i-dentalresources.com — So you spend all day confined in a dungeon in front of a couple glowing computer screens, coding C++ and eating McDonald ’s for lunch? You just killed it. You just tried to hard and made it blatantly obvious. Instead you should have just added a step to his original list and it would have been MUCH funnier. - NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15"2. Get out of office"
Running around in tiny circles within the office for a short while is just as effective, you never really have to leave. - z00k, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1I might be a geek but i still get outside alot... And i have been doing parkour for about 8 months now so i can say im in pretty good shape :)

2. Get out of the office! (Duh!)
3. 20% exercise, 80% diet (Totally agree, nothing worse than looking at a 1 pound gain after a strenuous weekly workout because your diet is crap.)
4. Pack your lunch / cook (Nothing but 100% truth here but beware of packing junk food that masquerades as health food.)
5. Get a partner (Not my bag but I am independent and consider exercise a stress release from other people’s drama.)
6. Set a time that’s right for you (Good point)
7. No fad diets – EVER (Diets never work, you have to fundamentally change your approach to food. Everybody has that foodstuff they can’t live without. You need to incorporate such item(s) into your eating habits so that you won’t feel deprived but at the same time don’t overdo it on the calories.)
8. The right way and the wrong way (Agree wholeheartedly. Nothing sends me to the sofa and fridge faster than the thought that I NEED to lose 5 pounds a week for 6 weeks!)
9. Drink lots of water throughout the day (Dehydration is a killer!)
10. Don’t eat before bed (I agree with this tip but not for his reasons. A calorie is a calorie no matter when it is eaten. I wouldn’t eat right before bed because I tend to overeat on junk food late at night, which leads to an upset stomach and subsequent weight gain.)
11. Don’t listen to your parents (Better yet start with a small plate to begin with. This way you can retain the habit of finishing your plate as a signal to stop eating.)
12. Do your homework (Big agreement. It is all about trial and error to find what works for you for the long term.)
13. Be committed (Duh.) - theRIAA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Get a partner"

http://www.staples.com/sbd/cre/marketing/easybutton/easybutton.html?cm_sp=creative-_-easy%20button_homegr01-_-easybutton - missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Yeah, but who wants to run for 3 miles every morning? If we liked to run, we wouldn't need weight loss tips, would we?
- glmory, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7"If we liked to run, we wouldn't need weight loss tips, would we?"
while this is true, it is good to be reminded that this is a pretty much fail safe method. I have known several people who have lost 50+ pounds by getting off their ass and running a few miles a day - mikesty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Great call. Running is such a great aerobic activity. I've found that excessive weight has not been my problem, it's just a general inability to perform highly-aerobic activities.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11OK, I'm going to let you diggers in on a little secret. When you see us out running in the early morning, late at night, in the cold, rain, etc? You think we are some kind of weirdos who love running?
Well, hot tip. Most of us really don't. I'm planning on a 6-10 mile run tomorrow morning. And I'm dreading it. I'd much rather sleep late, eat a bunch of waffles for breakfast, watch football, take a nap, and generally sit on my ass all day. But it's bad for me. I need to exercise to stay healthy. So suck it up and get it done. - Parasocks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Meh, I'm gonna let you do it for me.
- encognito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You need to walk before you can run. Literally. Nearly everyone can walk. I have lost 55+ pounds mostly due to walking. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen an obviously out of shape idiot step onto a treadmill and attempt to jog or run. They show up every December or January and are gone by February due to injury, illness or quick burnout. The real culprit of course is stupidity. I say it again; you need to walk before you can run.
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"10. Don’t eat before bed
This is another weight loss tip. When you go to sleep your body slows down metabolizing. If you eat right before bed this metabolic slowing may cause extra weight gain."
Myth. Calories burned while sleeping is about 80-90% of calories burned while walking down the street and 110% of calories burned while sitting in front of the television set. Most of the energy in your body is used for the purpose of keeping your heart beating, your brain functioning, your lungs moving, and your body temperature consistent.
This is why 20% exercise, 80% diet works. It's because exercising doesn't create a significant increase in calorie loss compared to dieting on its own (although it helps to build muscle, which increases energy need, and increases cardiovascular strength, which increases oxygen efficiency for endurance and fat burning, which increases your resting metabolic rate).
If you walk 3 or 4 miles, you'll lose about 300 calories. That's two cans of soda. If you run the same amount of time, you'll burn about 600-1000 calories. But either way you look at it, you're still burning between 75-100 calories/mile no matter how fast or hard you pound the pavement.
Technically, if you're 180 pounds, you're burning up to 2000 calories a day doing absolutely nothing. Zip. Zero. Sitting on your ass costs more energy than that expended by running 20 miles. Just to put things in perspective.
- peekingduck, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE there isn't a way to do it by merely pushing a button???!

That blaring mistake makes me thow out the entire, vague mess.- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=755705
I gained 10 lbs, stopped eating before bed, and lost it again without any other changes. It's generally bad for everyone, just some people don't gain weight from it. - krazytom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Durrok, the article you pointed to shows that not eating before bed doesn't mean anything. It just means you're eating less.
If you eat fewer calories and/or exercise more, you lose weight. Doesn't matter what time. - artgon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3This is absolutely false in the article. I've heard from multiple sources, including a former Kinesiology professor of mine that eating before bed makes absolutely no difference. Eating is eating. If you eat less in general then you'll lose weight. If you eat nothing all day and then eat right before bed you will not gain weight.
The best tip in that article is doing something you can maintain forever. Not forcing yourself to go to the gym but rather something fun like a team sport. - wingerspoon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1indeed - I hear you lose a pound every night...so if you want to flatter yourself, weigh yourself in the morning!
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=755705
- pauljaroszewski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22just stop drinking soda and you will lose a bunch of weight early on.
- CEpeep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4For most people, this is indeed the fastest way to lose weight and see fast results (assuming you can stay committed to it). The only things I regularly drink anymore are water and an occasional coffee. Whenever I have soda or other beverages, it's a special treat, much like a rich chocolate or special dessert.
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4or switch to diet. While it still has many negative health benefits it's better then the massive amount of sugar in the regular versions. I personally can't stand mnt dew anymore but diet mnt dew is like crack to me.
- missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yeah, but if you switch to diet you've got the health risks to be concerned about other than just getting fat.
The artificial sweeteners only cause cancer in lab animals in ridiculously high dosages, but it is possible some of consume close to that. Also, a lot of this stuff hasn't been around long enough to really know what it does to us. I'll be the last person to be afraid of science, but I'll take good old high fructose corn syrup over Splenda any day.
I wish they'd just go back to using cane sugar. I'd pay more for it. :( - ISIfunded911, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1high fructose corn syrup is very very bad for the arteries and the heart.
Brown sugar is quite good, but complete sugar is the best for health (no caries!).

- darigaaz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3If you're going to do martial arts, at least learn one that's a useful in a danger situation, not like Tae Kwon Do(only kicks, no punches... it's more a sport than a martial art right now).
My suggestions are Kung Fu and Aikido.
Just my two cents.- keruha, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3American Ju-jitsu / Sambo is the way to go.
- hookET, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I would recommend a form of submission grappling, whether it be traditional or brazlian jui jitsu. Submission grappling allows people to train at nearly 100% with NO STRIKES, so there are no black eyes or injuries due to mishaps during standup sparring/striking. The chances of injury are much less, and the competitive nature is at its max.
As a bonus most grappling matches are usually described as "chess matches" - perfect for a programmer / techie! - darigaaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If you dont want to risk yourself to get injured, my suggestions is Aikido. It's not 100% safe because you still practice defending yourself against your opponent's attacks(you and your partner take turns attacking each other) but it's more safer than other martial arts. Plus, in Aikido they teach you how to fall to the ground without injuring yourself.
The bad thing is, depending on which style of Aikido you're doing, you dont have very much practice in "real combat" until you have reach a medium/high level in practice. - akatsuki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I think that Muay Thai workouts are ideal, but frankly very strenuous. I personally like Kendo for working out in a relatively safe environment (admittedly not a practical art). Plus size is less of an issue than in other arts which is key.
Tae Kwon Do can be a lot of fun if you have a decent amount of flexibility though. Not everyone takes martial arts just to "kick ass". Capoeira is also quite a bit of fun, although I was never quite acrobatic enough for the real cool stuff.
In the guide, he forgot to mention to eat slowly. Most people wolf down their food far too fast to ever know when they are full. If you eat slowly, you get a better sense of when you are full. Also lifting weights is an important part of speeding your metabolism by increasing muscle mass, but I disagree with his advice to eat more calories. Initially most people are probably eating enough anyway for weight-lifting and gaining bulk. Calorie management for weight-lifting should only be done when everything else is in place, else you end up being a fat muscle-bound guy, and that is not a good look for anyone.
I actually think taking up a sport is far better than just working out. A regular squash/volleyball/soccer game a couple times a week is far more involving than running or getting on a machine. Especially when you start, you will burn a ton of calories as your body is inefficient, as you gain skill, your caloric expenditure will decrease. - missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2*knows tae kwon do*
It's not all kicks, no punches. It's kick-based, yes, but we do have quite a few hand techniques. The problem with tkd is that most schools will teach you a sport and not combat. The problem isn't with the style itself, but how it's taught.

- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1the right genes make the right proteins!! you're both right.
also, I eat a ton all the time and never exercise. I just run from the cops a lot. Also, I wrestle with my dog, that's fun. And I don't get fat. Just punch yourself in the face until you stop getting fat, I guarantee that'll work. - glmory, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"right genes?"
while it may help a little bit. the simple fact that obesity rates have shot up from like 3% to like 30% while genes stayed the same rules out genetics as the main cause in 9 out of 10 fat people. - miles32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I do believe that DNA instructs the body on what proteins to make so either one is equally valid.
I could be wrong though - missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1glmory, not necessarily. I read something about how most people have genes that will store fat for hard times (fat genes), and some people will just use it up (skinny genes).
I'm not offering it as an excuse, but if 90% of fat people have the "fat genes," as fatty foods become easier to get, that 90% percent continues to store the stuff. They would have stored it 50 years ago, but as nutrition has gotten better and fatty foods have gotten easier to come by, there's more for them to store.

Not everyone can run 3 miles off the bat... (noting that I weigh 140 lbs) - missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Uh, first of all, there's a reply button: use it.
Second: I'll ask you again, and this time I want you to pay attention. If someone is in the habit of running several miles a day, or he already enjoys it, don't you think he would already have the weight thing covered? Exercise is a "no *****" if you want to lose weight. Everyone knows this.
I -do- need to take this advice? How do you know I'm not a marathon runner, brainiac?

I was getting ready to flame another get-thin-quick fad scheme and/or drug but I didn't find any of that. Proper diet & exercise is the best way to go. There are no shortcuts. - glmory, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1a pullup bar next to my computer is good for guilt tripping yourself into getting excercise

Exercise isn't fun until you discover endorphines. There's nothing like the feeling of breaking though the pain barrier when running, or mashing your muscles to a pulp with weights.- missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dunno, I like to feel the burn and use the spell check button.
- jayesbee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm not sure I would consider The South Beach diet a fad.... It suffers from a bad name, but it was developed by a cardiologist and advocates lean meats, "good fats" in moderation, whole grains in moderation, and avoiding processed foods as much as possible.

- PSPon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Skinny Nerd Guide?
- ddxChrist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3These recent health articles have been quite lame, uninformative, or simply inaccurate.
Saying "20% exercise, 80% diet" is just wrong. You want a healthy diet to begin with, and from there you can exercise and reduce caloric intake to lose mass (you'll lose muscle as well due to necessary conversions to glucose, but predominantly fat).
While I don't aim for weight loss, as that isn't a concern for me, exercise is still crucial. I don't do cardio at this stage because it conflicts with muscle gain, but for someone trying to lose weight it is incredibly beneficial. The best time to do it is in the morning, before eating. The energy will be derived from bodily stores, eventually coming from fat.
Also, I'd recommend weight training to boost your metabolism. Whereas aerobic exercise is quick at depleting fat reserves, eventually increasing muscle mass will raise your metabolism and keep fat from returning. - zitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's rather funny that this points to a blog in a "Dental Resources Blog", but I've kept in shape up until recently by playing ice hockey. Yes, I still have all my teeth, though I have a few battle scars on my face.. ;) Some of the chicks dig that..
The only thing holding me back from playing at the moment is a shoulder injury and needing to replace my contacts. Oh, and switching jobs to a new company now. I do ice skate every week though.
I also already follow some of the steps in the entry, especially drinking water instead of Dr. Pepper these days. Heck, I've done some calculations in the past about drinking the recommend amount of iced water would burn about 100 calories a day just by itself...
So yeah, at 5'10" and 210 lbs, it would seem that I should be extremely overweight. Truthfully, though, that's only with around 17% body fat. I still want to bring that down, though. - humblepatience, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Here's my guide and you don't need to digg to read it and like it, in order of importance.
1. Start jogging. When you are out of shape and you can't run a mile but you try to do it every day you will change your own life eventually because your weakness will be so pronounced. The pain of being out of shape yet jogging 3 times a week pushing your limits will force you to change.
2. Quit Smoking (easier after you start jogging, becuase it's embarrassing).
3. Stop drinking Juice, Coffee, and especially Soda. Drink water and green tea plain, and I like milk with dinner. If you drink say 3 of these things a day that's around 500 calories, a week that's 3500 calories = 1 lb of fat/week.
4. Use http://www.thedailyplate.com, a free web 2.0 way to monitor calorie intake and expenditure, and monitor everything you eat so you can see how many calories you eat a day and how many you should eat to lose 2 lbs or whatever per week. EX: I'm 210 lbs, live sedentary lifestyle - 2200 calories needed per day, or 1700 to lose 2 lbs per week.
5. Try to do like 60 pushups and 60 crunches a night.
6. After a while get a gym membership and start weight training 3 times a week, arms/chest back/shoulder legs/abs jogging 4 or 5 times a week while monitorying calorie intake with a high protien medium carb medium calorie diet. - looselips, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There really is no secret diet. From experience all you really need to do is eat less calories. You can eat sweets and favorites but they need to be in a portion or less.
Start reading the nutritional facts on the side of packages and try to convince yourself to eat less of the really bad stuff.
Bad stuff= any trans fat, saturated fats, high Total Fat, or high Carbohydrate drinks ( including some regular beer, and all sodas.)
Always only snack on a portion. Put a handful of chips, candy, etc.. on a paper plate. Gradually reduce how many times you rely on these items.
For those times you "NEED!!" something, try lemonade, or some other natural suppressant. I like "fruit and nut" granola bars to tide me over until I can eat a meal.
This change got me to lose 40 lbs without much exercise in 9 months. The weight comes off slowly and naturally without effort.
I no longer rely on sugar and caffeine to get me by, and I feel better for it.
Free advice for all cool digg members, for the others, I doubt anything will ever help. Loose ten pounds.. cut off ur head..- missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you're snacking to hold you over until a meal, try to stay away from candy, chips, etc. Also, don't touch the granola bars. Those things have so much salt and sugar, you might as well eat a bag of m&ms. Have a sandwich.
Everyone gripes at you to eat breakfast because it helps a lot. Boil an egg, have some wheat toast with some jelly or whatever crap you like on it. You're generally better off if you stay away from breakfast cereal due to the sugar and salt. If your goal is to lose pounds, you don't want salt holding the water in you. Those things are loaded. Go on, check and see.
When you get some time on the weekend or the evening, make lunch for a day or two in advance, and cut up some fruit or vegetables and seal them in individual baggies for snacking. You're going to be much less inclined to grab a cheeseburger or something from the vending machine when you get hungry if something's already prepared for you. Take some carrots; your dentist will love you. ;)
Keep hydrated. Part of the reason you get so tired and have to rely on caffeine is because your body wants water. Also, a lot of people are so dehydrated, they mistake thirst for hunger. Sounds crazy, but your body gets confused at some point.
- missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you're snacking to hold you over until a meal, try to stay away from candy, chips, etc. Also, don't touch the granola bars. Those things have so much salt and sugar, you might as well eat a bag of m&ms. Have a sandwich.
- kenearle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"You can burn calories just by drinking water."
You can burn a few calories with a glass of water. But there are about three million calories in a pound of fat. This sounds dangerous. Any volunteers? - Jack9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I got a personal trainer. Problem solved. This guide is about as useful as lay off the candybars. Oh yeah, lay off the candybars.
- david76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Losing weight is about making adjustments to diet and exercise. It's not complicated. Take something simple like breakfast. I went from two eggs (egg beaters) and two slices of toast (one w/ jelly) every morning to a bowl of oatmeal. That's a 400 calorie difference. Roughly equivilent to walking two miles every day. I also walk for 30 minutes a day at a 4mph pace up hill. On top of that, I started cooking dinner (lots of chicken, salad and veggies) and eating simple sandwiches for lunch. I've gone from 185 lbs to 160 lbs and lost 4 inches around the waist in a few months. Clothes fit better, I have more energy and I feel better.
A few small changes can have a big impact over time. Start with something simple, like changing your breakfast. Then add exercise. Then start cooking dinners for yourself.- ISIfunded911, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Except burned cereals like oatmeal are bad for health: carcinogenic, like everything burned.
And for children, they can have a bad influence on the expression of the genes that govern the development of the skull and jaws/teeth: narrower skulls, misplaced teeth.

- evanwolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The universal rule seems to be: pay attention to your diet and exercise.
Paying attention all the time, every day, gets you 99% of the way.
Paying attention is hard at first, like learning a new language, or learning to think in a new discipline, or wear high heels for the first time. It hurts and you want to avoid it. But turning your everyday routine into a hundred conscious decisions is supposed to be uncomfortable and make you squirm. Again and again until new habits are formed, until the behavior you've consciously chosen becomes routine and you don't think as hard or as often about diet and exercise.
Any basically sound approach will fail unless adopted and implemented.
So pay attention.
Anyway, the most compelling weight loss tool for me is standing on a scale in front of a full length mirror with my clothes off. Highly motivational. - bloatedpickle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used to work out a lot in college and after. I was in decent shape. Not real big or anything like that, but I had soccer stamina and good overall fitness level.
Fast forward after 10 years of computer use, and I am in pathetic shape. I found running to no longer work for me so I took up casual biking. Much more enjoyable and you can work up your fitness level fairly easily. It will be really hard to stick to a regimen I will guarantee you that. I have felt pretty sick lately after short work outs. I use to work out for a couple of hours with no problem....Now it is 20 minutes and slight nausea. Best of luck and try a mountain bike on the road. It worked for me in 2001 out in Denver. Of course Denver has these awesome bike trails through the city like no where else I have ever been. Riding around the city in Raleigh or Charlotte, well, it sucks because ignorant people will get mad at people on a bike. - eyalnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This "article" has been exposed as blog-spam at:

http://thelwsealsshow.blogspot.com/2008/07/weight- ...
I know one tip they could use. Stop eating McDonalds all the time, and they should be just fine. I don't see many "geeks" who need to go on diets anyway... - aptekarschik, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0http://www.buy-pillss.com
