Move along. - oda1, on 10/12/2008, -0/+73The article neglects to report an important piece of information -- why this 13-year old kid got a heart-attack to begin with?
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -1/+5915 minute Respawn?
- ajamer, on 10/12/2008, -0/+57Medical student here. This guy didn't die. There are certain criteria that have to be met before declaration of death or brain death.
What happened was his heart rhythm changed (but maybe he still had electrical activity) and the docs ran through the advanced cardiac life support protocol (CPR is now called basic life support) which involves drugs like epiniphrine, and possibly defibrilliation with shock paddles. We tend not to give up at 10 minutes with kids. Old people maybe. - Zervaman, on 10/12/2008, -2/+59Inaccurate. Cardiac arrest does not equal death.
Complete and irreversible cessation of brain activity = death - WyldeJ, on 10/12/2008, -7/+55Target [James Doherty (Lvl13)] > Cast Resurrection [Rank 2] = No miracle.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2008, -9/+48You can't "die for 15 minutes". You either die or you you don't, death is a permanent condition. Then again you wouldn't expect anything better from a tabloid, my 8 year old niece is smarter and more to the point than them...
- IronPwnage, on 10/12/2008, -0/+25It's never Lupus.
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -2/+26it's probably lupus
- linagee, on 10/12/2008, -0/+22Would it help to wear a medical bracelet that offers a cash reward for not giving up on me on the operating table?

- Go37Pi, on 10/12/2008, -0/+19I work in a lab doing research in this area, and I think you'd be surprised as to how much medicine has advanced. The issue at hand is whether death is defined by a heart that stops beating. Now traditionally and legally, once the heart stops beating for a period of three or four minutes, a person is dead. However, research has shown that cell death does not occur when the heart stops bleeding (and hence the cells stop receiving blood, and hence oxygen). Rather, cell death occurs as a result of reperfusion injury. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reperfusion_injury. New research has shown that chilling the body and the cells when the heart has stopped reduces the oxidative stress that ensues when the cells start receiving blood again. It seems as if we already have an intuitive sense that death is an irreversible condition, so we shift the definition of death farther and farther away. I guess its just semantics, but I think its important that people understand the science behind the issue, or at least people at digg, because I feel it is a more educated and enlightened population.

- stoneage, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5"the two of them worked to bring James back to life."
After cardiac arrest there is virtually 0% survival rate after 10minutes, and even within those 10 minutes, you pretty much need a defribulator, as CPR will only help until you get one, but will not restart your heart. (Well, in actual fact a defrib stops the heart, causing it to restart it's correct pattern). - tackle, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5cue House intro music...

Why don't you experts send some answers to this economy problem, I am sure some of you think you have all the answers regarding that too, What a joke. People get their 15 seconds of fame by posting and seeming to know it all, LOL
somebody types "Medical student here" That person could be a garbage man, how could you know. I hope you are not believing any of this stuff on these comment lines, LOL - Go37Pi, on 10/12/2008, -1/+5So those who are on "life" support but lack brain activity are dead? Then why the moniker, "life support". And if so, why would we need the phrase brain dead to describe this state?
- birdly, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4They should have used the term "clinically dead".
