If people were getting smarter, the abortion rate would be dropping. - dooms13, on 10/11/2007, -12/+81If they were getting smarter they wouldn't be having sex or at least unprotected sex.
- smartmlp, on 10/11/2007, -11/+74Although its true that teens shouldn't be having babies, an abortion shouldn't be "the way out". They should be using their brains and not conceiving them in the first place. An abortion should always be a last resort after a well thought out decision and agreement from both people involved. The problem is when teens think that having unprotected sex is ok because they can just go get an abortion later on if something happens.
- JDoorjam, on 10/11/2007, -10/+63In Soviet Russia, abortion is performed on you!
No, seriously, they perform a lot of abortions there. - djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -5/+56"Teens shouldn't be having babies anyway. Perhaps people are getting smarter."
Whatever happened to birth control? I'd guess that taking a pill or using a condom hurts a hell of a lot less than an abortion. Cheaper, too. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+47What would you like to do?
[Abort] [Retry] [Cancel] - Kinneas12, on 10/11/2007, -2/+38I know its really sad and insulting to say, but some people are just plain STUPID. Stupid crap like, "oh I won't get pregnant" "condoms are for losers" "condoms reduce pleasure" "C'mon baby, I'll pull out" etc.
The problem is possibly not the lack of available contraception, but that you just have too many stupid people in your culture. I would like to see if there is any correlation (direct or indirect) between this and education rate. - vertinox, on 10/11/2007, -7/+39To be fair, there is an apparent correlation between the legalization of abortion and the drop in crime since the 70's.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legalized_abortion_and_crime_effect
And to play devil's advocate, if you prevent a mother from aborting her unwanted baby, and the child grows up in a abusive/broke home and then goes out and murders someone... You have basically indirectly murdered someone else anyways and canceled out the effect you wanted to acheive from outlawing abortion.
Yeah, it is a stretch, but it could happen. - dmegivern, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32England must be trying to get onto the top 20 list for per capita abortion. Stats are from nationmaster.com

- pilot3033, on 10/11/2007, -10/+36Proof that we need better sex education.
Clearly, enforcing abstinence and not teaching anything else is a problem (like we needed statistics to know that).
And yo, where the hell are the parents?
The more you know dammit! - NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -11/+36Why do people think this is such a bad thing... -_- You can't get rid of abortions, they will always be a necessary operation... If you want to lower the rates, teach proper birth control instead of abstinence in schools... and do your best to make birth control available for teens that... are just going to have sex anyway.
- vertinox, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25Hey did anyone notice this article is about the UK and not the USA?
I was about to say something but thought it would be too "US Centric" of me, but by everyone's comments it looks like they are thinking this is a study about the US. - Bahimiron, on 10/11/2007, -14/+35Gosh.
You mean abstinence only education isn't working?!
Maybe we're not teaching enough abstinence! - 4degrees, on 10/11/2007, -9/+29or if only their father pulled out sooner...
- infectaphibian, on 10/11/2007, -14/+34If only these teens parents had chose to have an abortion....
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -13/+31stop denigrating people who choose to get abortions. you don't know what circumstances they were in when they made that decision. in all likelihood they probably made the right choice. part of the reason why many choose not to get abortions when they really should have is because of the guilt our society puts on girls who do.
i once dated and am still close friends to a girl who was in such a situation, but was forced to carry out her pregnancy because both her parents were catholic. she was 16 at the time, was very active in school and earned good grades, but she had to drop out of school and work full-time to support her kid. worse yet, she's now stuck with the loser of a dad that got her pregnant for the rest of her life--this is a guy who once forced her to have sex when she didn't want to, and abused her physically on multiple occasions in addition to cheating on her.
the women/girls who make these decisions are the ones who have to live with it for the rest of their lives. so keep your self-righteous judgment to yourself. - Szandor, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23[Retry] is always more fun.
- stevenb, on 10/11/2007, -23/+40@sotopheavy
The majority of people who are pro-life, or anti-abortion have never had to make the decision. Being pro-choice... until making that choice.... is ***** hard.
Really ***** hard. - Kinneas12, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18Go read up on ratios and proportions. "per 1000"
- JDoorjam, on 10/11/2007, -7/+23burying comments is sweet, it lowers the dumb rate
- howdareyou, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18For all those who are Pro-Life; if you really cared about abortions wouldn't it be smart to get behind proper sex education and emergency contraception? Logical ways to lower abortion rates!
But unfortunately you don't care about being logical. - toxicshok, on 10/11/2007, -9/+24Yeah people seriously, Just do it in the butt
- wubblie, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18Not a stretch at all. Unwanted children are on average much more likely to commit crimes later in life. It has been pretty decisively demonstrated that abortion rates are inversely correlated with violent and property crimes. Across societies, and time frames, liberalization of abortion has always led to a decrease in violent and property crimes 15 years later, correcting for all other factors. Some people are not intelligent or responsible enough to plan things so that they do not have unprotected sex. Abortion is a godsend, because otherwise we would have a lot more people who are already at a genetic predisposition to act impulsively being raised in environments where they are not wanted and could not be raised effectively. Can you say perfect recipe for a mugger.
- alky, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17I think the saddest part of the article was this: "The figures also show that almost one third - 32 per cent - of women who had an abortion had already had at least one previous termination." That means someone who's had an abortion apparently has a good chance of having another one. *****, learn your lesson the first time.
- Arramol, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18"That isn't very Christian of you!"
It actually isn't. The Christian ideal according to the Bible would be to reach out to the ones involved and introduce change. Hoping for someone to go to Hell is actually very much against Christ's teachings. Unfortunately, what Christ teaches and what Christians practice tend to be very different.... - tecknoplasma, on 10/11/2007, -11/+24How do you fit a thousand babies into a phone booth? A blender!
Oh.. Bad time for a dead baby joke? - JDoorjam, on 10/11/2007, -7/+19Dig down... (comment aborted?)
- ruley, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17the people that burn abortion clinics?
the people that choose not to raise a child in an unfit home?
the people who aren't perfect?
or the people that wish to impose their own personal opinions on people? - lighty14, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14I don't think they remove tonsils anymore. Or at least it's very, very rare now.
- vertinox, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Condoms break
- sp89, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15they're called condoms people
- Arbus, on 10/20/2007, -1/+11The same people who are against abortion are against birth control and promote abstinence.
The world is a joke. - pyrotix, on 10/11/2007, -8/+18This is excellent news - crime should hit an all-time low in about 20 years.
Seriously, nothing makes crime go down like abortion. - JDoorjam, on 10/11/2007, -6/+15Seriously. Abstinence-only ed will never work because people will always be horny. Hell, teaching gay sex would probably be a more effective method of reducing teen pregnancy than abstinence-only education.
- thefaithful, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9No, the father shouldn't be allowed to impregnate and walk away.
They should at the very least be held equally financially responsible for the care of the child. - louiedog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10@emjaymj
A couple hundred dollars a month for birth control is cheaper than a baby for insurance companies. What does a doctor's visit and test cost if you even think you're pregnant? - NoSuchAgency, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11"If you don't want to be pregnant, don't *****."
You know some of us have heard of a magical technology that allows you to F*CK AND NOT GET PREGNANT! It's called "contraception" or "birth control" and comes in many forms but the condom is ~ the most idiot-proof.
If you want to live like an animal, a slave to your biological limitations, go ahead and abandon other useful technologies that have made our lives so much better. E.g. clothing and houses. It's about equal to willfully rejecting contraception. - vertinox, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14I suppose you should tell that to rape victims.
Secondly, you can't change people's behavior. They've been having sex for thousands of years and aborting people just as long.
People will have sex just for sex and you can't stop that. You can only mitigate their stupidity by allowing abortions, because otherwise you have to deal with a lot of unwanted kids who end up being a burden to society when their parents throw them to the way side. - 80hd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Unfortunately, evolution seems to favor those with short reproduction cycles when the burden of natural selection is lifted.
We live in a society where pretty much everybody is encouraged to live. Being weak, slow, etc does not inhibit ones ability to live as much as it did in the past. With a large number of individuals "making it" the gap between generations is shrinking and family sizes are increasing as well.
Exponential growth is our present reality. It's no wonder that women are choosing to end pregnancies in a world where fertility before maturity is on a growing prevalence and resources to support a family are increasingly diluted. - tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10"I'd rather be a bigot than a Christian."
Well, you've succeeded. Congratulations. - wonderboy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11@smackhero
I don't think anyone (except really religious people) have a problem with getting an abortion when the girl was raped.
Edit: And I hope I'm just misunderstanding this part of your comment, "she's now stuck with the loser of a dad that got her pregnant for the rest of her life'
Why would she stay with this guy? Or are you just saying she has to deal with the fact that the father of her child raped her? - tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10It's a sign of our declining moral fiber that [Abort] is always the default.
/tongue-in-cheek - deusdiabolus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7If putting a condom on actually made your penis harder and larger, the abortion rate would drop like a lead brick.
- blaaguuu, on 10/11/2007, -7/+14At least they tried...
- limpits, on 10/11/2007, -10/+17parents need to teach their daughters that blowjobs are much more practical
- oxdeltaxo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I have one word for everyone, Condoms! Bag you dick!
- ddxChrist, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7@vertinox
Yeah, but they typically don't break enough to warrant such an increase. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Meinwhile, every episode of CSI starts with a sex party. Thats helping things I'm sure...
