- Xondar, on 11/07/2007, -1/+24"Brain Drain" is already a well established term. It is when educated and sought after professionals leave one country en masse and emigrate to another country thus "draining" the first country of brains.
People might think this is what that article is about.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_drain - callmeslut, on 11/05/2007, -1/+20IMHO the best way is get decent sleep ! works like charm...
- starfisch, on 11/05/2007, -3/+12Get off digg? =]
- codmate, on 11/06/2007, -0/+911. Have a wank
- agilesloth, on 11/05/2007, -1/+7So I guess the author has no idea that something else is already called Brain drain and it has a totally different definition.
- musntSurfatWork, on 11/05/2007, -0/+5I have Brain Drain. I got married at 21, didn't finish school, worked in computers for a Jewish Boss, played CNC until EA dropped the *****, spent a lot of money on computer upgrades, started to get hooked on forums like Digg, oh wait, I have Soul Drain. . .
- kmeredith03, on 11/05/2007, -0/+5nothing fixes my brain drain like a few games of halo 3
- Tr33fiddy, on 11/05/2007, -1/+5Best way to beat brain drain: get the hell away from zombie infestations.
- Mothrog, on 11/06/2007, -0/+3I wish there was a way to bury ever retarded little lifehacker.com "story" automatically. Next up on lifehacker, if you're thirsty, have a drink of water!
- aywwts4, on 11/06/2007, -0/+3Yes, what the author is talking about is Burnout, which is the legitimate psychological ICD-10 term "Burn-out, State of vital exhaustion " http://www.who.int/classifications/apps/icd/icd10o ...
I was getting all ready for my witty one liner relating to the real definition of brain drain, sadly I can't use it.
Also to demonstrate complete consensus on the term, page one on google for brain drain and all the results google gives after 871 refer completely to xondar's definition, though it can refer to states or companies as well. (google wont let me look any deeper, but I'm sure the 1 million 900 thousandth result would be the same.) - Coestar, on 11/05/2007, -1/+4I thought this was going to be an article about the "Brain Drain" that successful businesses eventually suffer from, like Google recently did.
- fuzzynyanko, on 11/05/2007, -0/+3And when you come back, try to figure a way to make something sound cool on the 'net without using the word "hack".
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3I thought Brain Drain is when all the smart people leave a ***** country? Ten Tips on how to stop that would be more helpful.
- simpleid, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2i don't like any of the things they mentioned, they're not very convenient for the workplace especially. but i do agree with your comment.
i did two things, changed my hours from 9-6 (from 7-4), and i go to sleep by 11-12 every night. i'm far more alert, awake, and feel better every day since i made that switch.
i even have the energy to cook a good meal for dinner every night now, i feel like a new person with all this energy from the extra 2 hrs of sleep i can squeeze in every day. :-) - PyrotekNX, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2I thought there would be more D&D geeks on digg than this. Don't know why parent is being modded down.
- johnlandes, on 11/05/2007, -2/+4Get back to work, you lazy slug!
- mahdaeng, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2Good tips. The only problem is that most employers frown on the idea of their employees taking time out for naps, meditation, and movies.
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2In summary: Take a break and relax.
- dafragsta, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2Yerba Mate == cure for brain drain.
Awesome stuff. - ericsomething, on 11/05/2007, -2/+3Good stuff to know.
- tblasko, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1Agreed.
My 'brain drain' seems to be directly correlated to the amount of time I spend staring at a monitor. Especially if i go for long periods without looking away.
One of the things I've found that really helps is continuously drinking water. I seem to be less likely to get mentally exhausted if I drink water throughout my day. - kiiwii, on 11/05/2007, -1/+2I know I've been playing Guitar Hero too much when I saw this headline and thought "Death Drain" and thought this was a GH post...
- Billbapapa, on 11/07/2007, -1/+2They list "caffeine nap" among the ten ways, and it feels to me like the only thing on the list that isn't common sense. If you're suffering from an overworked mind, I think you're better off skipping this article and going straight to the article they link to about the nap (http://lifehacker.com/software/sleep/reboot-your-b ... Better yet, if your mind is overworked, just give it a ***** rest.
- dafragsta, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1"the fact that this looser doesn't know the word brain drain already exist proves that self help is for stupid people by stupid people"
Yeah, hippie "loosers!" - portos12, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Give more money.
http://www.bluedune.net/ - liquidjamm, on 11/05/2007, -1/+1so basically, to sum it up, they say stop thinking about the task at hand by doing something else. I think by your first year in college, you should be able to figure that one out without help of this article. unfortunately buried for stating the obvious.
- scamper22, on 11/06/2007, -1/+1Yeah, I've only been an engineer for a few years, but if there's one thing I've learned is that making the company money is not in the interest of business people. They would rather have 5 guys slaving away, than hold on to the experienced person and have them do the job properly.
Truth be told, most people who suffer burnout/stress...it is self created. You can always say no. The problem...some illusion of loyalty. If your crazy coworker wants to suffer and work long hours, then you don't look like a team player if you don't. We had one really experienced British guy (only 9 to 5er) leave the team, and my boss says 'He ruined my team'. Mind you, he was brilliant, and his experience/intuition is worth it even if he never stays 1 minute overtime. But that's business...more politics than money making. Keep the brilliant guy...and hire a junior guy to do the grunt work alongside him if you really want... Of course, our competitor is having a much more 9-to-5 policy and is actually taking people away from our company...duh...I won't mention any names :) Suffice to say, they're coming out with better products in a shorter time.
But...WE WORK HARDER :) but don't worry, i'm not complaining...I'm also leaving. They will learn soon enough. I'm still a young punk, but I'm not about to slave away because they made an experienced guys working conditions so terrible he had to leave. - crgh, on 11/05/2007, -6/+6Just stay away from (master) mind flayers, wear a greased helm or just genocide them.
- MJG2007, on 11/07/2007, -3/+312. Destroy any radios that are blaring Fox News, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Michael "Savage" Weiner, "Dr" Laura, Bill O'Reilly, or Glen Beck. These radio shows are well known for putting people into an unthinking zombie-like stupor and reduces the average IQ of the office.
- DncrLgz, on 11/05/2007, -1/+0seriously? i need a nap then.
- inactive, on 11/06/2007, -3/+212. Smoke weed
- scrimaxinc, on 11/05/2007, -3/+2como?
- xram12, on 11/05/2007, -2/+0the fact that this looser doesn't know the word brain drain already exist proves that self help is for stupid people by stupid people
- THE4IRON, on 11/05/2007, -2/+0The harder you work, the easier it is for the other guy to sluff off.
- triplescoop, on 11/06/2007, -9/+6adderall, energy drinks, and frequent cigarette breaks
