- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Um... wow. That's pretty crazy.
Now I know what it feels like to be digested. - FatherG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Yay for the PillCam. Anything that keeps a 15-foot endoscope from going down my throat, nose or up my anus is all stars in this book. Little buggers are also able to get places and see things the traditional endoscopes can't.
- Rynoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6amen to that
- kd1s, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I concur! Combine this technology with functional MRI and functional CAT and now we'll have completely non-invasive diagnostic tools. I consider the capsule non-invasive too because it doesn't require anything other than a quick swallow.
I've always had a fascination with the workings of the human body. The gut is particularly interesting when you consider that in essence, it's just one end to end open tube with some muscles in between to close sections when it's time to digest something.
People tell me I missed my calling, I should have been an M.D. But the key difference between what I do now and what and M.D. does is that if a computer dies, it doesn't shake me as much as having a human patient die. - degree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you think the digestive tract is amazing, just think about the nervous system. Through chemical reactions and a dynamic structure, bunches of neurons create concious thought.
- dubbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These have their place but can't take biopsy samples (essential for any diagnosis) and can't be steered to take a second look at something they missed. Not entirely free from risk either. Then again (@ kd1s) MRI and CT scans both have risks too.
- thestorey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I have one of these for fun lol
they sent a working model to the hospital where my mom wokrs and they didnt want it so i tcame to me...- synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is one of those things that needs less telling us about it and more posting a youtube link.
- thebudgie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Simultaneously disgusting and interesting.
- mhanley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have always wanted to see what video from one of these cams looked like. +Digg

- mononexo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My dad -just- had this done last week and when I saw this headline we sat down and watched them all. Really interesting, great digg!
- thomasknowland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In 20 years, one of this things nephews is going to put a couple of stints in my heart. can't wait.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stop eating KFC every night and maybe you won't have life threatening heard disease in 20 years. Save up your KFC money and buy a treadmill.
- thomasknowland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You're a clever one. I eat well and exercise. Genetics stands in my way. Unless you're a world reknowned geneticist, STFU...
- dubbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1stents
- CarbonRod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 “The best part is they are reusable” (Sarcasm)
;P - sogracefully, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it was pretty cool when i got a little printed photo of my hiatal hernia after my endoscopy, but A WHOLE VIDEO?!?
this does seem a little more recreational than a traditional endoscope tube, though--like someone else said, there's no mechanism for biopsy sampling, which makes it basically not very useful for actual diagnosis. you would probably have to follow it up with a regular endoscopy if they actually saw anything. until then, this is a really fun toy.- dubbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The main value is that they give you direct images of the small intestine, which is too long and tortuous to get any endoscope into from either the top or the... other end
