I was in Vegas for PubCon in November. While playing craps, I stood next to a guy that must have drank 15 Red Bull & Vodkas while chain smoking. I thought at the time that the combination couldn't be good for the heart. Since I am such a zealous health fanatic, I couldn't resist the opportunity to harass him about it. Ironically, it was me that dropped from a heart attack a few weeks later. Go figure... - Buddhist, on 11/04/2007, -1/+46That's some seriously painful irony.

"Heart disease runs in my family. I am overweight, and I sit in a damn chair all day writing code. I am a developer and I hate my job (where I'm working at least). The management team I work with makes really bad decisions all the time and I have to suffer the brunt of the results. I'm too exhausted to look for a new job. I have a high level of stress, I eat unhealthily, I don't sleep much. I take caffeine pills to keep going during the day, I'm always angry and I'm probably suffering from clinical depression."
Not to sound too sanctimonious, but a lot of the problems listed above are entirely your fault. Overweight and sedentary? Exercise a little. Doesn't even have to be a lot, as long as it's regular. That might help a bit with stress, too. Hate your job? Get another one. To exhausted to get a new job? Try eating healthier (which you admit is one of your problems anyway) and getting more sleep. Too wired on caffeine to sleep? Try weaning yourself off the caffeine pills. Suffering depression? See a doctor.
You've got a lot of crap going on that is cross-enforcing other crap. Not good at all. If you suspect depression, going to a doctor sounds like a good first step. - inactive, on 11/04/2007, -3/+37So let's see here...
Heart disease runs in my family. I take caffeine pills to keep going during the day, I'm always angry and I'm probably suffering from clinical depression. All that and I'm only 25.
So now you want to take away my caffeine and alcohol? Hey, look, I'm probably gonna end up having a heart attack by the time I'm 28, so I may as well live it up now... - inactive, on 11/04/2007, -2/+29Those Red Bull wings may help get you to heaven after all...
- sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Your 100% right, that why the rule in my house for my teenage daughter is straight Vodka no mixers, I tell ya you gotta keep these kids on a short leash.
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21@axel
You should move to Montana or something. Maybe you could pull a Peter Gibbons and work a construction job? Anything's better than hating your life when you're in your 20's. - Raian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22I would hate to see the health risks of say.... jogging, or even sex-- if people are worried about increasing their heart rate they should just do the medical world a favour and kill themselves now.
- scoreboard27, on 11/04/2007, -2/+22Sorry to hear about your ticker, Jim.
- Lenin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"some major concerns with mixing these two drinks include, but are not limited to, cardiovascular risk, impaired judgment, shortness of breath, dizziness, disorientation and rapid heart beat."
Wow.. so if i don't mix Red bull with my vodka i wont get any of these?
They just listed all the side effects of alcohol and all the side effects of caffeine.
and i don't know about the people they interviewed in this article, but i know i'm drunk when the room is spinning, not when i feel sleepy. - DesertSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15"And that's no bull."
*groan* - tutivlahos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12That sucks!
I love to mix the two! I usually have more than 4 when I go out.
Better start getting another drink. - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"Long story short, people need to be careful. You only have one life to live."
But just don't be too careful, because, again, you only have one life to live. - VeryBoredNow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Ohh well,
looks like it's Vodka straight. - glucoseboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"The popular myth-killing Web site Snopes.com dismisses every notion that Red Bull has been linked to deaths in Sweden and Ireland. The Web site addresses false claims that Red Bull contains a banned substance that has been previously linked to brain tumors."
I use snopes.com and google too. Can I be an ABC correspondent? - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Stuff and nonsense. The amount of caffeine in a Red Bull is about the same as that in two normal colas. So if you have a cola mixer, ooh, you just mixed caffeine and alcohol! Oh noes!
Total fearmongering BS. FUD FUD FUD. - armbar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think you're overqualified. Check out NY Times?
- whymanwhy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Whenever I drink red bull vodka I always end up having too many because they are so good, but one major health risk they missed is that it makes you jump around like a jack rabbit on crack. Then I always just pass out from exhaustion. Quite fun.
- kevxross, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Bah! Those "side effects" are what make Jäger Bombs so great!
- dantelephoneman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@axel2k
Let me ask you this? Are there other people that you work with that do the same job as you? Are they less productive than you, do they seem to get nothing done and your the one doing all the work?
If so, I used to be like you, and I still am some of the time, but I learned something. If your co-workers don't get fired for being lazy asses, then you can slow down too and you will be safe. don't go trying to kill yourself for a company that is gonna just downsize and outsource you in 5 years. it is not worth it. Take a vacation and get your health and your life straight. - UglieJosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wait, what you're saying is that mixing two things that are known to be bad for you doesn't magically create something good for you? I thought Mixing harmful stimulants with hard liquor made a form of carrot juice.
This just seems like a very silly study to me. Why study toward a conclusion that is already foregone?
EDIT: Damn econoar got it in before me. - glucoseboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4OMG: That's it. I knew I tasted it somewhere before!!!
- yeahright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Anyone ever look at a tin of cat food? Almost every single cat food on the market today also has Taurine (one of the active ingredients in Red Bull) listed as a main ingredient.
Hmm... - AnteChronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Geez, if your comment is going to be nothing but the ALL CAPS name of an alcoholic beverage, at least spell it correctly: It's a Jager Bomb (or, to be even more anal about spelling, a Jäger Bomb), so named because it contains Jägermeister.
Huked awn foniks FTL. - mt066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They also give you the most hardcore hangover EVER. I only ever made that mistake once.
- econoar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That article sucked. Who wouldn't figure that it's not the best idea to mix a stimulant and alcohol? All they did was state the obvious by saying it would raise your heart rate. No *****?
- luistux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Read the article:
"We do not promote Red Bull energy drink as a mixer with alcohol as this might impair the positive effects of [the drink] as advertised," Radden wrote. "There is no reason why Red Bull…should not, like any other drink, be mixed with alcohol as long as people do not underestimate that alcohol consumption might impair their mental and physical activities."
Also, they mentioned a can of Red Bull has 80mg of caffeine, a "moderate" intake of caffeine of a healthy person should be about 400mg.
Seems like the biggest issue w/ Red Bull + Vodka is that you don't realize you're as drunk as you actually are because of the caffeine. - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The most debates about Red Bull wasn't about its caffeine, but its very high amounts of taurine. Caffeine effects are quite well documented, and I agree one shouldn't exaggerate this in stories, but it's the lots of taurine in combination with alcohol that's less documented and mostly controversial.

- andnever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Based on what I've seen, I think it's a growing trend," he said. "For some young people, it's a form of expression. We are looking at another generation that is looking for a form of expression and experiments with over-the-counter products."
oh i thought i did it cuz it tastes good... - cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5OMGWTFRBV
- whisperedlie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5the only health risk I perceive, and for which I avoid Red Bull and those energy drinks, is the risk of blowing chunks because that stuff tastes like you're licking the inside of someone's nut sack. oh, that and getting into a fist-fight with the frat boy at the bar next to you (wearing his standard-issue horizontally striped polo shirt and backwards ballcap covering a curly bro-fro) because he drank 14 of these in a row and started bumping into you and trying to fight you. I suppose vomit and semen are a biohazards, and you risk exposure to those when the barslut at the other end of the bar power-vomits all over the entire bar after every dude in the bar bombards her with "Cherry Bombs" until she starts giving head in the men's room. Yeah, those are the major health concerns I think about when someone mentions Red Bull and Vodka.
Give me a Guinness and a shot of Jameson, and cram your crappy Red Bull bomb up your trendy ass. - ridinlow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Damn I can't live without my Jager bombs
- zarathustra007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Like mixing a stimulant with alcohol is even new. Jeez - Irish coffee, rum and coke...... Really just a question of moderation, as always.
- loveandrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was at a wine bar and this guy walked in and ordered a "Red Bull and Vodka". The bartender was kind of pissed and said "we don't have Red Bull."
The guy said "Then what do you put your vodka in?"
We all laughed and he got a shot of Belvedere on the house. - pegothejerk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's fine and dandy, unless you happen to have a heart defect like me and don't know about it. I had no idea I have ARVD until my sister dropped one night and had to be rushed in for a defib. Turns out with this inheritable condition you never know you have it until something kicks your heart into the right pattern, and you simply drop dead. A cocktail of caffeine and alcohol would be perfect. Usually around 30 years of age, and it doesn't matter if you are in poor shape or perfect shape. Long story short, people need to be careful. You only have one life to live.
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this article is red *****. everyone knows that a negative * a negative = a positive.
- Chode2235, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2we used to do a lot of Ripped Fuel (ephedrine) and Jack Daniels. I quit after sitting in a chair willing myself to breathe, knowing that I should be passed out, but my mind was all twitchy and my chest was 10,000 pounds. Its nasty stuff.
- dooms13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Well I thought mixing caffeine with alcohol wasn't a good idea. Its mixing two types of drugs, a stimulant (caffeine) and a depressant (alcohol) wouldn't be good.
- CedEx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, but the article isn't multiplying vodka and Redbull.
It's *adding* vodka and Redbull... so that means (negative) + (negative) = (negative) - ImOscar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2NEWSFLASH! BOOZE MIGHT BE BAD FOR YOU. Especially when mixed with other stuff that's not good for you.
Most of these "major concerns" are desired effects. Diziness, disorentation, impaired judgement. That sounds good, I'll take two. - leftcranium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love red bull and vodka...I can drink more when out in vegas. It also allows me to drive faster on my way home.
- The0cho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree about the taurine but obviously the writers of the article didn't. They never mentioned it once while they mentioned caffeine multiple times.
- jonstafari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Lenin
I agree with you 100%. i drink redbull regularly, without alcohol, which gives me a buzz - but without the alcohol effect. This article is really bs though, because if you drink enough redbull (or other energy drink alone) it'll give you some odd side effects (like the heart stuff, jitters and such). Now, you toss some vodka (or Cabo Wabo) into the mix and it's a bit more of a buzz, but with the alcohol = fun times. And when you're pissed, you're pissed... the room spins, your worlds slur... life's just falling to pieces. But hey, you'll be awake through all of it thanks to the 8 redbulls you've consumed. Fun times...
Next thing you know, Budweiser will come out with a caffeinated beer --opps, they already did ;-) Wonder if that stuff gives the same "bad health risks".
Now who has my Vodka+RedBull and spliff? - KlassicThreadz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is teh lame. Red Bull and Vodka are yum yum.
- aviewfromonhigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly. The only "bombs" you should be doing are Irish Car Bombs.
- stolenpass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thai Redbull is where its at. :)
http://www.bevnet.com/reviews/redbull/Product_1147.asp
Imagine redbull being syrup mixed w/water and Carbonation. Thai rebull is just the Syrup. - GirSaysDoom13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so my awesome combination of diet coke, red bull, and smirnoff ice is no good?
are vodka coolers okay? :D - Kaglan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Woo hoo! Nothing like seeking self expression through consumption!
- danielsan1701, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why waste top-shelf Grey Goose when the coppery-sweet smack in the face of the Red Bull would make Yeltsin's Piss Brand Vodka taste good?
