- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -4/+82I find it amusing that it's an article about driving on womansday.com
- pathouston22, on 06/29/2009, -5/+44This map makes no sense. The colors are not coordinated to "Number of Drunk Driving-Related Fatalities per 100,000 people in 2006", they are by "Percentage of adults who report drinking".
What the hell is report drinking? - ILoveBoobies, on 06/29/2009, -2/+27Worst...Chart....Ever...
- snobrder218, on 06/29/2009, -0/+19Ya, but observe that we're not even ranked in that top 10 for kills per 100,000 people. Just because more adults admit to drinking here, doesn't mean that they're all drunk driving.
- nuggsgalore, on 06/29/2009, -2/+19Wow looks like people from Tennessee and W. Virginia like to lie about drinking....
- UchinaNIMH, on 06/29/2009, -0/+17Yeah as a Wisconsin native I can attest to this everyone drinks and everyone drinks alot.
- UchinaNIMH, on 06/29/2009, -3/+18Not really. Wisconsinites are just skilled at drunken driving, they have been training for it all their lives.
- SecretCow, on 06/29/2009, -0/+15The people of Wisconsin are not alcoholics, we are professionals. ( <3 Lewis Black )
- mrfritz, on 06/29/2009, -0/+14Or we are just better at drunk driving
- bramcantwatch, on 06/29/2009, -0/+14Holy Smokes! And Wisconsin is famous for their cheese?
- Mayday, on 06/29/2009, -0/+13Having lived in South Dakota I can say a huge cause of drinking and driving is a lack of public transportation. Obviously since it's a rural state the costs of implementing public transportation are not really feasible. I'm in no way trying to justify drinking and driving but people are going to drink and since public transportation is essentially non existent a higher percentage of people also own vehicles. It's also a lot easier to rationalize driving over walking when it's January and 20 below with a foot of snow on the ground.
- malechite, on 06/29/2009, -0/+12I'm from Wisconsin...Yes we drink ALOT. I saw this article title, and said to myself "I bet Wisconsin is pretty high"
then i see that the map is misleading and lebeled "percentage who report drinking"
Well of course wisconsin is #1 - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -2/+13the laws are loose in Wisco because of the Miller lobbying power
- joeliscool92, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9good ole wisconsin
- litkaj, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9Cheese and beer. You forgot about the beer.
- twishart, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9Well, I'll be sure not to drink and drive in THOSE states, then.
- TyrantJoe, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9Being from Wisconsin, drinking is such commonplace that it surprised me that other states have less than even 50% drinking rate. Literally every adult I know drinks, and at least 3/4 of the underage people I know.
- sinurgy, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8So the deadliest state of all, Wyoming, has about 13 fatalities per 100,000 people?! So that's what, .00013%. I know it's not politically correct but if drinking and driving is so massively dangerous, why are the numbers so low? Listening to MADD you'd think most people who drive above the legal limit either kill someone or themselves when in reality that is apparently extremely rare.
- Bitties, on 06/29/2009, -1/+9Ah you beat me to it, I was going to ask the same thing.
- goobly, on 06/29/2009, -1/+9Hick states? I don't understand why it's still acceptable to be vocally prejudiced against people because of their socioeconomic class or where they were born. Grow the ***** up, seriously.
- SamSks, on 06/29/2009, -1/+9Utah, Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia all are 'A's. Utah I get - Mormons don't drink alcohol or coffee. But the other three? And Tennessee and Kentucky the home of Bourbon and Jack Daniels - WTF!
I guess, if you have a great bottle of bourbon at home, there's no point in driving. - parkskier426, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8As a student at UW Madison, I can attest to the fact that way more people drink and drive then almost anywhere else I've been. I got pulled into the idea that it wasn't that big of a deal as long as you aren't wasted... until I got a DUI. Seriously though, don't drink and drive. It's not worth it.
- matthewkg, on 06/29/2009, -1/+7Blind leading the blind.
- devilgoob, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6Spotted Cow > then your beer.
doesn't have an alcohol rating and a 6 pack is equal to about 12. - lukemit, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6We prefer our cheese deep-fried and beer-battered.
- loneraver, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6And Spotted Cow!
- pstroll, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5Top 10 states with nothing going on
- mulletman13, on 06/29/2009, -5/+10I live in Wisconsin and I hate it; so I drink.
Apparently 65+% of the population also agrees with me. - sh0x, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5La Crosse, Wisconsin at one time held the world's record for longest unbroken strip of bars. So yeah, they're famous for drinking too.
- loneraver, on 06/29/2009, -1/+6Can we help it if Wisconsin has amazing beer?
- loneraver, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5dugg for spotted cow
- MisterEX, on 06/29/2009, -1/+6Makes sense, considering the Jack Daniel's Distillery in Lynchburg, TN is in a "dry" county.
- wiggles, on 06/29/2009, -1/+6No, laws are loose in Wisconsin because of the heavy northern European immigrant population - mostly Germans and Swedes. Drinking is more accepted into the culture up there. They went kicking and screaming to the 21 drinking age, and even then, many bars don't enforce it, many cops look the other way, and many loopholes exist in the law even if it was strictly enforced. Underagers in Wisconsin can drink if they're married and their spouse is of age, can drink at the bar with their parents, etc.
They do have a large drunk driving problem -- I'm surprised that they didn't make the top 10 per capita as the infographic suggests. http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/safety/motorist/drunk ... - UchinaNIMH, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4Professional Drinkers thats for sure, only way that map makes sense as we drink the most and dont kill people drunk driving
- ousthouse, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4Of course, drunk driving is a beautiful thing when done in the proper context.
- esteeh, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4surprised CA isn't high up there. A friend of mine has had two drunk driving accidents in the last two years! The drunk driver being the ones who hit her.
- nickaster, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4Thank you for noticing this. It seems like the dots are the ten worst states. It's kind of misleading as the colors are adults who "report drinking". I find it hard to believe those numbers. I think Wisconsin is just being more honest!
- sodade, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4And we are supposed to believe that only 25-35% of West Virginians drink alcohol?
Maybe they don't want ATF figuring out that they have stills? - MisterEX, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4Sounds like the argument for teaching safe sex. Well done.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4"/s"
Maybe you should have read the whole thing? - sikedsyko, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4College Station, TX has the highest DUI rate in the country
- socialpyramid, on 06/29/2009, -2/+5My home state (Indiana) looks like a bunch of pussies compared to their neighbors.
- Bitties, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Mormons are keeping Utah safe it appears.
- Asvetic, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Interesting though, apparently the further you live from the equator, the more you drink... there appears to be a correlation between cold climates and booze? That or people in the South lie, a lot.
- RumpleForeskin3, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Jack Daniels distillery is in a dry county
- CourageWulf, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3She wrote this article from her laptop while driving. (The image was probably made by a man)
- migitalwarfare, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Note how many of the uptight bible belt states made the top 10. Just goes to show you that if you're a little more relaxed about allowing your kids to drink underage, and make sure they're doing it responsibly, they'll be more responsible about it when they're adults. If you lay the hammer down on your kids, they're still gonna do it, they're just going to do it without you there to guide them to responsible drinking.
It's called parenting, no amount of laws will ever replace it's influence. - nickaster, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3I can't believe the other states are so low. My interpretation is that Wisconsin is just being more honest when they answer the question!
- mwerb6, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3the /s didn't appear on your screen i see
- oldhick, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3It was a joke.
