- quantumHobbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33Anyone else think that the Romeo and Juliet effect might be responsible for the Digg implosion last night.
MPAA and Kevin to Digg users: Don't post a number .
Digg users: You can't tell me what to do!
Also I've noticed this with drinking in college. As a rule the drunkest freshmen at the party will be a baptist whose parents forbid any alcohol.
Luckily for me I'm a Catholic so when I rebel I use forbidden contraception. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26"Sounds more like a trap..."
Is that you, Adm. Akbar? - atown44, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28Th REAL answer is that they aren't full hearted Christians. People who don't believe in their own religion enough to follow specific guidelines can't really put themselves into the category of that certain belief.
- SambekZX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Warning: Christian spoilers below.
Your examples of what behavior is "bad" like drinking Drano are not moral choices, but simply choices made out of physical self-preservation. You'll die if you drink Drano or jump off a building. You'll get bleeding scratches all over your body and get arrested for running naked outdoors through bushes. Physical self-preservation is not the issue. The issue is whether Christians are more prone to go against their own moral rules than those who don't have rules imposed on them in the first place. I think they do and the bible explains why:
"What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "Do not covet." But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead. Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death." Romans 7:7-10
The bible says we all have desires that can be described as being Anti-God. Once God lays down a law, our desires immediately seize the opportunity to be contrarian and to want the very thing that was prohibited. This is the "sinful desire" that every human being on the planet suffers from, and what every human being will be eternally punished unless God intervenes. I'm not convinced that premarital sex with an intended marriage partner is necessary sin, but if someone thinks it is a God law, then their desires within them are going to naturally run against that. Resistance to any authority, whether it be parents, teachers, or ultimately God is engrained in our beings. - 10mod3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23From quantumhobbit: "The Bible actually doesn't forbid fornication directly just adultery. Latter church leaders extended the meaning of adultery."
Not true. It was Jesus who clarified what adultery meant. "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." Matthew 5:28 - Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -17/+32The real answer is that most Christians really don't believe that premarital sex is wrong. They just say they believe that because that's what's expected. They may even think they believe it, but the fact is that they don't. Think about this for a moment: if you *really* believe that something is terribly wrong, you're not going to do it. Period. If you do it, it's because you don't really believe it's wrong. I'm not going to be tempted to do something that I truly believe is wrong. If I actually believe with all my heart that a certain action is bad for me, there is no chance for temptation to take hold. I'm not tempted to drink Drano because I now it's bad. I'm not tempted to jump off of buildings because I know that's bad. I'm not tempted to run naked through rose bushes because I know that's bad. See what I mean?
As a former Christian, I've put a lot of thought into this, but I may not have had enough caffeine this morning to elucidate my thoughts more clearly. - laelfrog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17"because it feels good?"
Its like trying not to press the red button when its in your face every day.
http://www.wimp.com/press/ - xerosis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20That's what all the ugly people say.
- silencerider151, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22Because being a Christian doesn't mean that you follow the Bible perfectly all the time.
It's something that all Christians will never quite achieve. - ImYourRealDad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Who needs psychology when you have booze?
- keegster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17wow, teenagers breaking rules. what an awesome concept.
- gethane, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17@ IAMADAMWILSON
Try reading the article. The author is Christian. The article is about psychology, not religion. The religion part is an example of the psychology. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Because she let's me and being a geek I don't turn it down
- quantumHobbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Probably not I am on Digg aren't I.
- Jolls, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13easy their boy. I'm a Christian and I don't really mind the article. I practice and am for abstinence (this does not mean i'm for 'abstinence-only' education mind you, i'm smart enough to not do something if it doesn't work) but still found the article interesting and non-conflicting with my views. like atown44 said, the author is a Christian and isn't anti-Christ or pro-atheist at all.
- Texasbb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12You gotta try it before you buy it!
- Alimack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I thought "Wow, it's nice to see an evangelical Christian being sensible about things for a change." He's setting a Good Example.
- Hetman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12That was the longest silliest rant that I have ever read. There were no logical conclusions to draw from it. Except maybe that you are uptight and never get laid so you dont want anyone else to get laid.
- wonkavsn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think the author made a pretty lofty claim by saying that there is a higher chance for Saudi boys being homosexual (in that it's easier). That is complete speculation.
That aside I largely agree with him. While I believe that sex should be reserved for marriage, I do think that a great deal of education about it should be offered as well. If real education about it isn't offered then I don't think parents are in the right to get upset with their children when they choose to have pre-marital sex.
Romeo and Juliet got married in secret before they first slept together. - mlvassallo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Romeo and Juliet got married in secret before they first slept together."
I just thought I should restate that. - Wahoo06, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13No, the real reason is that Christians are definitely not perfect, despite their best efforts.
I always find it funny how non-Christians attack Christians for hypocrisy though. Meanwhile, how many non-Christians adhere to their morals 100% of the time? I do not believe that number can be anything but zero, and Christians I have found are more likely to admit to that than otherwise. We all fall short of the ideals we set at some point or another, but to act as though you have never done so is of the highest levels of hypocrisy. - rasensio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9what part of the bible says DON'T HAVE SEX UNTIL MARRIED ?
and what part says, PRIESTS CANT HAVE SEX ? - jlondon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Actually, when it comes to sexuality the new testament actually says sex in marriage is the last resort. Technically you are supposed to not even get married if you can, but to remain chaste completely."
This isn't entirely accurate. Paul tells the early church of Corinth that if they have no desire to get married then they shouldn't feel obligated to do so because obligation is no way to enter a marriage. At the time of the writing, Corinth was a port town and extremely amoral regarding sexuality. The temple of Aphrodite actually employed 1000 priestess who would "service" men throughout the day.
Paul also prefaces his statements with the caveat that these are his words, "not the Lords" (Jesus). Paul can be cynical towards marriage but Jesus never is. - tacroy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I was also a Christian that did not want to have sex until marriage. Now I'm married...crazy kinky married sex is go.
One thought, that only applies to Christians : Marriage is the "union of two people" the biblical idea is that SEX IS MARRIAGE, the ceremony is just a party for the friends to congratulate you on scoring. Thats the reason why adam and eve never had a ceremony, thats why one of the reasons you can get a divorce is "failure to consummate" cause if you didn't have sex, then you arn't married.
So anyway, more power to you for waiting, ignore all the nay-sayers, but PLEASE put sex in its correct placement. It IS marriage.
Also, for all the people that say "you have to try it before you buy it." if you believe that God and make the world, if He can split the red sea, if He can raise people from the dead: Then He can make your sex with your wife, freaking sweet - crosswalkernie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8We aren't genetically hardwired to abstain until marriage.
Abstinence education = a terrible idea. Kids should learn about safer sex practices and more reasonable approaches for dealing with life. Obviously, abstaining is the safest way to go about it, but the failure rates are HUGE. - BigErn847, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8My Leisure Suit Larry video game told me to have premarital sex.
- Maceebe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I am a devout Chritsain who is saving himself until marrige. pre-marital sex is not wong, it just poses complications that I am not willing to deal with at my age.
- bmartin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The mystery to me is why people keep using ***** PC abominations. WTF is up with wo/men, s/he, he/she, etc.? Does every wo/man need reminders that wo/men have different genders? FFS

You couldn't be more true! Just ask my ex-roommate, who claims that God is very important to her. Yet she's pregnant at 20 (and last I spoke to her, 4 months ago, she didn't even have a boyfriend!) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Every one of my young (late teen early 20s) 'christian' friends have more pre-marital sex that their non-christian counterparts (me being one of them unfortunately :( ). The bible says not to have pre marital sex. The modern day young christian friends of mine tell me 'oh its ok as long as you renounce your sins'
:mind boggles:
If you devote your life to something as serious as religion why not adhere or be in accordance with the ***** doctrine that's supposedly so important to you that you find it necessary to spend 2 hours every sunday in a church. I understand most people dont have a concrete ideology, but sheesh. - bushcat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Of course Christians have sex before marriage. That's what engagements were all about before the Victorians got their hands on morality.
1) Pledge to marry, i.e. become engaged.
2) You've got about a year to get the lady pregnant. If she's not pregnant within that time, you're released from the pledge.
3) If she's pregnant, you marry.
People had short, brutal lives and needed offspring to provide support. No pregnancy, no marriage. That simple. - JQP123, on 10/12/2007, -22/+29"Because being a Christian doesn't mean that you follow the Bible perfectly all the time."
Thank "god" for that. The last thing the world needs is people owning slaves, burning witches at the stake and stoning people to death because the Bible tells them to. - Hetman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Why did you use the word they. Are you not part of humanity?
- Alimack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Not really anti-Christian. The author's a Christian. Just anti-abstinence only education.
- ssmith2k3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Obviously, if you got married at age 16 or whatever, it was a lot easier back then to 'save yourself'.
- quantumHobbit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ TheWedge
You need to see the episode of the Simpson's with the Comparison of Protestant and Catholic heavens. We get the booze. Also salsa dancing.
More seriously, if you're fine as an atheist then good for you. I would personally find atheism bleak but that's me and not you or the rest of Digg. And by "with God" I didn't mean in church and praying all the time. You don't have to be a Christian to do good things and act kindly toward your fellow man. I've always thought it was possible to be a good person with or without religion and in that sense you an atheist can be "with God" without knowing that He works through you. Of course I think its easier to be a good person with religion, but again that's me not you or Digg. - quantumHobbit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Call me stupid but I believe it to be extremely uplifting that some Jew could be nailed to a tree and with his dieing words forgive his killers. Also God doesn't "damn you to Hell", He simply lets you choose whether you want to be with Him in heaven or not. Hell isn't like Dante described it as a physical torture chamber, but the mental anguish of not being "with God". God doesn't punish us so much as respect free will. I can't speak for all Christians but that is what I was taught as a Roman Catholic.
- michaeldillon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Horny trumps Pledge every time.
- rollem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'm sorry neiby, but I think your reasoning is flawed. It is very human to do things which we know are wrong. Your definition of right and wrong is based on past actions. By this logic, no one has ever done anything that they think was wrong. I believe that EVERYONE has done SOMETHING that they would acknowledge as being wrong. Also, by your logic, people who steal or harm others truly believe that what they're doing is not wrong. You've never heard anybody admit fault and ask forgiveness for something that they think was wrong to do?
Many Christians do believe strongly that sex before marriage is wrong but are unable to resist the natural urges that are understandably very strong. -
