, on 04/09/2009, -4/+28they are amazing people. they make boobies bigger.
- bubbakja, on 04/09/2009, -0/+20OMFG a website that allows to switch to a single page view and a good story !?!
- mrnathan, on 04/09/2009, -0/+19agreed.
I dont dislike any kind of surgeon ... what a ridiculous title. What, like before this story plastic surgeons only operated on skinny chicks that wanted massive boobs? Give me some credit. - kanabal, on 04/09/2009, -1/+17This brought a tear to my eye.
Brilliant doctors doing something good because it was right. Gives me faith in the human race. - azureskies88, on 04/09/2009, -0/+15What exactly was my previous view of plastic surgeons assumed to be?
- sweeneyowns, on 04/09/2009, -0/+13make sure to check the surgery slideshow...awesome work by the surgeons
- phosphite, on 04/09/2009, -0/+10You should visit that plastic surgeon, he might be able to give you a second eye so you're not a cyclops!
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -2/+12That's a nice thought. You wouldn't want to be burdened, would you.
Consider the ramifications if your parents hadn't wanted an ass-clown for a child. - Mystyrys, on 04/09/2009, -1/+10There was a link at the bottom of the first page to view the article on a single page.
- Lykil, on 04/09/2009, -2/+8dugg you up, though I've always thought those plastic boobies look strange and unattractive.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6Yeah same here. I had no previous negative view of plastic surgeons. They are doctors like any other and like this story shows, not all their work involves enlarging the breasts of some rich woman.
Most of the issues surrounding plastic surgery were usually the patients fault, either getting too many surgeries in one place or doing something even more stupid and going to an unlicensed surgeon. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5wow.. I cant imagine being that brave. Bravo to her and her parents for not being like the douche 2 posts above, and sticking it out, that makes them wonderful, wonderful people.
Great of the doctors too, tho without wanting to take away from the story, that treatment would have been free anyway in most other developed countries. - borez, on 04/09/2009, -1/+6Did you hear about the Plastic surgeon who sat on a radiator and melted.
On a more serious note, great slideshow. - kanabal, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4Make sure you read part two as well
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-ana6-2009a ... - SniperZero, on 04/09/2009, -2/+6Good article but 7 pages is a bit much when they showed the same images on every page and spaced it out a bit much.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4Of course an LA paper would run a story justifying plastic surgeons.
/I kid - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4Would be funny if it weren't for the fact that just standing in regular sunlight doesn't get hot enough to melt plastic.
- kelalo, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4Except that there isn't a cure for the common cold.
- brainflakes, on 04/09/2009, -1/+5There's a big difference between plastic surgery for medical reasons and plastic surgery for purely minor cosmetic reasons
- funklor, on 04/09/2009, -1/+5Nope. Didn't change anything. She doesn't legitimize the whole field, just as Joan Rivers doesn't delegitimize the whole field. It's a mixed bag.
- VinnieDaMac, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3In general, I agree with you, probably could have been nicer about it. Even in the article, the parents planned on having at least 4 kids but had second thoughts after seeing the life Ana had to live.
- kelalo, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3Dumbass. The story talks about how they got green cards, and near the end of the story Ana becomes a citizen. RTFA and don't insert unrelated talking points into a story like this.
- HurricaneDC, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3huh
I kinda always knew that plastic surgeons also did stuff for medical reasons. Not just for giving us excessively firm bosoms. - Biscuitz, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3I was about to say the same thing. Good thing I read comments before I say something!
Honestly, my issue was never with plastic surgeons. I've had to have skin graphs before so I know they do good things, it's the people who want surgery when they look perfectly fine that irritate me! - Biscuitz, on 04/09/2009, -2/+5Please, never have sex.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4They make them smaller too you know...
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -2/+5as was said before, you wouldnt want to be burdened with stigma now would you. downs kids have wonderful lives, its only pricks like you who put them down, literally in your case.
quality of life =/= quality of body, if you couldnt love a child with downs how do you expect to love any child. you should love you children now before they are even born, when you grow up past 12 years you will realize this - needlesurfer, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Nobody I think has it against plastic surgeons, they do quite an awesome job.
People have it against plastic surgery when it is used for adhering to unrealistic beauty criterias. Like in everything it is not the use of it that is wrong it is the abuse of it, and abusing might be just using it once, but for the wrong reasons.
But on plastic surgeons: they are a mix of engineer, artist and doctor, I actually deeply admire them, the skills and knowledge required to do this is nothing short of amazing. - robinthehood, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2what kind of ignorant moron would not know that Plastic Surgeons actually do a lot of work concerning noble causes such as burn victims or animal attacks, or in the case of this woman, a genetic disease?
Ya, agreed that sometimes it's nice to see a story like this get the light of day but if it's changing someones view on plastic surgeons that person is a moron to begin with.
Digg me down, I don't give a *****. A spade is a spade. If you didn't realize before this article that Plastic Surgeons are responsible for a lot of good, not just boob jobs and face lifts on rich women, you're a ***** idiot. - JonnyIsElectric, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2someone obviously hasnt seen superbad
- nerdjnerdbird, on 04/09/2009, -1/+3Even if you are ugly as ***** you can now appreciate your face being symmetrical.
- smemily, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Though we can argue it's overused, it's often cosmetic surgery (as in facelifts and boob jobs) that financially supports charitable work of surgeons, and drives advancements in technique that help patients such as Ana.
- DavidTurnbull, on 04/09/2009, -1/+3It'd be stupid to be against plastic surgery as a whole, I think people are against the way some people use it to look "younger" and "prettier".
- average650, on 04/09/2009, -1/+3despite her problems and how much she hates it, I'm sure she's still glad she's alive.
- JonnyIsElectric, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1http://instantrimshot.com/
- rmathieson, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2Touching stuff. Puts a bit of perspective on my own *****.
- phosphite, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2there's something to be said about a good plastic surgeon. there are a lot of unfortunate girls in porn with Dr. Nick style boob jobs.
- nepidae, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1Well, I would have to say that an ignorant moron would be that type of person. A better question is how someone could be so ignorant.
- DIAF, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1i think in certain situations, I agree with you. But unfortunately many extreme disorders happen to otherwise healthy looking babies long after they are born.
- 1hrSleep, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1I've had my share of plastic surgeons for reconstructive surgery and would never think their work to be "shallow" or any less important than other surgeons.
They've affected my life tremendously in a positive way (and for free too, in Canada). - ichunxo, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1... I wish I'd read the comments before clicking the link.
- JonnyIsElectric, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2why? thats like slapping god in the face!
- Boxer47, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1Here's a great story about a plastic surgery victim brought to court for speaking out about her bad results: http://cms.ibj.com/ASPXPages/6iframes/FrontEndArti ...
- basickly, on 04/09/2009, -1/+1He wouldn't have been born, and so he wouldn't exist. He wouldn't know he was ever supposed to exist, and neither would anyone else.
So there would be no ramifications, except that the world would change in the same way it does as a result of any of the thousands of decisions one might make in a day.
Also, if his parents hadn't aborted him, the child they raised instead wouldn't have had the opportunity to exist. Those are also ramifications to consider, but I wouldn't because it's silly to consider things that might have happened. - noutlaw, on 04/10/2009, -0/+0Interested in Talking to Others about Health Issues? try http://facetofacehealth.com
- bowlich, on 04/09/2009, -1/+1"But this doctor -- he said his name was Munish Batra -- wasn't at all what she expected. He was young, good-looking and encouraging."
Am I the only one who noticed that the writer conflated the doctor's age and physical appearance with his ethical standing? If only young, good-looking doctors are encouraging, well -- than old, decrepit ugly men must be discouraging bastions of apathy. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+0Fantastic story. The surgeons did an excellent job, I was actually hoping for better than that though. I'm sure life will be much easier for her now. I hope someday we can easily cure stuff like this as easily as we can cure the common cold.
I also hope that the girl can learn that God had nothing to do with any of this. It was just an unfortunate series of DNA combination and genetics or what have you. -
