- Crazyredivan, on 01/29/2009, -0/+7We've had a culture of keeping up with the Joneses of happiness. They said it right in the article:
"we Americans tend to grab superficial quick fixes such as extravagant purchases and fatty foods to subdue any negative feelings that overcome us. Such measures seem to hinge on a belief that constant happiness is somehow our birthright."
Sadness is a part of happiness, like death is a part of life. - jeddyftb, on 01/29/2009, -1/+7read "herein" as "heroin"
- Gndoab, on 01/29/2009, -0/+6Nope. Buddha didn't "figure" anything out.
There is an old Zen saying, it goes something like
"If you see the Buddha, kill him." very clear and concise advice. - themadrammer, on 08/18/2009, -2/+8Relying on Psychologists to tell you about happiness, is a good way to get the opposite.
- mittortz, on 01/29/2009, -0/+6From the looks of these comments, I think it is pretty apparent that psychology is not digg's strong point.
- djtomorama, on 01/29/2009, -1/+6Happiness is a warm gun, obviously.
- PeanutCheeseBar, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4Dugg for spelling "happiness" with an i instead of a y.
- JedicodeWarrior, on 01/29/2009, -7/+11Happiness!!?? Last few (8) years?? What the ***** country have they been living in??

Hahaha, not on Digg. On Digg, other people = angry bitter flame war. - archer104, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3Negative circumstances don't have to lead to negative thoughts once you realize that there aren't REALLY any negative circumstances. Nothing is anything until we decide it's meaning. In really everything is just mere quanta. It's all atoms. But we label bundles of atoms different things because that is how our minds work. We have overcomplicated our lives to make it seem like imaginary things like social status and job title and ownership of things is the actual reality when these are just thoughts. We are all playing a game and the goal of the game is to enjoy your little blink of an existence. And the great thing is that you have total control of what things represent. To use your example, the layoffs, you could think of it as one of your generation's defining moments where you will you be able to tell your grandkids how everyone was struggling but with hard work you found an inner strength that you didn't know existed which made the rest of your life easier and more fulfilling.
- Samurai77, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3Wasn't this all figured out 2500 years ago by Siddhārtha Gautama?
- DanPlainview, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3I read that as "Heroin is the best way to find well being."
I think I need to take a serious look at myself. - bipolarruledout, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3There are few ways to judge weather a decision will be good or bad until some time in the future particularly if you don't understand what your basing the decision on. Luck is nearly every bit important. Maybe taking up heroin wasn't a great decision but luckily you found a wonderful dealer with quality product at good prices.

- vanithav, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2I still need to find true love and happiness!!
- Visarga, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2Happiness is totally dependent upon creative states of mind. Whether you are contemplating intellectual matters, business, relationship matters - the same rule applies. If you can mix and match the elements of your life in such a way as to create something superior (emergence), you will be happy. All the cases discussed in the article are included in this basic idea (happiness comes from creativity).

Turn around, idiot. ;) - roodammy44, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2I've always found that happiness relys on the ability to make good decisions.
Make crappy decisions and they will come back and haunt you. - mahadiga, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2Happiness will never come to those who fail to appreciate what they already have." --Unknown

- scooterbaga, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2Wasn't really concerned with why. I assumed there was a reason. I also hate 'feel good' movies where everything works out in the end. I will never watch it.
Sunshine, Reservoir Dogs... much more my speed. Resolution in a 90 min package is for chumps and shallow women... Although... Sunshine did sort of have a happy ending... so I'm not sure what I'm saying there.
Dugg you up btw... not really sure why your getting dugg down... - 0crabby0, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2Thank you - You've made me very happy...

Following the teachings of Buddha is not good buddhism. - bipolarruledout, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2This interests me because I much prefer to compartmentalize my life because I don't feel they are compatible with each other. There is only so much I want my boss knowing about me for example. What I do outside of work is none of your business at can color the professional expectations of people. Now if your just completely average I can see how this wouldn't be a problem. I know plenty of people who freely mix their business and personal life and these people seem shallow... but they also seem perfectly contented... I don't know if happy is the right word.... It's just how I feel.

its an easy read that summaries numerous studies on happiness. Sonja Lyubomirsky is a really good professor, currently in her class right now.
a little side note, 50% of how happiness is determined comes from genetics, 40% on what activities you are currently doing, 10% on life circumstances (i.e. wealth/health/standard of living) - maci01, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2Digg is my anti-drug . . . err happiness.
- Samurai77, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1Source? I've never heard that in all of my readings, nor does it seem in accordance with the teachings.

- MrZaiko, on 01/29/2009, -0/+1hey, if it makes you happy, say it like that =)
- scm21st, on 09/10/2009, -0/+1Forget trying to be happy, just try to be more alive. Experience all feelings, good and bad.
- themadrammer, on 08/18/2009, -0/+1Isn't it interesting that everyone knows what the problem is...yet no one is willing or able to do anything about it. Even the "Guru's" are materistic and self-centered :(
- inactive, on 01/29/2009, -3/+3I followed Quark's advice, and bought peace at an all time low.
*Happy Dance* - wolfpack15, on 01/29/2009, -0/+0I see what the quote is saying but at the same time I can also look at the other side of that quote. If it's positive thoughts of what you have, who you are, where you are and what you are doing, you'll think about things that make you happy. But negative circumstances is going to lead to negative thoughts. For example, it's hard to think about positive things if you hear rumors of layoffs in this economy or working on Monday and etc.
- bigbadbruins33, on 01/29/2009, -1/+1Happiness is the girl in my trunk
- wakeupsticky, on 01/29/2009, -1/+1See the movie, and you'll know why they did that.
- truck87bp, on 01/29/2009, -1/+1With all of the "Do Good'ers" around, people find it increasingly harder to Pursue anything that used to be fun. Our Society has taken the "Fun" out of life and replaced it with Danger and Tax.
"DANGER Will Robinson" if you let your dog ***** without cleaning it up you can get a ticket cause it might give someone cancer, or, or, or you know. Will cleans it up with a "Plastic Bag" and throws it in a trash bin to be around for a thousand years. Will, you can't fish without a license! ya but dad lost his job and we gotta eat. Will, you can get arrested for speaking your mind or the truth. "DANGER Will Robinson".
Life just isn't the same unless you've stepped in a little ***** once in a while. Today is like pissing off the back of a moving pickup truck, it all comes back in your face. - getagirl, on 11/08/2009, -0/+0People put off being happy until "something happens" like getting a new job, boyfriend etc, just be happy now and live life!! http://www.healthandhappiness.devhub.com/
- shadysoap, on 01/30/2009, -0/+0found a video that exemplifies this.
http://www.shadysoap.com/index.php?option=com_cont ... - bukiyou, on 01/29/2009, -0/+0be honest with yourself and your feelings. find people who will support you. find something so important that you'll stick with it through sorrow, pain disappointment and anything that life could throw at you.
It's not too hard. It just seems harder than before; because of modern conveniences we are capable of avoiding things that displease us in the slightest. More than anything, we've lost a realistic frame of reference of what real pain should be, thus having an unrealistic attitude of how easily happiness should be attained. - Merlyne, on 01/30/2009, -0/+0Happiness is predominantly based on the state of the mind. It is not based just on the sophisticated material gadgets that we possess...
- KRG12345, on 01/29/2009, -0/+0"Has the happiness frenzy of the past few years left you sad and anxious? Herein we report the surest ways to find well-being. "
At first I thought "Herein" said "Heroin" - DangerCollie, on 01/29/2009, -1/+1It's pretty lofty writing. One thing you can do to lower your stress and improve your peace of mind is getting a grip on your finances. Not owing a lot of money is marvelously liberating. Not owing any money and having a cash cushion in the bank brings a lot of peace of mind, especially when your co-workers are living in fear of layoffs.
Another cure for depression is decisive action. Even if it's not the best course of action, just having a plan will make you feel better. Whether it's a dispute, job loss, eviction, cancer...whatever it is. Researching a good plan will make you feel less like you're being victimized by circumstance. I have a friend who is a pilot and he says when things get dicey in the sky, they pull out their SoP's and checklists. He said those keep people from being paralyzed by fear or getting anxious and overlooking something. -
