- anexanhume, on 07/01/2009, -1/+31BECAUSE IT TASTES GOOD
- onClipEvent, on 07/03/2009, -0/+13It's CHEAP to buy TONS of junkfood in North America. I was in Paris last year, and you pay $3-4US for a glass bottle of coke (when you sit in the cafe). It is considered a treat to have a drink like that, not a standard accompaniment. There's no way you'll want to order more unless you're rich. Of course, the same can be said for food in general, not just soft drinks.
- diulei, on 07/01/2009, -6/+19Yea, blame the restaurant for being a fatass.
- bencanfield, on 07/03/2009, -0/+12Yeah apparently the cheesy mozzarella sticks tell my brain that I like them. So when I'm stuck eating broccoli my brain's going "hey! remember the mozzarella sticks? they're DAMN GOOD"
It's funny how the brain's circuitry works. - NBCLocal, on 07/01/2009, -0/+12So is this why I sit down and eat an entire box of Oreo Cakesters?
- AlKo, on 07/02/2009, -3/+15Portion size is a big factor... US portion sizes are much larger than anywhere else in the world.
- DouglasQ, on 07/03/2009, -1/+11I think Americans over-eat because their hands can reach their faces.
- Sherman901, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9Adding a fart joke in a non-audible comment. Smooth.
- Paulish, on 07/03/2009, -0/+7Everything is expensive in Paris.
- SystemicThought, on 07/03/2009, -0/+7It is important to remember that eating is only half of the equation for weight. The other is level of exercise. Michael Phelps is considered to have a nice body, correct? Well, he eats 12,000 calories per day when he is training (5-6 times what the normal person needs daily). Exercise is just as important as healthy eating, and any solution to the obesity epidemic needs to include physical activity as well as a healthy diet.
- ConcernedCanuck, on 07/03/2009, -1/+7leptin, the answer is leptin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leptin - TheMachine1, on 07/03/2009, -0/+6As someone mentioned "portion size" if you are in your SUV and you are very thin that looks odd. So naturally you eat a lot to get your size up to match your ride. Plus that extra inch of fat adds an additional 5 mph of impact protection in a crash.
- andymci, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5Never tried them. This seems like all the more reason to never try them in the future, either.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5They do put butter in everything...
- zagatbuzz, on 07/01/2009, -2/+7To fill up that empty hole in our hearts? Seriously though, definitely try to avoid the processed foods as often as possible. A - its bad for you, and B- it just doesn't compare in taste with the real, fresh foods.
- GreatDrok, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4You're right. I have never been able to finish a portion in the US. Any meal that has more than 5-600 calories is simply too big.
- BeShirtHappy, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4Oreo Cakesters are so delicious... like heaven in your mouth.
- insanebrain, on 07/03/2009, -2/+6Backbone ? We overeat because we are not strong enough to resist temptation.
- mytealjacket, on 07/03/2009, -3/+7I see a lot of comments on here that seem rather hateful of fat people -- implying they are too stupid, ignorant, or 'low class' to make the right decisions for themselves. If you read the article, or actually think critically on the subject, you will see that the obesity epidemic is complex. There is no single cause or place to put the blame here.
Yes it is worse in America – and in my opinion I think that has a lot to do with our cultural values like ‘bigger = better”. But I also think it has to do with the aggressiveness of corporate capitalism, which hit the US first. And as globalism spreads, so does the obesity epidemic grow.
And ya, it's more than just corporations too, just like all human behavior there are many contributing variables, including individual differences in genetics and will power. But if we want to have a meaningful conversation on this topic, we should put aside the hate and blame. - Sherman901, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4ONCE IT HITS YOUR LIPS, IT'S SO GOOD
- stonebear, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Same here. I use it when I'm out of stevia, and I don't get the cravings I do with sugar.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3If you can grow it or kill it you can eat it. Follow that and you won't be fat. No processed food.
- stonebear, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4unfortunately; when the food you eat is making you sick, you don't feel like exercising.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4There are also very very cheap vegetables and meats. It costs me $3 for a weeks worth of sweet potato's and I have one with every meal. Buy chicken breasts in bulk. Not that hard.
- AmnesiacJack, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4Is it wrong that I read that in the voice of an angry old oriental man?
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Eh, shut up about it being the food's fault. It's like arguing that tobacco companies are to blame for people smoking. Every action is a choice.
- vcredline, on 07/03/2009, -3/+6When one eats healthy and works out you don't crave junk food anymore
In my experience at least - mytealjacket, on 07/03/2009, -2/+5I don't know if it is better or worse for my argument to say this, but I'm not even overweight.
But I do stand up against what I think is wrong -- like being hateful toward people just because they are fat. - anexanhume, on 07/02/2009, -2/+4You stupid fat stupid restaurant! You're so fat!!!! Why are you so fat?! It's like I try to think of how fat you are, and my brains starts clogging at the mere thought of your lipid-abundance!
How's that? - NBCLocal, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2Enjoying one as I type.
- Elijah17, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Hey man, I used to be 270. I lost 60 pounds. And I'm not lying. I know what it's like to be overweight. I was just trying to be funny.
And no, what I just said was not just *****.
I feel that for a 6ft4 guy 210 is reasonable... - choopie911, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3Phew, I thought it was the weed
- NiftyG, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3Portion size is part of it, the other part is the quality of the food.
Most fast food is stripped of it's nutritional value. It fills you up, but doesn't feed you,. You get hungry again more quickly because the body isn't getting the nutrition it needs. - DarkCloud515, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Munchies.
- DetroitIsCool, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2you're an ignorant fat ass who loves to eat *****
- cfuse, on 07/03/2009, -1/+2If you look at the caloric expenditure for an hour of hard running, and then the amount of calories in most standard meals, you will see that exercise is a ***** way of losing weight. Exercise will improve your health and fitness, but is next to useless without dietary controls.
- randumbusername, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1i think it's because people are stressed the ***** out.
food is the quickest release. - Mothrog, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1"A - Maybe there should be healthy fast food places for us really busy people"
It's called a sandwich. Take out meat. Put meat on bread. Put cheese on bread. Eat.
"B-You're right it doesn't compare; usually the processed foods are better tasting because the people who processed them made them taste good. Fresh foods which aren't processed are hits and misses (i.e. not everybody likes cherries, bananas, apples, etc.)"
If you think ***** processed food tastes better, you need to try finding someone who can cook. - HimThatSpeaks, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1I blame the food industry. I knew it was not my fault. I just knew it. Now, who can I sue?
- DarkRellik, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Yeah its the chronic.
- Yazilliclick, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Price is just one factor amongst many really.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1I can attest to that.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -2/+3Whatever you do, don't blame yourself for being fat.
- Yazilliclick, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1You don't get cravings for nutrients, your body doesn't really know what it needs. It's very simplistic in it's urges.
- zoziw, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Don't forget Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria that has been with humans for over 50,000 years which in the last century has been in decline. The good news is that it is connected with ulcers and stomach cancers, the bad news is that lack of it is associated with diabetes, asthma and obesity.
http://www.cbc.ca/quirks/media/2008-2009/mp3/qq-20 ... - LokitheComplex, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1We overeat because we can. Cheap food makes people fat. It happens like that the world over. It doesn't happen overnight but it happens with consistency.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -1/+2Speaking from experience I can tell you that unhealthy foods can be just as, if not more addictive than anything else i.e alcohol, cigarettes, weed, gaming etc. I eventually quite most of my bad habits through will power and going cold turkey.
I've also noticed (well for me personally) once I stop an certain activity i.e drinking or gaming for a while I find it hard to find them enjoyable again. I think it has got a lot to with dopamine. - Munk3y, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Just one? Muwhahahaha!!
- stonebear, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1It is supposed to be there. The issue not that it is there, but that it is infecting people. It's not supposed to do that.
- Yazilliclick, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Yes but their are many factors that affect how strong that temptation may be. Ultimately it resides with the individual, however it doesn't hurt to identify and understand outside factors. It's an uphill battle once your hooked and every little bit helps.
