- LeechesOfKarma, on 04/19/2009, -0/+38Great, I've been looking for a reason to start back up.
- ColoursInMyHead, on 04/19/2009, -0/+34Well I may not get cancer... but it appears I'm pregnant!
- JimmyTheClam, on 04/20/2009, -3/+18And the tobacco haters are out in force after only two comments.
lettruthout, did you stop to consider that if this test could have saved your father? - inactive, on 04/20/2009, -4/+15Just because you won't get lung cancer doesn't mean you won't get all sorts of other nasty diseases.
- talkingwires, on 04/20/2009, -2/+13Well, my grandparents and great-grandparents all died of either cancer, Alzheimer's, chronic liver disease, or rheumatoid arthritis. And of the three, I'll pick cancer as the most graceful way out.
/me lights a smoke and sips on a beer - AFHeretic, on 04/20/2009, -2/+11I smoke on occasion. Like when I am drunk and at a party.
Somebody complained about smokers outdoors and it being a hazard, quit bitching.
We all agree smoking is bad, but who really wants to live to 100 when your decreped and unable to have any bodily function working properly. - WildBil, on 04/20/2009, -1/+10Insurance rate hike excuse
- RebornInFlames, on 04/20/2009, -0/+8lol 3-4 a month you have no problem. I'm not a doctor but I know the air in an average city does more damage over a month than 3-4 smokes.
- paulmer2003, on 04/20/2009, -0/+6Anyone here a doctor? How bad it is it to have an occasional (say, 3-4 cigarettes a month) if you are a young person in relatively good health who doesn't have a family history of cancer/cardiovascular problems/etc?
- chogie, on 04/20/2009, -1/+7You can't smoke on planes because fire and planes tend to not mix well.
- OneAndOnlyEBZ, on 04/20/2009, -0/+5Dugg down for misspelling "Smoking", Mr. Reformed Smoker
- nextse7en, on 04/20/2009, -0/+5I'm not brand,
I'm Chris. - lolque, on 04/20/2009, -2/+7Because your father is all of them. He represents every single smoker ever. That makes PERFECT sense. Thanks for enlightening me.
- inactive, on 04/20/2009, -0/+5I remember reading a statistic that showed that only 10-15% of all chronic smokers end up with lung cancer. The reason why it's a risk factor is because almost 80% of lung cancer occurs in smokers.
Grandma smoked for 50 years, dad smoked for 25, both no signs of cancer. I know two ladies that died of lung cancer and never smoked at all! - FreddieD, on 04/20/2009, -1/+6I'd like to take this test, even though I am not (nor ever will be) a smoker. My dad and two aunts died of lung cancer, and all smoked, so I am real curious if this is hereditary. Plus it will give me a lot of ammunition to dissuade my daughter to smoke when she grows up.
- palehorse864, on 04/20/2009, -2/+6Interesting. I've known people who died of complications from smoking, not just cancer but infaszema and the like.
Al Lewis (Grandpa Munster) and Fidel Castro though both smoked like chimneys, and both have been pretty long lived. Others like the Japanese Voice Actor Naya Goro (Who continues to play Zenigata in the Lupin III series (He's been in the series for about 41 years now) contract things like throat cancer. - Brassbud, on 04/20/2009, -2/+6Sweet, I'm going get this test once the cancer in my lungs clears up so I can see if I can start smoking!
- hendrixlives64, on 04/20/2009, -1/+5at first i was kind of excited... but really if you consider the result of this test a free pass to smoke like a bandit, you're probably going to die sooner from another smoking-related complication anyway. :(
although it'll be a great motivator for people who test high for this chemical to quit! - Fr4nk2012, on 04/20/2009, -0/+4That is exactly what I thought when I read this, but upon further thought I guess I'll stay quit.
I quit a two pack a day habit 2 years ago April 1st. I wish I never had. - GrooTheWanderer, on 04/20/2009, -5/+9The ones who inhale?
- dmightx, on 04/20/2009, -2/+6Thanks for letting us know you're biased.
- FreddieD, on 04/20/2009, -0/+4Bummer. I will have to wait for the next improvement in modern medicine, I suppose.
- WalkerTXclocker, on 04/20/2009, -0/+4FTA:
"The risk of lung cancer was 8.5 times higher in those who had the highest levels of this chemical, NNAL, 'AND' the highest nicotine levels."
"NNAL is created as the body metabolizes tobacco."
So, if you don't smoke the test is useless to you. - inactive, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3I used to smoke over a pack a day and sometimes twice that. I stopped smoking after 15 years by using Nicorette. I sound like one of those retarded testimonials on TV, but it's true. I'm so glad I quit. It's been six months and I am thankful every day.
- bobbi21, on 04/20/2009, -2/+5beer can lead to liver disease and smoking has been linked to alzheimer's

I hear heart attacks are a good way to go. Eat more big macs and hope you get a heart attack before a stroke :P - inactive, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3Sorry, not following WTF you're talking about.
but since when has smoking been a 'healthy' thing? - inactive, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3Yah, there's no cancer causing agents in marijuana at all. lol
- nemojonze, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3do you have another blog somewhere to take up my half-page?
- BassMasterP, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2Roll your own tobacco - bar none
When I don't have that, Marlboro Virginia Blend is the best "mainstream" stuff you can buy. - MacEnvy, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2*emphysema
- PopcornDave, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2Well ***** at that point, why not test for every disease you can get from just living?
- legom7, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2http://digg.com/people/Italian_scientist_turning_1 ...
- Rustymetal, on 04/20/2009, -3/+5That is correct, work in a nursing home for a week and you will be begging not to be a healthy 90 year old. Because most healthy 90 yr-old still can't wipe their ass.
- PopcornDave, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2*****?
- Gguillorn, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2Sure. "You're going to die of cancer. Betcha don't want a cigarette right about now, right?" That will work. It's like telling an alcoholic that his drinking has caused his wife to leave him. Chances are he's going to need a drink.
- johnsmith555, on 04/20/2009, -2/+4This doesn't apply to me, i only smoke cigars.
- Auzy, on 04/21/2009, -1/+2Chogie. Not just.. In many emergency situations, you would prefer the pilot who doesn't smoke, and doesn't hang around second-hand smoke for hours per day. Thats a guarantee. Because in the case of carbon monoxide poisoning, its kind of lame for the pilot to be the first to pass out, and the effects aren't always easily noticed (especially in some aircrafts where no indicator was brought along). Furthermore, at night, they can see, but not as well as non-smokers.
In fact, if I had my way, Commercial Medical certificates would not be issued to pilots at all who smoke. Last thing I want is a copilot who is more concerned about his nicotine fix then flying the plane.
But meh, not my problem anyway. No smoking in planes, and no more here in Clubs/pubs anyway (so it doesn't affect me). But you guys are free to do what you want. - WutDaHeckMan, on 04/20/2009, -0/+1this makes me want to smoke to see if I have the chemical in my pee
- ObamaYouth, on 04/20/2009, -1/+2this result isn't very helpful actually. it tells a smoker something like whether he has a 15% chance of getting lung cancer eventually - or 20%. without doing the test the chance (for male smokers) is known as 17.2%. therefore it doesn't sharpen the picture very much.
non smokers have a 1.3-1.4% chance of getting lung cancer.
non smokers live to eighty some years, smokers live to seventy some years, on average.
just some numbers to explain your anecdotes. - matt2m, on 04/20/2009, -0/+1I smoke 27s here too bro the best smoke rarely see people with em. They taste so damn good when I exhale through my nose. People that smoke em for the first time say its the best non menthol they have had. Sucks though it has brown sugar in it. Sugar + nicotine is bad, whatever chemical that sugar turns into when its burned amplifys nicotine. If i smoke like lets say a red I still find myself craving, because there is no sugar. I know I am never going to quit.
- bobbi21, on 04/20/2009, -1/+2This test is so we can screen for lung cancer in ppl who won't stop smoking.
As of now screening for lung cancer isn't very effective for smokers. Partly cus they got lots of other things wrong with the lungs that make you have to get pretty expensive tests to figure things out. Partly cus no one wants to irradiate you with a ton of CAT scans.
If we could figure out another factor that increases your risk, screening may actually become useful and may actually save some lives. - palehorse864, on 04/21/2009, -0/+1Thanks. I always start posts with a single letter and then edit them. The spellchecker wouldn't give me the correct spelling so I just went with what I had before time ran out.
And I'm not being sarcastic, I do mean that thanks. :) - badenglishihave, on 09/01/2009, -0/+1I liked the part where your comment was based on empirical evidence.
- nemojonze, on 04/20/2009, -0/+1Smoke up Johnny...
- badenglishihave, on 09/01/2009, -0/+1This is the problem with anti-tobacco ads. They don't take into account moderation and reasonable enjoyment from smoking. They try to make it sound like smoking once cuts your life by 40 years. Smoking a pack a day = bad (most likely.) Smoking 3-6 times a month = irrelevant.
Granted, I realize they are trying to stop kids from smoking but I'm really tired of the lies. - badenglishihave, on 09/01/2009, -0/+1I smoke pipes/cigars as well but there is always the concern of lip and throat cancer even if you don't inhale. I wonder if they can test for that.
It also matters how frequently you smoke. I light up 4-6 times a month, usually on weekends. Therefore I'm not all that worried about the effect on my health because cancer data for cigar smokers only tracks 3-cigars per day smokers at a minimum =) . - Jareth86, on 09/02/2009, -0/+1I liked the part where you waited almost five months before responding to a comment. Your job must keep you booked ***** solid.
