- steger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36so basically if you are lazy and eat/drink a lot of calories, you gain weight? Wow. I never thought of it like that.
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30file this under "no *****"
- spahn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Digg needs an [Obvious] tag.
- Splizxer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25This just in, smoking causes cancer!
- ho0ber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Quit soda. Drink BEEF.
- poshsuicide, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Such insight!
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I wish my girlfriend would do this....
Oh who am I kidding...I don't have a girlfriend, I'm on digg! - bexy4506, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19So people needed someone to tell them that high calorie, sugar loaded drinks make you gain weight? They didn't already know this? Jeeze.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I only Drink Liquid Bleach. If it burns, it's working!
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15@thetanbark
Right, because aspartame is _so_ much better for you. - Axios, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14The sad part is, the answer to your question is probably 'yes.' There are a ton of foolish people who don't think about what they're doing to themselves, then when they see a "report" on how bad something is for people, they say 'wait a second... I do that!'
*shrugs* - TruthElixirX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I quit drinking AS much soda this past year and have dropped an enormous amount of weight. In December I weighed 188ish and I now weigh 147ish. I wish more people would do this.
- radial, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12congrats
- Scruffydan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I am shocked! Pop bad for me?
Who would have thought that the good people of coca-cola were trying to kill me - Th3_anOmoLy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Note to self:
1) Gain title of "Researcher"
2) Spend lots of money on "New Study"
3) State the obvious in a press release/article
4) Get paid - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@bexy - I hate to tell you this, but that hot Night Elf chick who digs Diggers is actually a balding 180 lb. male chain-smoker.
- lil_isie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@betterth
To correct you: YOU can eat fast food and drink soda, and as long as YOU work out, YOU won't gain weight.
I eat healthier than most people that I know, and very little meat or soda ontop of this. What meat I do eat is lean and healthy. I exercise everyday, and you know what? I am still overweight.
I am otherwise as healthy as a horse, excellent blood pressure, cholserterol, and no diabetes, but I still weigh a lot.
If this were true. I would be skinny. Different people have different metabolisms. People can digest foods better and stronger than others. For example, I don't have a good metabolism.
So to gereralize like that isn't a good thing for you to do pal. - trampish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hence the invention of diet soda...
- danep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8In other news, drinking water has been found to help prevent dehydration.
...riiiight. - spahn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Ric Romero reports: "High fructose corn syrup can make you fat. More at 11."
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well, HFCS may not be sugar, but it's definitely sugar.
- kyledavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes, so I can tag your comment with it. :-)
- radial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5drinking water instead of soda can also make you lose tons of weight, er pounds at least
- neomits, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7ummmm, duh?
- cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Carbonated beverages are still harmful to your teeth and bones, not to mention diet sodas can still contain caffeine.
- snypa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's all that god damned high fructose corn syrup.
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I drink a lot of soda, maybe the equivalent to 5 - 7 cans a day. I've stayed in what I consider my target weight for my height and build all my life.
I think this article is off base: "This just in: Eating or drinking an excess of anything without working out will cause weight gain"
You can eat fast food and drink soda, and as long as you work out, you won't gain weight. - TruthElixirX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thanks for the congrats. ^_^.
- spahn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7isn't caffeine the point?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Sugary drinks are piling on pounds, new report says"
Thanks, Captain Obvious. I've lived on sugary, syrupy soft drinks all my life. Now I'm diabetic and once hit 305 pounds.
My children have _never_ had anything to drink with sugar or caffeine in it. I'm not letting to soft drink industry take the lives of MY kids! They're thin, athletic and HEALTHY. - jmdajr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I quit soda long ago.
Absolutely worthless... - CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ spahn
I fark in your general direction! - CosmicBratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, but I'd like to be the researcher that's paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to come to that conclusion.
- ohnnyj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Or Coke Zero. I love the stuff.
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i wish i could find a link but china did a study where they discovered a DIRECT link between introduction of soda into the nation and esophageal cancer. it was easy for them to trace because theyre pretty much a monoculture and they know exactly when it was widely introduced.
- ccrook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4HFCS also has that nasty attribute that when consuming it versus regular sugar, it doesn't make you feel as full.
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/health/2002658491_healthsyrup04.html - thetanbark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Don't forget things like Gatorade and Powerade which can have as much as 25% of your daily sugar intake in 1 32oz bottle. If you want a soda, try and opt for at least a Diet Soda, if not Diet Caffeine Free.
- rxbandit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@LoudOrangeCat: You should be applauded for making sure your kids are healthy and athletic. My life might have been completely different if my parents had regulated my diet, at least in the early years when I was just forming eating habits that would follow me for years.
Once I got older I realized how I was KILLING myself by eating like ***** and drinking AT LEAST 1000+ calories of soda a day. I changed, ditched everything unhealthy from my diet, and started working out every single day. - EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5When is the last time you could buy soda in the US that actually used sugar? All of it seems to be sweetened with HFCS these days.
- jimmsta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't mean to sound trollish, but the only thing I'm thinking is "Well, duh!"
c'mon, everyone knows that sugar causes people to gain weight if they don't burn it off. - CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3our society here in the US is streamlined for the least amount of exercise possible.
- stevesearer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I probably shouldnt have had all of these today...
http://picasaweb.google.com/SteveSearer/EnergyDrinks - LordLucless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, you probably have a better metabolism in some respects. High metabolisms are wasteful, they burn more energy than is needed. A low metabolism will get more energy by burning fewer calories. A low metabolism is a problem in environments where there is plenty of food (most of the Western world), but if you were in an environment where food is scarce, you'd be able to survive longer than your high-metabolic buddies.
The thing that everyone overlooks with this weight thing is that weight is just a heuristic, a rule of thumb. Someone who is overweight is more likely to have heart problems. But that's not *because* they're overweight, it's because people who are overweight are *more likely* to not exercise, eat lots of high-energy (sugar, fat) foods, etc.
You can be what is currently classified as "overweight" (they change the boundaries constantly) and still be at less risk of heart disease than a person of average weight, simply because you eat healthy and your body processes it efficiently, whereas the average weight person eats a lot of saturated fats and their body burns the calories off quicker - their metabolism won't necessarily help their cholesterol levels though. - yoshitx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Quit Soda, Drink Beer.
- phenolholic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3my mom accidentially bought coke zero the other day. i got mad at her, but now i'm going to thank her. 0 calories, 0 carbs, 100% artifical sweeteners.
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think part of the real problem here is the general public's (i.e. not diggers) view on the causes of weight gain. To an awful lot of people fat=weight, and that's it. Fat makes you fat, and sugar makes you hyper. It's a shame, but a lot of people will look at the side of the can of Coke and see 0g fat...won't make me fat!
- soulfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why don't you ask for water when you are going out to eat?
- megaloid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry, I accidentally dugg you down. You're more right than the average person realizes. That's because the "no *****" mechanism of the average person has atrophied to the point where realizations such as, "Oh man, if I sit in this toll booth all day and eat Chicken McNuggets at the rate I was accustomed to in my childhood, I will turn into a fatass," do not occur. And as witnessed in "Super Size Me," and countless print articles, it doesn't even register with a lot of fat people that their condition is a disadvantage to themselves on many levels. They're like, "*****, these sweatpants don't fit anymore. Let's go to Wal-Mart."
- HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't really drink soda anymore.. I used to be addicted to Lilt(i love pineapple!), but now I only drink pure pineapple juice and pure lychee juice :) i suppose it's healther, tastes better and doesn't tingle my nose :S
- soulfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was like that in high school. My metabolism did slow down when I turned 19 and went from 155 to 180. I lost the weight though when I started running every day and cut out soda and went back to 155.
