- jggube, on 03/29/2009, -2/+35That's the exact same reason I don't ever work out, because of deadly heart risks. So I do the opposite: I sit in front of the TV/computer all day. Personally, I think that's much better.
- Ninh, on 03/29/2009, -0/+19Straight from No ***** Magazine, right?
- inactive, on 03/29/2009, -3/+20Good thing I had no plans of ever competing in one.

- jaypooner, on 03/29/2009, -0/+11thats why pussies dont do these
- SwiftKick34, on 03/29/2009, -0/+8In other news, cardiovascular stress may lead to heart attack.
- Wrangler76, on 03/29/2009, -0/+7This is exactly why I hate these kinds of studies, and the alarmist authors that try to make them seem important.
"Statistics show that for every million participants in these 26.2-mile running races, there will be four to eight deaths.
The rate for triathletes is far higher - 15 out of a million, the new study shows. Almost all occurred during the swim portion, usually the first event.
Of the 14 deaths identified, 13 occurred during swimming; the other was a bike crash. Autopsies on six of the victims showed that four had underlying heart problems. Two others had normal-looking hearts, but they may have suffered a fatal heart rhythm problem, Harris said. "
Oh no! Somebody ban triathlons now. - HenvY, on 03/29/2009, -1/+8Seems like what this article is saying is that unfit people attempting to jump straight into incredibly strenuous exercise often have heart attacks. Here's what might help: PROPER TRAINING.
- rahsut, on 03/29/2009, -0/+6in other news, there is a 10 in a million chance you will die from crossing the street. stay on your block people, never leave it!
- wilf_brim, on 03/29/2009, -0/+6Not particularly surprising. Swimming in open water is more dangerous than in a pool. Swimming in open water, at the start of a triathalon, with several hundred (to thousand) others that may or may not know what they are doing, is even more dangerous.
If you have any kind of trouble at the start of a swim, in a huge crowd, you are in a tough spot. When you are running you just collapse and (hopefully) nobody runs over you and somebody comes to help. In water there is a good chance you will drown first. - HenvY, on 03/29/2009, -0/+5Swimming: A deadly heart attack risk!
Wait, so the one in the bike crash died of a heart attack? - dalittle, on 03/29/2009, -0/+5Would love to see some statistics of people who do triathlons vs those that are 100 lbs overweight. This is fear mongering and is the worst kind warning people to not do something that would actually help live longer and be healthier.
- iancgi, on 03/29/2009, -0/+4Uhh that is counter productive to human nature. We should all push ourselves but also know our limits.
- umdigger, on 03/29/2009, -1/+5I can believe it. Did an Xterra last summer and it was by far the hardest thing I've ever done. That's obviously why I signed up again...
- kavery, on 03/29/2009, -0/+4*cracks open his fifth Budweiser on the day, continues watching Louisville/Michigan St.*
- billhanifin, on 03/29/2009, -0/+4This is obviously a disinformation plot hatched by the inventors of chicken wings! The guy is probably hiding out in Buffalo laughing as athletes retire to the Anchor Bar for another round of 20 wings and a few brewskies.
- ATH025, on 03/29/2009, -0/+3Pushing yourself too hard can cause issues with your heart? What color is the sky again?
- SpeedyG, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2That "twice the risk of death" is the difference between correctly calling a coin flip 16 times in a row and correctly calling a coin flip 17 times in a row.
Fourteen deaths in nearly a million triathletes, and they have the nerve to throw around phrases like "twice as likely". Buried. - directedition, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2Currently about 034,110,232

- directedition, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2Wow! Triathlons are so dangerous!
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm about to head out on a road trip. - directedition, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2My tactic is to sit in the couch and eat pizza while watching MTV. I figure if I can get my blood pressure high enough, I can slow down my heart rate. The fewer beats there are, the less likely I'll hit a bad one. /s
- IronTriathlete, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2You should. They're incredible.

- troyallen069, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1What's with all the studies? Everything causes cancer or heart disease.
- directedition, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1Warning: Healthy things are bad for you!
- jfsimard79, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1I thought about it once, then I remembered that the most I've ever ran is 4 kilometers (2.5 miles). Note to Self: Good luck with that.
- clark24, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Studies show: Being a triathlete will kill you, running will kill you, not exercising will kill you, eating will kill you, not eating will kill you, sugar will give you diabetes, fake sugar will give you cancer... you're pretty much screwed no matter what. So if you enjoy doing triathlons, you might as well stick with it. Better to die in a triathlon than to need a forklift to carry your 500 lb. Cheeto-stained corpse out of the house.
- SpectreFire, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1BREAKING NEWS: Living presents extreme risks of death!

- nbcaffeine, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1I'm not normally one to split hairs, but it was a woman who invented the treats we now enjoy. Or, so the legend goes
- IronTriathlete, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1Hell no, I push myself to the limit all of the time. I train 20-30 hours per week on top of school for triathlons. I'm competing in 2 half Ironman (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run) within 4 weeks of each other in a May. I want to see how far I can go. I'm still a teenager and hope I can become a pro/semi-pro triathlete.
- 64705, on 10/18/2009, -0/+1I see you already have a subscription, Mr. Johnson.

- inactive, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1haha, I usually do sprints, i just recently started olympic distance ones... every time when the run starts i ask my self why do i put myself in so much pain! my legs are like jello for at least the first 0.5 miles.
- t0x2c, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1Dugg for decimal (the only people that use hex are the numbnut CSS designers, and not even consistently. Whenever I'm modifying a template some client gave me I come across the same color for two different classes, but one's in hex and one's in rbg() decimal. WTF)
- mazdamx, on 03/29/2009, -0/+0Stop whining.
- agfresh8, on 03/30/2009, -0/+0I don't even know where to begin in ripping on this article.
1. Is it trying to make people fatter by scaring them out of exercising?
2. I've done a few short distance triathlons, and most of the people are runners, who started biking, and then took up swimming just to be able to do triathlons. So swimming is most people's weakest disciplines, which could explain a higher incident rate.
3. This study/article seems biased from the start. I had to laugh when I read... "Anyone that jumps into freezing cold water knows the stress on the heart"... who the hell does that? USAT events allow wetsuits up to 84 degrees Fahrenheit. - tyne101101, on 03/29/2009, -2/+2Does this heart-related deaths linked to weather changes such as humidity and unbalanced temperature ranges? Because if it is, I don't seem to attempt fate for all elements of weather yet.
- deadironykate, on 03/29/2009, -3/+3Don't push yourself too far, people.
