- IgorUnchained, on 03/17/2009, -7/+70GREAT article!
Although this is common sense stuff to anyone who has had any experience with marijuana or marijuana smokers, it is obvious that it isnt getting through to very many people outside of "the choir".
As for addiction, marijuana doesnt really belong in the same sentence with that word. - nesagwa, on 03/17/2009, -0/+48It isnt physically addicting. There you go.
So that means its about as addicting as posting on Digg or playing WOW. - unfilterthought, on 03/17/2009, -3/+47"If drugs can't be kept out of prisons, how can you possibly keep them out of a mostly free society?"
Bullseye. - harrisbradley, on 03/17/2009, -4/+47I am a catholic for cannabis, and am currently giving up pot for Lent. I typically smoke several times every single day, and have for over 15 years. Last year I gave up cigarettes for Lent. There is such a stark difference between my urges to smoke cigarette during that time, and my urges to smoke dope right now. This is the first time in my 15 year career that I stopped smoking pot for any period of time, and it was extremely simple; I just did it. I have thought about it once or twice, and that's mainly because I have a bunch of cadbury eggs and got Gears of War 2 in the mail (that'll make sense to some of you I hope, but I digress..). When I stopped smoking cigarettes I was constantly thinking of excuses why I deserved/needed a cig, and had tremendously awful physical withdrawals. It was a tough period to put it mildly. I think someone who has been smoking everyday for 15 years, who can just decided to quit says something.
- hooah212002, on 03/17/2009, -2/+36Saying Marijuana is a gateway drug is like saying a drivers license is a gateway tool to Nascar.
- Sporky023, on 03/17/2009, -4/+36I have to admit, I've got a problem with marijuana. When I first started smoking, it was great - it showed me a new state of consciousness and that alone made it worth the try. But that was as a teenager. Now I'm in my mid-twenties, and if someone offers I usually smoke. But it makes me really untalkative - to the point where I contribute exactly zero to every conversation - and incredibly socially anxious. Yet somehow, I seek it out, keep torturing myself with it. Now, it's different than cigarettes, to which I'm also addicted. Cigarettes are addictive in a really direct, dopaminergic way. If I don't smoke for a couple of days I get the shakes and have pains in my chest. Pot's more about my not wanting to give up my attachment to something.
We're not children. Legalize drugs. - Sansui, on 03/17/2009, -1/+28I'm 'hooked' on coffee. If I don't have my coffee in the morning, I freak the ***** out. Last week I ran out of coffee filters..... it was almost armageddon. I finally found some cheesecloth and saved the day.
I bet you use the internet every day? Are you 'hooked' on it? That could be unhealthy my friend! Here, let me regulate your internet useage, and everything will be ok. - inactive, on 03/17/2009, -11/+36Addiction is for the weak-willed.
I've quit marijuana 32 times this year alone. - Vaiper, on 03/17/2009, -0/+23I know a lot of people that are hooked on video games too. Seriously. I understand you are trying to help people but sometimes everyone just needs to STFU and mind your own god damn business. Your neighbor being "addicted" to weed will NEVER cause you any harm. Worry about YOURSELF. This is not a hard concept but for some reason the majority of people are still "being stupid". You included.
- 3Y3CON, on 03/17/2009, -5/+28Digg loves marijuana. Or perhaps just legalization? Either way marijuana stories always make front page, not there's anything wrong with that!
- supferrets, on 03/17/2009, -0/+21People still believe this ***** nowadays. Don't be a troll.
- meruru, on 03/17/2009, -0/+19I've never done marijuana in my life, but even I think your argument is stupid. People can get "Hooked" on ANYTHING. Videogames, sex, tv, digg, the internet, basically anything that gives anyone pleasure. Should we ban all pleasurable activities because some people might take it too far?
- RooC10, on 03/17/2009, -0/+17It's habit forming. After doing anything for an extended period of time that gives you such a good feeling it is difficult to stop. But you just need to remember that actually stopping is no where near as difficult as drugs that it is supposably similar to. Habitually smoking is the same in my mind as habitually eating donuts. After stopping you may crave just one more, but it is a bond that can be broken with a minimal amount of self-control.
- c010rb1indusa, on 03/17/2009, -1/+18Actually coffee is physically addicting and people who drink it regularly may get headaches, sweating, shaking, or extreme drowsiness if they don't get their cup of jo in the morning. Your body actually builds a dependence for the caffeine. Marijuana however, is only mentally addicting, therefor people don't get addicted to it because the drug ITSELF is addicting, they get addicted to it because of their genetic disposition, which is 10-15% of the population supposedly, or because of external factors. Why should 10% ruin it for everybody else, people who smoke weed casually and don't really do any harm. That's like sayings free speech should be illegal because 10-15% of the population preaches hate, which is roughly true for the most part. Legalize it!
- Floydian08, on 03/17/2009, -0/+16@ Reefer madness depicting African Americans and Mexicans as the main problem.
We live in the 21st century; we need to lose these unjustifiable, and also racist, thought forms of the 20th century. Unfortunately -some- people still think this way...
"The sheer number of newspapers, tabloids, magazines and film reels that Hearst controlled enabled him to quickly and to effectively inundate American media with this propaganda. Hearst preyed on existing prejudices by associating cannabis with Mexican workers who threatened to steal American jobs and African-Americans who had long been the subject of white American venom " - http://www.reefermadness.org/propaganda/essay.html - 911ducktail, on 03/17/2009, -3/+19It's a gateway drug in that the majority of users who purchase it from a dealer are exposed to other substances as a result of having to purchase it on the black market. not that getting stoned means you want to go shoot heroin.
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -0/+14People can be "hooked" to just about anything. What's your friggin' point? Hell, you basically just attacked everyone with a hobby with your idiotic statement.
- hooah212002, on 03/17/2009, -0/+13That does NOT make it a gateway drug moron. That just means that teenagers want to get ***** up and party. (I was a teenager once...long ago, and thats exactly what i did.) Never once would I attribute any of the other drugs I tried to having smoked weed. I would attribute it to....I WANNA GET ***** UP!!!!!!!
There is a higher likelihood of a teen getting into mom and dads oxycodone or whatever antidepressant drugs they have, than they do getting addicted to weed.
Get off your high horse, come down and mingle with middle America. We smoke pot because *gasp* it chills us the ***** out, and its nice to relax with a joint once in a while. (oh how I wish I could, though. Stupid job and drug testing) Nonetheless, I will fight for the right to do so. - feignNU, on 03/17/2009, -0/+13Brushing my teeth isn't addictive! I should know, I've been brushing my teeth every day since I got big enough to hold a toothbrush (and before that, my parents helped me out with it), and I'm not addicted at all!
You're trying to prove a point, but all you're proving is your own ignorance of what addiction is. - bjs3171, on 03/17/2009, -2/+13honestly, for the first time ever, i can see the war on drugs ending within 10 years. Obama just ended the raids on medical marijuana. This essentially means that the States have a right to govern their own drug laws. I doubt it will be long before one state just says "***** it", and legalizes the stuff completely. Coffee Shops will crop up, tourism will skyrocket, and they'll make tons of money. After that, it'll go like dominoes.
- ElBarbarossa, on 03/17/2009, -0/+11I can share a similar experience. Started smoking pot in high school and loved it. Loved it in college too. Until my junior year when I realized that it had started to made me anti-social and awkward when I smoked it, even around my best friends. The hardest part was passing on that first bowl. I was very accustomed to going through the motions, and it was difficult to initially break the pattern. However, after I passed for the first time, it got easier and easier. I got used to feeling good around people. I made more friends, and I got laid WAY more. I still smoke occasionally, but now it's usually only when I'm by myself, or late at night when I'm drinking with friends and we're about to watch a movie or something.
So I totally agree...Legalize it and let us make our own decisions. But, I also encourage you to pass on that bowl the next time it comes around. - odigity, on 03/17/2009, -4/+14Now, next year, for Lent, try quitting catholicism. :)
- LogicBomB, on 03/17/2009, -1/+11I bet there was waaaaaay too much talk about aboloshing slavery. Maybe that should have given it a rest?
- purkel, on 03/17/2009, -0/+10marijuana is less intoxicating than alcohol. why dont people consider alcohol a gateway drug?
- rhapsody1447, on 03/17/2009, -3/+12This article hits the nail on the head. So many people believe that smoking marijuana will automatically lead to heavy marijuana use (along with harder drug abuse), while the truth is that heavy marijuana users would be "hooked" (psychologically) to something else if it wasn't marijuana. It has nothing to do with the plant itself. Realistically coffee has a stronger hold on a larger percent of Americans lives anyway.
- ggfobster, on 03/17/2009, -0/+9Yeah, that line is what brought me in the comments section to post. Such a good observation that is easily overlooked, and yet, makes so much sense it should be common sense to everyone.
- jcsoc, on 03/17/2009, -2/+11You might as well face it you're addicted to love!
- petebot, on 03/17/2009, -0/+8Hearst...that *****.
- Corman420, on 03/17/2009, -5/+13I love marijuana.. How would my life be without Mary Jane? I probably wouldn't eat so many munchies, or do as much programming... Maybe I'd play a sport other than hit the bong?
Regardless of the article, I live in Canada - and honestly, I've been smoking it for years - and never been hassled - except once, by my high school music teacher... He was upset because this time, I went to his clas TOO high... A little high was ok though.. Bu that was years ago - do they still not care? Or is it worse now becuase of all the censorship ***** that's shading today's teens from real life?? No wonder they are smokign crack instead of pot - they think it's no different!!!
Dont forget to bring a towel! - Ugoff, on 03/17/2009, -0/+8Of course Hearst was behind this. He has got to be one of the scummiest Americans to have ever lived. Drive racist fears into Americans in order to sell a few papers. You can thank Hearst for these ridiculous Marijuana laws, and thank him for the ***** state of journalism in this country.
- Frankyfan3, on 03/17/2009, -0/+8each city has their own organization going on. You should be able to find contact information for your area here:

http://stopthedrugwar.org/ - Frankyfan3, on 03/17/2009, -1/+9Seriously. Cannabis in particular, a very pervasive plant will only be eradicated when we have nuked every living thing on the planet.
- feignNU, on 03/17/2009, -1/+9MOST teens? That's just a bald faced lie.
- teknomaker18, on 03/17/2009, -1/+8Alright. So if it's a gateway drug where are all the heroin addicts considering most of us have tried it?
- buckrogers1965, on 03/17/2009, -0/+7I agree, it is completely sad that propaganda from the 1930's still needs debunked. What the hell are they teaching kids in school?
- nepidae, on 03/17/2009, -0/+7Thats how I feel about WoW :) I think we all have our vices that are tougher to control than others.
- unjustend, on 03/17/2009, -0/+7Never mind the people who have it once or twice a year. Their lives are obviously ruined.
- unjustend, on 03/17/2009, -1/+8Punching the driver is safer than letting him get away with being a douche.
- akshay626, on 03/17/2009, -1/+8Ummm... Caffeine is very addicting, probably the most addictive drug after opiates and nicotine.
- twinklyJesus, on 03/17/2009, -0/+7Coffee? Try Beer.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 03/17/2009, -1/+7:D I was socially and possibly mentally addicted. I quit on my first try... I was 18, noticed i was willing to steal for it, dropping out of things, and my entire life revolved around it and i was giving myself panic attacks and headaches with it and one day i just stopped. I havent smoked since July 2003. I hold no animosity towards the plant or my best friends who, smoke constantly. The difference between them and i, is i have poor impulse control and pot just isn't for me. If someone like me can make that distinction then Pot is obviously not a huge Danger in terms of addiction. I think anti-pot advocates tend to link weakmindedness to physical addiction.
- ShoujoKakumei, on 03/18/2009, -0/+6I know more than a few people who've repeatedly tried, and failed, to quit playing World of Warcraft. As a regular user of both, I would argue that WoW is more addictive than weed.
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -1/+7Dugg for towelie.
- Frankyfan3, on 03/17/2009, -4/+10The Global Marijuana March is May 2nd 2009
Find one in your city. :) - diggydougie, on 03/17/2009, -4/+10I'm addicted to caffeine, and others are to tobacco or alcohol. Addiction should not be the criteria for making something illegal.
- Sporky023, on 03/17/2009, -0/+6I wish everyone drove stoned. We'd all move slower and nobody would really care enough about a yellow light to flick anyone off.
- Sporky023, on 03/17/2009, -0/+6Thanks dude. I too have experimented with just passing it on, and it has been remarkable. But I'm also sort of loath to drop the habit. It's like an old friend, almost, that I don't find interesting any more but still care about. I know that's ridiculous.
This does seem to be a common story, though. I find this in itself academically interesting. I'm amazed that there are people who can smoke up and be all full of energy and talkative and everything.
Perhaps one of my reasons for putting off the quitting is that one part of me thinks I've just fallen into some sort of a pattern but it doesn't have to be that way. Sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy, and if I can just retrain my brain I can get back to the point where it loosens me up but doesn't totally pulverize me. That may not be possible though, I quite simply don't know. - abizzy, on 03/17/2009, -1/+6LOL! Skool you mean. If we could use help anywhere it's clearly in teaching our children to not make the same mistakes as in our past. But critical thinking is just too low on the list of things to teach... getting an A is more important than understanding why we try to get A's at all. Pathetic.
- hooah212002, on 03/17/2009, -0/+5Because then the snotty aristocrats wouldn't be able to drink their 1876 Chianti. They run the country.
- flashingcurser, on 03/17/2009, -0/+5If you could buy it at any grocery store and if the price of it had been pennies on the dollar of what you payed for it, would you still feel the same? Not a typical digg attack comment, just curious.
