- billislord, on 06/29/2009, -2/+57Why exactly is this surprising? When I has in high school I constantly had adults telling me that these were the best years of my life and I better not waste them. I even had one blow up on me when I told her I wasn't going to buy a class ring. Well I couldn't attend the ring ceremony and it was supposed to be this big deal. Well guess what, it wasn't. A year later people forgot all about the ceremony, a year after that people forgot that they even spent 200-300 dollars on a now worthless ring.
The only people who say that high school and college were the best years of their lives is because they didn't work hard during either time and now their life sucks because they didn't actually get anything out of it. Now they work at some ***** job with low pay and think back to those years when they didn't have any financial concerns and were probably way healthier than they are now. I liked college a lot, but I liked being out of school and on my own much more. Then again, I worked hard and made something of myself. - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -5/+50Nearly 15% are emo?

"I know i'm not gonna live to see 25."
gaytards - dealdigger, on 06/29/2009, -1/+20Let me give you the perspective of a happy 30-something ... I love my wife, my two beautiful daughters, and yes, even my job, but the older you get, the more you know about the world and what it has to offer. When you are in High School and College (or just younger in general) there is more to explore and learn. Relationships are unknown and you have the opportunity to explore so many different sides of yourself and other people.
As you grow older, you find that most of the "new" people you meet remind you of someone else from your past. While, this isn't a bad thing per se, it can make you look back on your younger years with envy.
I'm an optimistic person, and I will enjoy every last minute of my life, but take a hint from a 30 year old codger and try to savor every new experience. While you will have them throughout your life, there are so many more to be had right now. - EntropyFan, on 06/29/2009, -1/+19Not really. Most who I know that say that worked hard and are now reasonably successful, with decent jobs, kids, houses and the like.
The main reason is nostalgia, where by you selectively remember and enhance the good parts of a time period, while selectively forgetting or diminishing the bad parts.
They have created a late teens to mid 20's that never existed.
There is a very old saying; the older I get, the better I was.
Reality, even a good job and decent life can't compete with fantasy. - mattyvan, on 06/29/2009, -2/+20only the good die young
- morningmatters, on 06/29/2009, -1/+17"Native Americans, blacks and low-income teens — kids who are disproportionately exposed to violence and hardship — were much more likely than whites to believe they'd die young."
In case people are wondering if emos make up the majority of the sucidal teens. IMO emos only want to sound suicidal in order to grab attention and don't really want to die. - ripple123, on 06/29/2009, -3/+19suicide. if you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself.
- azikrogar, on 06/29/2009, -1/+16I've had a handful of students express similar feelings. Typically they are low-income and have a very hard family life. What's the point in living when the only way you know how is through what your parents are doing. Young kids and teenagers are very susceptible to their home life and it's not a shock when so many of them are coming from broken homes with no dreams or aspirations. It breaks my heart seeing these kids everyday.
- Epik, on 06/29/2009, -1/+14I agree completely. "Man, college is the best years of your life".
That's really sad man. If all you did was party and get a useless degree, maybe. But holy ***** nowadays people are "college young" through their forties.
You've just got to be smart, plan your finances, and give yourself the time and capacity to be young and relax and have fun the same way you did "when you were in college". - MrBogard, on 06/29/2009, -0/+12I don't find this very surprising at all, but that's probably because I've been there and I've known a ton of people with this same mindset.
- shrikedoa, on 06/29/2009, -0/+11Sadly, most of them will be wrong.
- imikedaman, on 06/29/2009, -1/+12Are they sure they don't think they're going to die young BECAUSE they engage in risky behaviors?
- walshgopher, on 06/29/2009, -1/+12emos don't actually think they're going to die. They just have a mad case of puberty-blues and want someone to pay attention to them.
- FakeHipster, on 06/29/2009, -0/+10CAPS COMPLEX. I HAD IT WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. CAUSED BY SNARKY COMMENTING IN DIGG TO GET YOU CONSTANTLY FEELING LIKE YOU NEED TO BE HEARD.
- Solkre, on 06/29/2009, -1/+11Actually, this last week has shown us all that you can die at any moment, even when the world thinks you have years left.
- Caergrim, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9I absolutely despised high school and college. I would label the years I spent within those institutions as my worst Now that I am free to do as I please, I feel great and I am looking forward to the rest of my life. And you better believe that I want to live until the end of time.
- Jupichan, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8Aw, they're burying me already! I'm not dead yet!
- Jupichan, on 06/29/2009, -1/+9Strange/funny thing is, I've been convinced for quite some time (since I was about eight years old or so - now I'm 22) that I'm not going to live past the age of 25.
Now this tumor in my head REALLY convinces me. :P
It bothers me pretty often, but I've been trying not to let it get the best of me. :3 - Stinger007, on 06/29/2009, -1/+7I think the TV News might have something to do with this, constantly playing and replaying reports sensationalizing ways in which we are going to die / get sick etc. While some are legitimate things to fear, most aren't.
- Brahstradamus, on 06/29/2009, -2/+8gotta love how they tie in drugs for absolutely no reason.
- RyomaNagare, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5And for that matter make "Sarcasm Detection" a curricular Activity in all schools.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+5buzz kill
- headzoo, on 06/29/2009, -1/+6You sound a bit jaded to me, and possibly you're not as happy with the decisions you've made as you think. While it is true that you need to work hard when you're young, it's just as important to find to time have fun. Too much of one or the other doesn't lead to long term happiness.
You could end up being 80 years old, and not having very many fond memories to reflect on, because you spend your entire life working hard, and never learned to have fun and relax.
You need to find a balance between fun and work for true happiness.
"Fair goes the dancing when the Sitar is tuned,
Tune us the Sitar neither low nor high,
And we will dance away the hearts of men.
The string overstretched breaks, the music dies,
The string overslack is dumb and the music dies,
Tune us the Sitar neither low nor high."
- Buddha - tito13kfm, on 06/29/2009, -5/+10At 16 I was convinced I wouldn't live to be 21. At 21 I was convinced my life was over and I'd be dead by 25. At 25 I knew I wouldn't make it to 30. At 30, I wish my life was over. Getting old is depressing.
- bugwayji, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5 Looking at the comments, I never realized there were so many, Sociologists, Psychologists, and Anthropologists on Digg. Otherwise they would just be rants of crazies.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4Dugg for puberty blues
- sodade, on 06/29/2009, -1/+4Gee, maybe a lot of people look at the parameters of a "normal" life in American society and it makes them so violently ill that they can't imagine having to conform to it. That's why I had a strong urge to cozy up with a shotgun when I was 18. Lucky for me I didn't because I ended up with a pretty good life that is tolerably deviant from the norm. Too bad it was so hard for me to see that future because I ended up wasting a lot of time being a depressed dumbass.
- Zaeboes, on 06/29/2009, -2/+5My theory is that we're one of the first generations to see our great-grandparents before they died. Old is ***** scary.
- ipushmycar, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3I'm 21 and I believe I'll die in my early 30's. Simply because this world is heading to the ***** and it's only a matter of time before some crazy dictator drops a bomb on my head. Hooray for living in the most hated nation in the world.
- STARTSOMETHING, on 06/29/2009, -2/+515% of all teens want attention.
- Halsfield, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Better to burn out than fade away
- Navicerts, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3I dunno, i did "ok" in HS and college and have a good job now... If i could re-live any days over again it would be HS, but im perfectly happy with my life right now as well.
- lofispy, on 06/29/2009, -3/+6I think this is a good example of science's tendency to lose sight of the forest while looking at the trees, and more specifically how the people that choose to become scientist (geeks and nerds) are largely ignorant of the mindsets and thinking of other, less cerebral groups of people. I mean, I didn't know anybody as a teenage who thought they would live past 30, and not because we were depressed, or had no hope, or any of the negative things brought up here, but simply because we felt like any life worth living was one that would likely see you dead early on...you know, fast cars, lots of drugs, lots of *****, loud music, never sleeping, ***** food, etc. None of us WANTED to die, it's just that we all enjoyed life on the edge.
- UnFriendlyFire, on 06/29/2009, -3/+5I rather laugh with the sinners, than cry with the saints; the sinners are much more fun.
- lex0429, on 06/29/2009, -4/+6your ***** comment is depressing. go get drunk or something
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -1/+3well with all the fast food teenagers eat I can see why they would think this
- headzoo, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2When I was a wee lad, I didn't think I was going to die young, but I wanted to. I had the "hope I die before I get old" mindset. Now that I'm 33, I see just how dumb that attitude was, since these are some great years, and I'm only looking forward to my 40's.
- ripple123, on 06/29/2009, -3/+5its good to see your knowledge of kids comes exclusively from wacky video clips on the internet.
- Zaxcomp, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Had a similar situation prior to finding out my heart is failing and then suffering my first heart attack.
- RyomaNagare, on 06/29/2009, -3/+5OK seriously people this is important, I believe its all because of the music of today, parents should encourage their children to listen good music with nice values. if they are listening to evil songs that encourage cutting and self deprecation they will turn up ***** up.
I say we put all of today kids in a strict musical diet, nothing but Iron Maiden, Dio, Judas Priest and MötorHead, Try to be depressed after listening to Die with your boots on.
or for that matter stand up and shout. - walshgopher, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Lung cancer is ***** scary
- keysersozejr, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1This mostly relates to the risky behaviors of your younger days. It was a lot more likely that you would drink too much, overdose, crash a car, wreck a motorcycle, ski out of bounds, go down a class 4 rapids, jumping out of an airplane, bungee jumping and on and on until something bad happened.
I specifically remember after graduating high school most of us were shocked that no one in our group of friends had died, seems pretty morbid now though. I know from 15 to 25 I could have easily bought it a dozen times and I would say that is pretty common. - joot2112, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1I don't know where you live, but to me it seems the tide of overpopulation is definitely not being stemmed. This mound is ***** crawling with humans... like ants. Worse than ants... like ants with cell phones.
- smokewater, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1"seven times more likely than optimistic kids to be subsequently diagnosed with AIDS" no *****, that's probably because they were diagnosed with HIV
- DulcetTone, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Most will be sorely disappointed.
- walshgopher, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2well aren't you just a negitive nelly.
- dancantone, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1I see death around the corner!
