/had to be done, sorry. - inactive, on 12/03/2008, -0/+9Doctors are way too quick to diagnose people with ADHD!
- Twikkert, on 12/03/2008, -0/+7When I was in second grade, my teacher thought I had ADHD.
So because she went to the principal, without having ever consulted my parents beforehand to discuss it, I was thrown into a psychiatrist's office for the next year and a half. I was only 6, maybe 7.
I got lucky. I ended up not having to take drugs. But I understand how quick to medicate our schools and culture has become. This was back in '96 or '97. - 80hd, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5I wonder sometimes if the manufacturer of Ritalin didn't hire 'scientists' based on their ability to write broad ranged symptoms that will be treated. I mean think about it, if you as a drug manufacturer can treat a 'disease' that a large portion of society has, it's going to be very profitable.

well, heart disease, among others.... - Lucas123, on 12/03/2008, -2/+5I know hyperactivity has been around for decades, if not centuries, but it seems to me ADHD is a more serious form of this. That, along with all the allergies, asthma, and other genetic abnormalities we're seeing in today's children, leads me to wonder what the heck we're putting into our environment that is affecting babies today -- seems like there some causality here.
When I was in school in the 1970s, I can't think of a single kid who was allergic to peanuts. Today, it seems like an epidemic.
And, don't get me started on over medicating our children. I can't even imagine what physical issues this may someday cause them to suffer. - BuckNutty, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I wouldn't be surprised if there's a direct correlation with the rise in pre-packaged foods, fast food, and preservative chemicals and kids eating the wrong foods at a very early age. And throw in the pesticides and other things food get treated with before it hits the grocery store. No one person is the same so it's not a stretch to say people are predisposed to acquiring different conditions so it kind of makes sense. For something like ADHD, you need a long monitoring period with various tests to get it into the right ballpark.
The quick medication fix is crazy. - manzplan, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I bet if they changed the name BACK to "Minimal Brain Disorder" parents and kids would stop finding reasons to use this as an excuse for stuff..
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1time-released 30mg aderall is like crack. my favorite crack in the world. of course, if i needed it, that might not ring so true
- ltbtb, on 12/03/2008, -1/+2now THAT makes sense...so does the pony story.
