- salinungatha, on 01/29/2009, -0/+23A salient reminder of how good we really have it these days when all speak of doom and gloom around us.
Flush toilets, reliable medicine, internet, beds, couches, electricity, librarys, food abundance. Most poor in the western world live better than kings of old (comfort wise). - jemka, on 01/29/2009, -1/+20So, where's the e-book version? I have some surgery to perform.
- inactive, on 01/29/2009, -0/+13Wise words. People who whine about how much better things used to be before we got all civilized need to shut up.
- navidb, on 01/29/2009, -0/+13that wasnt as sweet as i thought it would be
- inactive, on 01/29/2009, -0/+10Hint: use a current manual to sew the limb back on.
- clickmyface, on 01/29/2009, -1/+10The 18TH CENTURY? Holy f*cking ***** my brothers going to be pissed. I'll be right back........
- m00n1, on 01/29/2009, -0/+8Very true. My grandmother died of a relatively simple infection in about 1946 (penicillin had just been discovered but wasn't widely available). We really do have it good.
- Medicamusic, on 01/29/2009, -0/+7I dont care how they found it- i just want to know what it says in it
- bmystry, on 01/29/2009, -1/+6The Romans had a bunch of those things as well though not as sophisticated and no electricity of course. In fact much of the medical tools used today are very similar to the tools used by the Romans- it all went down hill during the dark ages and then people had to start over so its only recently with the aid of small medical devices and fancy gadgets that any impressive medical progress has been done.
- NicoNicoNico, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4To be fair, you could just bury it. If enough people did that, it wouldn't be on the front page.
I personally think it's morbid curiosity, like, "Oh, the Daily Mail. Let's see what sort of things they made up for today." - Armor1901, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4To hell with that, let my ass die. Surgery in the 18th century? No thanks.
- Jamiekin, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4I wonder what surgeons / synthetic android robot doctors a few centuries from now will think of today's practices.... I mean, a root canal and wisdom teeth removal is pretty barbaric.
- Flamekebab, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3"The risk of dying from infection was greatly reduced from 1867 when Joseph Lister introduced carbolic acid as an effective anti-sceptic."
Noun
antisceptic (plural antisceptics)
Someone who is opposed to scepticism.
It's a tiny article and yet no one at the Daily Mail noticed that glaring error?
I'd still find it annoying if it was someone's blog, but come on, this is a national newspaper with a circulation in excess of two million! - ixenn, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3This was slightly boring, until I thought about someone rapidly cutting my arm off with a serrated blade and being able to feel every god damn thing. I then began to cry.
- brownspank, on 01/30/2009, -0/+3Not a lot of Dr. Nick fans here. Then again, it's "Hi, everybody!"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Nick_Riviera - inactive, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3Oh christ, I can't even imagine the amount of pain I'd be in. Maybe we should ask that fella who chopped his pinned arm off with a penknife when he was trapped in the wilderness? Even something as simple as a little dentistry would have been agonizing! I remember getting a tooth pulled when I was 8 years old, it hurt like hell, and that was WITH anesthetic.
Leeches, scarification, bloodletting, and drinking broths made of various ground up animals and herbs. Also smears and ointments made from things we all now know to be toxic. And then there's the good old fashioned cure-all that is prayer.... Yep, I'm glad I live in this day and age. - lordmike, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3Sounds like my HMO Plan's Summary Description....
- Frostek, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3Pretty much. I expect we'll be able to grow new teeth buds in the next few years, as long as we keep the research going.
- inactive, on 01/29/2009, -5/+7Get this TABLOID crap off the front page! I've had enough with dailymail already!
- FordSVT1, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2"Leeches, scarification, bloodletting, and drinking broths made of various ground up animals and herbs. Also smears and ointments made from things we all now know to be toxic. And then there's the good old fashioned cure-all that is prayer...."
Sounds like a Baptist convention. - Dumbledorito, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2I think it's in the tool department at Home Depot, which is convenient if you need to pick up a few surgical supplies.
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2then ***** off, simple.
- BobSlefty, on 01/29/2009, -0/+1FTA : The risk of dying from infection was greatly reduced from 1867 when Joseph Lister introduced carbolic acid as an effective anti-sceptic.
hmm.. maybe.. but I'm sure there were still plenty of doubters even after that... - Speed, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Until you can get it right, buried.
- yosserhughes, on 01/29/2009, -2/+3Have you noticed how many people are jumping on the 'Dailt-Mail-bury-it', bandwagon these days? I think they saw a digger post a similar comment a while back, thought it was uber cool and now bury any Mail article just because.
Here's a clue, if you don't like the Mail: don't read it. - anotherjack, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1By the way, that is what is in chlora-septic. The throat spray.
- diggThis77, on 01/29/2009, -0/+1I was going to say that it's amazing the amount of progress we've made since then. Nice to see after reading the article and seeing that past 1867 not much has changed other than it's more refined. Ah progress....
- brownspank, on 01/30/2009, -1/+1PDF or GTFO.
- SirFink, on 01/30/2009, -1/+1Suddenly I'm not half the man I used to be... because I'm an amputee.
- inactive, on 01/29/2009, -4/+1Has anyone told you you're a ***** lately? Nah, I'm just kiddin', your a good kid midnight.
- MidnightRIder77, on 01/29/2009, -4/+1Has anyone told you you're an ***** lately?
- darkmaninperth, on 01/29/2009, -7/+4Hello Everybody!!!
- Deveak, on 01/29/2009, -11/+7daily fail, buried. I don't care if its correct or not i refuse to read that online rag.
- inactive, on 01/29/2009, -8/+0"And yet having gone through that awful ordeal there was then a very high risk of death from infection." Going through all that terrible pain only to die after. Ha.
- dawaza, on 01/29/2009, -9/+1 It's quiet in here... can you hear the echo?

What is Digg?
