Scare-tactics work much better than hiding your head in the sand!! I won't say that it was 100% effective, but I can only recall seeing two or three pregnant girls over the course of my whole HS career - this is in a school of around 1200. Adolescents will be adolescents - and imo it's just criminal not to give them as much informational ammo as possible to protect themselves.

It's like telling kids that people have died in car crashes so they should never drive, and at the same time not telling them about seatbelts. In the end, even if some kids don't ever drive (more out of fear than anything else), there will be those (the majority) that won't care what anyone else says and drive anyways, with little to no knowledge or use of seatbelts.

This bizarre practice of a daughter pledging to their father and church to not have sex does not work to reduce sexual activity; in fact, it is counter productive because these girls are less likely to use birth control.

Young adults who choose abstinence are, in my opinion, making a wise choice. (And I'm leaving religion out of it.) Refusing to educate children about the very real dangers of sex in the face of evidence that abstinence-only education at best does not work, and at worst causes harm is quite radical, verging on idiotic.
Any sex-education program must, of course, advise that abstinence is the only 100% method of protection. Why must this be included? Because it is the truth. But, like all other forms of protection, abstinence only works if you use it. Therefor, it is important to advise teenagers of other options.

So teaching abstinence over sexual education tends not too work.
