- EricOfTheJames, on 06/30/2009, -3/+30 Arguably, if the virus mutates and comes back stronger like other previous epidemics, these people will have a stronger defense against it than others. It's a gamble.
- Minters, on 06/30/2009, -5/+30People are still bothered about Swine Flu? Alright its killed a few people, but how many people have died from REGULAR flu this year?
- IphtashuFitz, on 06/30/2009, -0/+24But the regular flu isn't news. Swine Flu is! It's name alone screams "headlines"!!!!
/s - LordVance, on 06/30/2009, -0/+21Oh come on iceman - pedobear was a reply to a comment about exposing yourself to children... Did you really not see him creeping up after that comment?

- ozroy, on 06/30/2009, -2/+17It's summer (in the northern hemisphere) and all flus are generally more mild that time of year. When winter comes there is a possibility this flu will become more deadly.
That is what happened with the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. - IphtashuFitz, on 06/30/2009, -0/+13Most of those who died from swine flu had very weak immune systems that were compromised by other illnesses:
From http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30919716/ : "Health officials in Wisconsin, California, Illinois and Utah reported deaths from swine flu on Thursday and said all four patients had had other health problems."
From http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/11/health/23webflu. ... : Two additional deaths attributed to swine flu were reported over the weekend, with both victims suffering from other health conditions.
With a little effort I could go on and on. But the vast majority of H1N1 related deaths have involved people with other health related problems at this point. Furthermore, the CDC's website for H1N1 states "In the United States, most people who have become ill with the newly declared pandemic virus have recovered without requiring medical treatment". - unpluggedboy, on 06/30/2009, -0/+13Hmmm, according to one Ebonics translation site, proper African American Vernacular would be as follows:

- serif69, on 06/30/2009, -1/+11I think this is a great idea. It's like voluntary eugenics.
- iFrank, on 06/30/2009, -1/+10I swear, British people are so ***** weird. Every time there's an article about 6-year-olds getting pregnant or let's-get-diseases-together parties, it comes from a British newspaper.
Still love them, but they're weird as *****, eh? - lead2thehead, on 06/30/2009, -5/+14Does that mean my HIV party is a bad idea too?
- norle, on 06/30/2009, -0/+8Seriously, though, when I was a child in the 60s, parents used to send their kids to visit with other kids who had chicken pox, or measles so that you could get the childhood diseases when you were a child. They are much more serious when you get them as an adult. I've had measles, mumps, chicken pox, and German measles.
- xsecretfiles, on 06/30/2009, -1/+8I just heard party! Where at???
- AutoTom, on 06/30/2009, -10/+17MJ is secretly OK and using digg?
- andrewh7, on 06/30/2009, -1/+8We know that those who caught the Spanish Flu while it was in its milder form a hundred years ago were much less likely to die when it became deadly later. Keep making jokes.
- frieddonuts, on 06/30/2009, -2/+9Swine flu in its current form is effectively harmless. They still don't know why so many people died in Mexico and yet not in the rest of the world. What troubles them is the fact that it is a rapidly mutating strain with a huge variety of genetic material picked up in different species of animals. A cross-species strain, should it become highly virulent, would cause a devastating pandemic.
But you could just continue to see it as a conspiracy. /s - adent1066, on 06/30/2009, -1/+8I saw a NOVA special about the Spanish Flu once and they theorized that one of the reasons that older folks didn't die from the Spanish Flu was that when they were younger they were exposed to a similar flu virus that wasn't fatal. That exposure gave them greater immunity to the Spanish Flu virus. The younger able-bodied generation had no such protection, and suffered.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/30/2009, -2/+9Morons. It's a flu virus, not the chicken pox.
- IphtashuFitz, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6@andyb747: That CNN link is from months ago when the outbreak was first reported in Mexico, so it's mostly conjecture and not based on fact. The widespread impact of H1N1 wasn't known back then. More importantly, neither of the articles you mention backs up your claim that "Swine flu kills people with strong immune systems". There's a huge difference between "swine flu affecting people in their prime" and "swine flu killing people in their prime". I suggest you do a bit more research and make sure that you can back up your claims. Neither of those articles state whether or not any deaths are attributed to either strong or weak immune systems so they're entirely inconclusive for the purpose of your claim.
As the pandemic has progressed the WHO, CDC, etc. has seen a trend that the vast majority of those who come down with the flu are younger. People who are 50 and older seem to have a natural immunity to it, so the vast majority of reported cases are in younger people. But younger people also doesn't mean stronger immune systems. It's still people with weakened immune systems who are dying from H1N1 in far greater numbers. Here's the guidance from the CDC for doctors:
"CDC has issued interim guidance for clinicians on identifying and caring for patients with novel H1N1, in addition to providing interim guidance on the use of antiviral drugs. Influenza antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaled powder) with activity against influenza viruses, including novel influenza H1N1 viruses. The priority use for influenza antiviral drugs during this outbreak is to treat people hospitalized with influenza illness, and to treat people at increased risk of severe illness, including pregnant women, young children, and people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes and other metabolic diseases, heart or lung disease, kidney disease, weakened immune systems, and persons with neurologic or neuromuscular disease."
Note that it says that priority should be given to those with various diseases and other medical conditions? It's because it's the combination of those pre-existing conditions AND H1N1 that's making it deadly.
From http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124502116646013713 ... : "Flu experts say the virus appears to be having the worst impact on people with other health problems, including diabetes and asthma. More than 70% of hospitalizations in the U.S. have been people with such conditions, according to the CDC. Pregnant women and people who are overweight also appear to be more vulnerable."
From http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/28/health/policy/28 ... : "About 50 percent of swine flu hospitalizations globally and about 70 percent of those in the United States seem to involve underlying conditions. Besides Dr. Frieden’s list, they include anything that makes it difficult for patients to clear their lungs, which can include some severe mental problems, seizure disorders or neuromuscular disease. They include chronic heart, liver and kidney disease; suppressed immunity, whether caused by H.I.V. or drugs taken by cancer or transplant patients; and blood diseases like sickle-cell anemia, which lowers the blood’s ability to carry oxygen."
From http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/sick.htm : "People at higher risk of serious complications from seasonal flu include people age 65 years and older, children younger than 5 years old, pregnant women, people of any age with chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), and people who are immunosuppressed (e.g., taking immunosuppressive medications, infected with HIV)."
Just do a quick search on Google for "swine flu deaths" or "h1n1 deaths" and you'll see lots of news reports of deaths and the vast majority of them mention that the people were sick or had otherwise suppressed immune systems. You hardly see any where they indicate the victim was healthy. - ammundsen, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6Indeed it seems as if the very words of those commenting on the swine flu would suggest this is not a dumb idea. If the virus could get worse how is this any different than the vaccine they will no doubt have this fall?
The good news for us is a more deadly flu might have more trouble spreading. If a flu incapacitates and kills its victim too quickly they will not have time to pass the virus on. Think of how easy it is to get a cold compared to the normal seasonal flu thanks to thoughtless folks who can go to work and otherwise engage socially because of the relative mildness of symptoms. - powatom, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6It's actually a great idea, do it.
- etx313, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6Seems perfectly reasonable to me.
- anexanhume, on 06/30/2009, -3/+8Orgies?
- richmomz, on 06/30/2009, -2/+7I've heard of people intentionally exposing their kids to Chicken Pox (which is much worse if you get it when you're older) and it *does* work. If Swine Flu is only potentially lethal to people between age 20-45 like they say, and assuming it's safe for kids with a normal immune system (so far there have been very few deaths, much less than the regular old flu), then it's probably not a bad idea actually.
- rayraywpg, on 06/30/2009, -1/+6.... so none of you actually read the article I guess.
They admit that (a) the flu is currently quite mild (i.e. relatively harmless) (b) it may mutate into something more potent (c) getting this mild form should prevent you from catching any more dangerous mutations later.
So from strictly selfish point of view, it is advantageous for a person to get it now instead of waiting. - Misterberu, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4/You're illiterate

I wasn't scared of the bird flu, and i'm not scared of the pig flu, and when the next superbug is announced? i won't be scared of that either. - Animan351, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4The article says it works and someone finally admitted it's a fairly mild flu. They even said it should make you immune if it does evolve into a more deadly version later on, so it's not that bad an idea. I know people used to expose their kids to chicken pocks all the time when they were young and it's about harmless, rather than when they're older and it can be severe.

- richmomz, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4I think Spanish Flu also spared most children as well - the theory was that since most flu related deaths were due to an overzealous immune system response that resulted in pneumonia, people with weakened immune systems (kids and old people) were actually more likely to survive. Swine flu appears to be similar in that it triggers the same type of immune system response, thus putting people aged 20-45 at greatest risk.
